Zhang Yunfu, Pacification Commissioner of Shunde, aged forty-five. Suffered from Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst). Tongue was red and cracked. Drank excessively. Frequent urination. My former teacher treated him with this medicine. He recovered well within ten days. The ancients said: Xiao Ke often transforms into sores and ulcers, becoming incurable. However, after taking this medicine effectively, he did not develop sores or ulcers. He lived to be seventy-five years old before passing away. This formula is named Sheng Jin Gan Lu Yin.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Shan Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (roasted), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) (wine-washed), Jiang Huang (Curcumae Longae Rhizoma), Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) (each 2 qian), Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Bai Dou Kou (Amomi Fructus Rotundus), Bi Cheng Qie (Schizonepetae Fructus? Note: Usually refers to Schizonepeta or similar aromatic fruit, contextually likely Schizonepetae Fructus or Piperis Fructus, here kept as Bi Cheng Qie), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 1 qian), Bai Kui (Alismatis Rhizoma? Or possibly a typo for Bai Zhu/Bai Shao, but text says Bai Kui, likely Alisma or similar diuretic herb, keeping literal), Lan Xiang (Costi Rhizoma? Or Litseae Folium, contextually aromatic), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber) (each 0.5 qian), Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex) (wine-mixed), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) (each 2.5 qian; one prescription uses 1.1 liang), Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructus) (1 qian), Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) (1.5 qian), Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) (each 0.3 qian), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix) (3 qian), Quan Xie (Scorpio) (1 piece), Huo Xiang (Agastaches Herba) (0.2 qian).

Place in palm, lick with tongue, swallow with saliva. Alternatively, take with a little warm water. This adopts a gentle treatment method. It not only prevents middle-jiao fullness but also prevents transformation into sores/ulcers and Lower Xiao (Lower Wasting-Thirst).
Discussion states: Xiao disease is caused by exuberant Dryness-Heat qi. The *Neijing* states: When Heat is excessive, assist with sweet and bitter agents; use sweet to drain heat. Heat injures Qi; Qi injury leads to lack of moistening. To reduce heat and tonify Qi, only sweet-cold formulas can achieve this. Therefore, use the sweet-cold properties of Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) and Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) as Sovereign (Jun) herbs. Qixuanzi said: Nourish the source of Water to suppress Solar flare-up. Therefore, use the bitter-cold properties of Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex), Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus), and Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) to drain heat and replenish fluids as Minister (Chen) herbs. Use Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), Quan Xie (Scorpio), Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Bai Kui (Alismatis Rhizoma?), Lan Xiang (Costi Rhizoma/Litseae Folium?) which are sweet, pungent, and cold to harmonize blood and dryness-moisten as Assistant (Zuo) herbs. Use Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) and Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) which are bitter and neutral to circulate through the Yangming and Shaoyang meridians; Bai Dou Kou (Amomi Fructus Rotundus), Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Huo Xiang (Agastaches Herba), and Bi Cheng Qie (Schizonepetae Fructus?) act as counter-assistants (Fan Zuo) to achieve effect. Because Jie Geng (Platocodonis Radix) is used as a boat/oar, it keeps the action floating rather than descending. Mr. Dongyuan once told me: The elder Jiegou said: For those who can eat but feel thirsty, use Bai Hu Jia Ren Shen Tang (White Tiger Plus Ginseng Decoction) doubled, made into large decoctions and taken frequently. For those who cannot eat but feel thirsty, use Qian Shi Bai Zhu San (Dr. Qian's Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) with doubled Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), made into large decoctions and taken widely.
[Jiu Zheng Huang Lian Wan] (Jiu-Zheng Coptis Pill) treats Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst).
Use Ban jin of Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) and 1 sheng of Jiu (Alcohol). Steam heavily over boiling water. Take out during Wu hours (noon), sun-dry, grind into powder. Add drops of water to form pills the size of wutong seeds. Take 50 pills per dose with warm water.
[Shen Ling Yin Zi] (Shenling Drink) treats dry mouth and throat. Generates body fluids. Promotes appetite.
Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) (each 3 liang), Bai Fu Ling (Poria) (2.5 qian), Tian Men Dong (Asparagi Tuber), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 5 qian).
Grind the above into coarse powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Add 1.5 zhan of water, 3 slices of Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), 2 dates (Da Zao), 1 Wu Mei (Mume Fructus). Decoct until 1 zhan remains. Remove dregs. Take warm. After meals.
[Mai Men Dong Yin Zi] (Mai Men Dong Drink) treats Ge Xiao (Diaphragmatic Thirst) with chest fullness and vexation. Scarcity of body fluids causing shortness of breath. Often manifests as Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst).
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood), Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (stir-fried), Gua Lou Gen (Trichosanthis Radix), Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) (equal parts).
Cut the above into small pieces. Take 5 qian per dose. Add 2 zhan of water, 14 leaves of Zhu Ye (Bambusae Folium). Decoct until 0.7 zhan remains. Remove dregs. Take warm. No specific timing.
[Mai Men Dong Tang] (Mai Men Dong Decoction) treats Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst) with incessant day-and-night drinking. Urination occurs immediately after drinking. This formula, along with Dong Gua Yin Zi (Winter Melon Drink), was obtained from Zhang Wenzhu.
Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Dong Gua Gan (Dried Winter Melon Flesh) (each 2 liang).
Grind the above into coarse powder. Take 5 qian per dose. Add 1 zhan of water. Decoct until 0.7 zhan remains. Remove dregs. Take warm. If dried winter melon is unavailable, use one fresh Dong Gua (Benincasae Fructus) weighing 3 jin. Peel and remove pulp. Divide into twelve slices for twelve doses. Another prescription: Break one slice of Dong Gua (Benincasae Fructus). Add 3 zhan of water. Decoct until 0.7 zhan remains. Remove dregs. Take warm. Three times daily.
[Dong Gua Yin Zi] (Dong Gua Drink) treats Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst) with increased appetite and excessive drinking. Urine resembles fat bran flakes. Day and night without limit.
Dong Gua (Benincasae Fructus) (one), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (10 liang, ground into powder).
First, cut open the Dong Gua (Benincasae Fructus), clean out the pulp. Sprinkle the Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) powder inside the Dong Gua (Benincasae Fructus). Replace the top cover. Roast in hot ashes/fire until cooked. Peel, finely chop, and mash. Extract juice using cloth. Take 1 to 2 zhan per dose. Before meals. Three times daily, two times at night.
