Postpartum weakness and emaciation, with panting and rapid breathing resembling malaria, is named "Rulao" (Puerperal Exhaustion). Use one pair of pig kidneys, three he of white glutinous rice, five he of fermented soybeans (Douchi), one sheng of green onion white bundles wrapped in cotton, Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), and three sheng of water. Decoct to obtain eight he, divided into two or three doses.
Another prescription: Use Dang Gui Lamb Soup (Danggui Yangrou Tang) to strongly tonify postpartum deficiency and exhaustion.
For postpartum Rulao with continuous profuse sweating due to deficiency, use Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Bai Fu Ling (Poria), Mahuang Gen (Ephedrae Radix et Rhizoma), and Mu Li (Ostreae Concha), each three qian. Take one hen, remove feathers and clean thoroughly, add six or seven bowls of water, decoct with the herbs until three bowls remain, and take as desired.
Another prescription: For postpartum lochia not yet ceased accompanied by abdominal pain, use Yan Hu Suo (Corydalis Rhizoma) powdered, taken with hot wine, three qian per dose; effective.
Another prescription: Use Wu Ling Zhi (Trogopterori Faeces) powdered, two qian, taken with hot wine.

More than twenty days after delivery, severe headache intolerable to bear: Use Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) (see Internal Injury chapter for formula), plus Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Gao Ben (Ligustici Rhizoma et Radix), and Man Jing Zi (Vittariae Spora), decocted in water and taken orally; pain stops immediately.

Clean the pig trotter thoroughly, cut according to dietary therapy methods, add six bowls of water, decoct together with Tong Cao and other herbs, then add green onion and ginger, simmer until about three bowls remain. Strain and drink the juice. Avoid cold foods; consume soups and stews to assist blood and qi, so that milk will naturally increase. Avoid wind and cold; do not neglect covering in summer months. Washing breasts with green onion water occasionally is beneficial.
There are two primary causes for failure of lactation in puerperae:
First, when lactation fails due to insufficiency of blood and qi, use formulas like Pig Trotter Soup; this is tonifying the deficient.
Second, when lactation fails in obese women due to excessive phlegm and qi stagnation blocking the milk channels, use formulas like Lou Lu Tang; this is promoting flow in the excess.
Lou Lu Tang treats obese women with stagnant pulses, obstructed qi mechanism, and scanty milk. Use Lou Lu (Rhynchotechti Herba) two liang, She Tui (Bombyx Batryticatus), and Tu Gua Gen (Trichosanthes Kirilowii Radix) ten roots. First decoct pig trotter juice, then use it to decoct the herbs before taking.
Another prescription: Take Gua Lou Gen (Trichosanthis Radix) powdered, two qian, mixed with wine.

Another prescription: Boil Chi Xiao Dou (Vigna umbellata Seed) in water and drink frequently; milk will flow like a spring.
