The classic texts state: For conditions characterized by impetuosity and hyperactivity, they can be restrained by applying pressure (an, massage). It also says: to rub (mo) and to bathe (yu) them. This indicates that the methods of massage (anmo) were also highly valued by the ancients. The Tang Dynasty established a specialized department for massage (anmo), with dedicated "massage students" (anmo sheng). The tuina practiced today is actually the inherited method from ancient massage. However, those who practice it are mostly women, who may not fully master the subtleties of techniques like pushing (tui), grasping (na), pressing (an), rubbing (mo), moving (dong), and stretching (shen). Mr. Zhang Xiaoshan from our prefecture, harboring the ambition to benefit the world, devoted himself to the study of medicine. He recently obtained two volumes of the Zhou family's tuina book, which Mr. Zhang Xinqiao entrusted him to collate and correct. Following the methods described, he achieved immediate effectiveness upon application. Consequently, he rectified the disorder, corrected the errors, removed the redundant and verbose content, and refined the crude and shallow language. He further incorporated the famous sayings of ancient sages and effective external treatment methods to enrich it. He differentiated patterns (bianzheng), established treatment methods (lifa), researched acupoints (xuewei), and drew diagrams, all in a clear and orderly manner, making the content comprehensive and brilliant. It is truly an essential technique for saving lives and a new book for protecting infants. Bian Que said: What people worry about is having too many diseases; what doctors worry about is having too few methods to treat diseases. Doctors who obtain and study this book can avoid the criticism of "having too few methods." Tuina practitioners who receive this orthodox transmission will also not cause harm to infants due to erroneous methods. Even in remote villages with illness but no doctors, following the methods in this book for treatment can yield results. It is foreseeable that wherever massage reaches, it brings recovery. This will cause the ancient medical methods of Huangdi (Yellow Emperor) and Qibo to flourish again today. How could this merely make him a benefactor of the Zhou family?
Winter, twelfth month, the fourteenth year of the Guangxu reign, Wuzi year.
Jiangdu Sun Fengxiang, Dushan, respectfully recorded.
In ancient times, Huangdi (Yellow Emperor) and Shennong (Divine Farmer) tasted hundreds of herbs, established formulas and medical texts, and authored classics such as *Lingshu* (Spiritual Pivot) and *Suwen* (Plain Questions). Their intention was to disseminate them throughout the world and pass them on to later generations, enabling everyone to understand their methods, treat their illnesses, and thereby save human lives. How could they have ever hoarded them as rare commodities or kept them as secret, untransmitted knowledge? I have never known medicine. When my eldest son, Xiaode, was just three years old, he contracted infantile malnutrition (ganji). The more he was treated, the more critical his condition became. Everyone believed there was no hope for survival. Having heard that Huangdi had massage methods particularly suitable for children, I had long sought this knowledge but could not obtain it. Coincidentally, a clansman was skilled in this technique. After three sessions of massage (anmo), the child had a bowel movement producing black stool, and from then on recovered completely. There were many such cases of cure. Therefore, I admired his skill but regretted that it was kept secret. Unexpectedly, heaven took his spirit; his life and his technique both ended. Later, due to certain matters, I stayed at his home and saw a book titled *Xiao'er Tuina Yaojue* (Essential Formulas of Pediatric Tuina) on his bookshelf. Upon翻阅ing through it once, I learned that tuina is simply another name for massage (anmo). I happily borrowed it to copy, intending to promote and spread it to save lives. His family members were reluctant to give it, saying, "This is a secret formula (mifang); be careful not to泄露 it." Having no other recourse, I仿效ed the stories of Xiao Yi cleverly obtaining the *Lanting Xu* (Preface to the Orchid Pavilion) and Huan Xuan secretly opening the painting cabinet, and privately took it to copy. It remained in my home for over twenty years. I repeatedly consulted various physicians about it, but they were all perplexed and could not grasp its essentials. Mr. Zhang Xiaoshan, an educational official from Baoying, tirelessly delights in doing good, and his reputation for benevolence has long been evident. He has always esteemed classics like *Lingshu* and *Suwen* and has extensively read medical texts. He is thus highly experienced in this medical path. Therefore, whenever he treats a disease pattern (zheng), he必定审慎周详ly examines it; whenever he prescribes a formula, he often brings the dying back to life. He earnestly keeps the intention of providing relief in mind and cautions against treating human life and death as child's play. I have long admired him in my heart. I specially presented this book to him, and Mr. Xiaoshan also showed joyful delight. He undertook the responsibility of its publication. He specifically删除了 its繁芜 content,祛除了 its错误驳杂 parts, classified it into categories, arranged it in an orderly manner, prefaced it with explanatory notes (fali), drew its original diagrams, and extensively collected and integrated content from various books, making it一目了然. Whether one knows medicine or not, one can treat diseases according to the diagrams without omission or error. From now on, as it is disseminated throughout the world and passed on to later generations, enabling the rescue of severe illnesses (chenke) and the attainment of健康长寿 (renshou), the credit belongs entirely to Mr. Xiaoshan and Mr. Guangwen. The blessings sown are immeasurable, the virtue accumulated is boundless. My decades-long unfulfilled wish has finally seen its completion in my old age. This is undoubtedly a great fortune of three lifetimes. Now that the carving is finished, I hereby narrate its beginning and end and record my feelings of gratitude and admiration as a preface.
