(Note: *Qian Jin Yao Fang* does not contain Gan Cao).
Method for Preparing Cooked Dry Di Huang
Separately harvest Di Huang, remove rootlets, leaves, and fine twigs. Crush to extract juice. Use this juice to soak fat Di Huang roots. Place them in a steamer (Zeng), lining the bottom with soil or rice to prevent sticking. Cover and steam for one Shi Chen (two hours). Remove and sun-dry thoroughly. Return to the juice and steam again. Steam for another Shi Chen, remove, and sun-dry until the juice is exhausted, then dry completely. Alternatively, slice Di Huang directly and steam for half a day, turning frequently.
Method for Planting Di Huang (Including Preparation)
First select good, fat, reddish, soft Di Huang as seed stock. Choose good land and plow deeply. Plowing frozen land in the twelfth lunar month is even better. Cut the roots of fertile large Di Huang into pieces about three to four Fen to one or two Cun long. One Hu (unit of volume) can plant one Mu (unit of area). Plant in the second or third lunar months. Make ridges with one Chi spacing between plants. After growth, hoe, hill soil, and weed repeatedly. By the ninth or tenth lunar month, when leaves appear small and withered, dig them up. One Mu yields approximately twenty Hu. Select large roots and wash clean with water. Wash fine roots and trimmed ends as well. Sun-dry until extremely dry. Cut into pieces slightly longer than one Cun. Cover with Bai Mao (Imperata Rhizome) and steam under a Zeng (steamer), covering tightly. Alternatively, fill bags with soil and place around them. From dawn to dusk, steam what remains the next day. The previously crushed fine parts are extracted for juice and boiled in a copper vessel until thick like thin malt syrup. Submerge Di Huang in this juice until saturated, remove, and sun-dry. Repeat until the juice is exhausted. Generally, one hundred Jin of raw material yields thirty Jin of product. Harvest in the eighth, ninth, or tenth days of the month. Ensure roots are not too old; forcing steam on old roots makes them indigestible and retains fibrous veins. When initially placing Di Huang in the steamer, place a copper vessel underneath to catch the liquid. Sprinkle good wine over the Di Huang to moisten it evenly. Collect the resulting liquid and mix it with the boiling juice for best results.
