In the past, Chu Cheng of the Song Dynasty treated nuns, monks, and widows by creating separate prescriptions, which was based on specific reasoning. These two types of individuals (nuns and widows) lived in solitude, possessing only Yin without Yang. Their sexual desire would arise but often remained unfulfilled. Consequently, Yin and Yang would contend with each other, resulting in alternating chills and fever, resembling warm malaria (Wen Nue). If prolonged, this condition would develop into consumptive disease (Lao). I once read the "Biography of Cang Gong" in the *Records of the Grand Historian* (*Shiji*), which recorded that Han Nu, a maid-servant of King Jibei, suffered from lower back and abdominal pain accompanied by alternating chills and fever. Many physicians diagnosed her with a cold-heat disorder, but treatment failed to cure her. Cang Gong stated, "This illness arises from desiring a man but being unable to obtain one." The crowd asked, "How do you know she desires a man but cannot obtain one?" Cang Gong replied, "Upon palpating her pulse, the Liver pulse is wiry and extends beyond the Cun position, reaching up to the Yuji area; thus, I know this." Generally, men are governed by Essence (Jing), while women are governed by Blood (Xue). When a man's Essence is abundant, he yearns for sexual intercourse; when a woman's Blood is abundant, she is capable of conceiving. The Liver stores and regulates Blood. If the Jueyin Liver pulse is wiry and extends beyond the Cun position, reaching up to the Yuji, it indicates an abundance of Yin. Therefore, I understand that Chu Cheng's words indeed have a basis.
[Tongjing Pill] Treats irregular menstruation and pain in married or unmarried women, or the formation of blood masses (Xue Xia).
Guixin (Cinnamon Heart), Chuan Wutou (Aconiti Radix Lateralis Preparata), Taoren (Persicae Semen), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Guangzhu (Curcumae Rhizoma, processed), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, processed), Chuanjiao (Sichuan Pepper, stir-fried until oil appears), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, baked), Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride, white pith removed, all in equal parts).
Grind the above nine ingredients into powder. For every liang of powder, use 4 qian of rice vinegar to boil into a paste. Mix this paste with the remaining 6 qian of powder in a mortar, pound a thousand times. Form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 20 pills per dose, administered with light vinegar water. The dosage can be increased to 30 pills. Warm wine may also be used. A woman suffering from pain due to coagulation of Qi and Blood recovered after several doses.
[Shengdihuang Pill] Scholar Xu treated a nun who suffered from aversion to wind, fatigue, alternating chills and fever, flushed face, palpitations, and spontaneous sweating. At that time, epidemic pathogenic factors were prevalent. Physicians saw her chills and fever and treated her as a Shanghan (Cold Damage) disease, administering Da Chaihu Tang and Xiao Chaihu Tang mixed together for several days. Her condition worsened, so she summoned me for treatment. Upon examination, I said: "The pulses in the three positions show no signs of cold pathogens; rather, the Jueyin pulse is wiry, long, and reaches the Yuji. It is appropriate to treat with Yin-suppressing medications." Therefore, I formulated this prescription.
Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix, 2 liang), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, each 0.5 liang), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix, 1 liang).
Grind the above ingredients into fine powder. Form pills with honey the size of paulownia seeds. Take 30 pills per dose, swallowed with sour plum tea. Take three times daily, at any time.
[Shudihuang Pill] Treats irregular menstruation in women, where bleeding lasts for several days without stopping, accompanied by leukorrhea. The patient gradually becomes emaciated and weak, loses appetite, and has been childless for years.
Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, 2 liang 2 fen), Shanzhuyu (Corni Fructus), Baiwuyi (Meliosmae Fructus), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, processed), Daizheshi (Haematitum, quenched in vinegar), Baishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, stir-fried, each 1 liang), Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, prepared with ginger juice), Baijiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus, stir-fried, each 0.5 liang).
Grind the above eight ingredients into powder. Form pills with refined honey the size of paulownia seeds. Take 40-50 pills per dose, administered with wine, before meals. Take three times daily.
