Nao Yong (Brain Abscess) occurs in the Niwan Palace, located on the top of the head. If the color is purple like a grape, with multiple sores, some resembling broken millet grains, and the surrounding area hard, while the top of the sore is red but not black, this is classified as Yang Nao Yong (Yang-type Brain Abscess), which is still treatable. If the color is purple, dark, and lusterless, accompanied by mental confusion and loss of consciousness, this is classified as Yin Zheng (Yin Syndrome). The mortality rate is extremely high; ten out of ten or one hundred out of one hundred may die. Treatment must begin with decoction of Huo Ji (Fire Agent) within five days before onset; otherwise, survival is uncertain.
Prescription:
Jinyinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos) 8 liang, Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix) 3 liang, Huangqi (Astragali Radix) 4 liang, Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix) 3 liang, Renshen (Ginseng Radix) 2 liang.
First, use ten large bowls of water to decoct Jinyinhua into a soup. Then add the remaining herbs and decoct until two bowls remain. Take twice daily for four consecutive days, during which the abscess will gradually heal. Subsequently, switch to Shiquan Dabu Tang (Decoction for Perfect Tonicity) at a dose of four liang, followed by Sibai Dihuang Wan (Eight-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) decocted, allowing the patient to drink freely to achieve full recovery. This is a treatment method for critical cases with only one chance of survival out of nine.
Additionally, before the abscess ulcerates and deteriorates, the following prescription can be used:
Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) 1 liang, Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix) 2 liang, Jinyinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos) 2 liang, Shanzhuyu (Corni Fructus) 1 liang, Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix) 1 liang, Beimu (Fritillariae Thunbergii Bulbus) 3 qian, Manjingzi (Vittaginis Fructus) 2 qian.
Decoct in three large bowls of water and take orally. It will resolve immediately, with recovery expected in no more than two doses.
Naohou Yong (Posterior Neck Abscess) arises in the Yuzhen region. It also presents as either Yin or Yang syndrome. Although less severe than Nao Yong, improper medical treatment can lead to rotting and decapitation, hence the name Luotou Ju (Head-Dropping Carbuncle). For Yang syndrome, characterized by high, protruding, red, and swollen lesions, the following prescription is applicable:
Jinyinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos) 2 liang, Pugongying (Taraxaci Herba) 1 liang, Sheng Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata) 3 qian.
Decoct in three bowls of water until reduced to eighty percent volume, then administer. For unruptured lesions, one dose resolves it; for ruptured lesions, three doses are required until pus is exhausted and flesh regenerates.
If it is Yin syndrome, there will inevitably be numerous small sores nearby, starting with itching followed by pain, leading to ulceration. The swelling is not highly protruding, the color is dark, the body feels heavy and lethargic with a desire to sleep, and moaning is weak. The following prescription is applicable:
Renshen (Ginseng Radix) 1 liang, Sheng Huangqi (Astragali Radix) 1 liang, Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 1 liang, Jinyinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos) 2 liang, Baijiezi (Sinapis Semen) 3 qian, Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex) 1 qian, Chao Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma Preparatum) 1 liang.
Decoct in water and take orally. Bleeding stops after one dose, flesh regenerates after two doses, the wound shrinks after three doses, skin closes after four doses, and full recovery is achieved after two additional doses.
