In the spring of the Gui-Chou year, Magistrate Zhang of the city, aged over thirty, was physically robust and obese, with sound spirit and health. His food intake was double that of an ordinary person. Imperial Physician Wang Yanbao said, "You are so obese; if you do not take cooling medicines in advance, it is feared that heat diseases will arise." Magistrate Zhang followed this advice and took two liang of Sanyi Chengqi Tang (Three-One Purging Decoction), resulting in more than thirty episodes of diarrhea. Some days later, he felt a dull abdominal pain, lost his appetite, and found no taste in food. He experienced epigastric fullness and stuffiness, and mental fatigue. Subsequently, chest and diaphragm obstruction developed, accompanied by occasional stabbing pains like those from a knife. If he ate slightly more, he suffered from acid regurgitation, abdominal distension, and indigestion. He reported this to me. I said, "Previously, you were vigorous, eating and drinking as usual, with blood and qi circulating freely according to natural laws. The twelve zang organs coordinated with each other, each fulfilling its duties, with harmonious spirit and peaceful body. You have harmed yourself, causing the disruption of the Chong Qi (Penetrating Vessel/Energy) and leading to such illness. Even if you regret it now, what can be done?" I then prescribed Sizijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction), a sweet-warm formula, to tonify the spleen and stabilize the stomach, adding additional Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), Huang Qi (Astragalus Root), and Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) to raise yang and tonify qi. I advised him to be cautious with daily routines and regulate his diet. After taking the medicine for over a month, his chest felt clear and comfortable, and the pain ceased. Although the pathogenic factor was eliminated, his righteous qi (Zheng Qi) did not fully recover. Within less than thirty days, he died from stroke (Zhong Feng). The *Linglan Midian Lun* states: "If the Sovereign (Heart) is unclear, the Twelve Officials (Organs) are in danger." The physical form suffers greatly; using this method for health preservation leads to disaster, and using it to govern the world brings great peril to the ancestral temple. Beware, beware! Qixuanzi (Wang Bing) stated: "If the Heart is unclear, right and wrong become indistinguishable; if right and wrong are indistinguishable, benefit and loss cannot be differentiated; if benefit and loss are not differentiated, actions invite misfortune, trapping the body in emaciation and weakness." Thus, the physical form suffers greatly. If the Sovereign is unclear, affairs are delegated to attendants on the left and right; if delegated to attendants, those in power act arbitrarily; if those in power act arbitrarily, officials do not uphold the law; if officials do not uphold the law, the people lose their place and suffer injustice. Moreover, the people are the root of the state; when the root is solid, the state is peaceful. If the root is insecure, what can the state have? How can the master of the ancestral temple avoid peril? Therefore, it is said: Beware, beware. Magistrate Zhang failed to examine his own safety and distinguish between benefit and loss, recklessly undergoing treatment and inviting disaster. This is truly lamentable. The past cannot be blamed, but future generations should take this as a clear warning.
