The *Xue Qi Xing Zhi Pian* (Chapter on Blood, Qi, Constitution, and Will) states: The constant laws of the human body are that the Taiyang (Greater Yang) channel usually has abundant blood and deficient qi; Shaoyang (Lesser Yang) usually has deficient blood and abundant qi; Yangming (Bright Yang) usually has abundant blood and abundant qi; Shaoyin (Lesser Yin) usually has deficient blood and abundant qi; Jueyin (Terminal Yin) usually has abundant blood and deficient qi; and Taiyin (Greater Yin) usually has abundant qi and deficient blood. These are the constant laws of Heaven.
The abundance or deficiency of meridians, blood, and qi in the human body corresponds to the waxing and waning of cold and heat in the Heavenly Dao. Qi belongs to Yang and corresponds to Heat; Blood belongs to Yin and corresponds to Cold. Taiyang corresponds to the Cold Qi among the Six Qi of Heaven. At this time, the weather is predominantly cold and Heat is declining, corresponding to the Hand and Foot Taiyang channels, which exhibit abundant blood and deficient qi. Shaoyang corresponds to the Fire Qi among the Three Qi of Heaven. At this time, the weather is predominantly hot and Cold is declining, corresponding to the Hand and Foot Shaoyang channels, which exhibit deficient blood and abundant qi. Yangming corresponds to the Dryness Qi among the Five Qi of Heaven. At this time, the weather is first hot then cold, corresponding to the Hand and Foot Yangming channels, which exhibit abundant qi and abundant blood. Shaoyin corresponds to the Heat Qi among the Two Qi of Heaven. At this time, Cold is less prevalent and Heat is more prevalent, corresponding to the Hand and Foot Shaoyin channels, which exhibit deficient blood and abundant qi. Jueyin corresponds to the Wind Qi, the initial Qi of Heaven. At this time, Cold is predominant and Heat is declining, corresponding to the Hand and Foot Jueyin channels, which exhibit abundant blood and deficient qi. Taiyin corresponds to the Dampness Qi among the Four Qi of Heaven. At this time, Heat is predominant and Cold is declining, corresponding to the Hand and Foot Taiyin channels, which exhibit abundant qi and deficient blood. Thus it is said: these are the constant laws of the Heavenly Dao.
The Foot Taiyang Bladder Channel and the Foot Shaoyin Kidney Channel are exterior-interior pairs; the Foot Shaoyang Gallbladder Channel and the Foot Jueyin Liver Channel are exterior-interior pairs; the Foot Yangming Stomach Channel and the Foot Taiyin Spleen Channel are exterior-interior pairs. These constitute the Yin-Yang relationships of the lower limbs. The Hand Taiyang Small Intestine Channel and the Hand Shaoyin Heart Channel are exterior-interior pairs; the Hand Shaoyang Sanjiao Channel and the Hand Jueyin Pericardium Channel are exterior-interior pairs; the Hand Yangming Large Intestine Channel and the Hand Taiyin Lung Channel are exterior-interior pairs. These constitute the Yin-Yang relationships of the upper limbs.
In the *Yin Yang Li He Pian* (Chapter on the Separation and Union of Yin and Yang), the Yellow Emperor asked: I wish to hear about the separation and union of the Three Yin and Three Yang. Qibo replied: When a sage stands facing South, the front is called Guangming (Broad Brightness), and the back is called Taichong (Great Surge). The South corresponds to the Bing-Ding Fire position, where Yang Qi is abundant and bright, hence called Guangming. "Guang" means large; governing while facing brightness, the sage stands facing South. However, within the human body, the Heart is located anteriorly (South), so the front is termed Guangming. The Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel) is located posteriorly (North), so the back is termed Taichong. Taichong refers to the convergence and flourishing of the Kidney Meridian and the Penetrating Vessel, hence called Taichong. The place of Taichong is named Shaoyin; above Shaoyin is named Taiyang.
The Kidney is Yin, and the Bladder Fu-organ is Yang. Yin Qi is below, Yang Qi is above; this constitutes the meridian qi of exterior-interior unity.
The Taiyang channel originates at Zhiyin (BL67), terminates at Mingmen (the eyes), and is named Yang within Yin.
Because the Taiyang channel resides in the territory of Shaoyin, it is called Yang within Yin.
The middle and upper body is named Guangming; below Guangming is named Taiyin.
The upper body is called Guangming, and the lower body is called Taiyin. It is also said that below the Heart lies the Taiyin Spleen.
Anterior to Taiyin is named Yangming.
The Yangming Stomach Meridian runs anterior to the Spleen Meridian, and the Taiyin Spleen Meridian runs posterior to the Stomach Meridian.
The Yangming channel originates at Lidui (ST45) and is named Yang within Yin.
Because the Yangming channel resides anterior to Taiyin, it is called Yang within Yin.
The exterior of Jueyin is named Shaoyang.
The Shaoyang channel resides at the exterior of Jueyin and is named Lesser Yang within Yin.
The Shaoyang channel originates at Xiaoyin (GB44) and is named Lesser Yang within Yin. This is the separation and union of the Three Yang channels.
"Separation" (Li) refers to distinct application; "Union" (He) refers to coordination with Yin. Separated, they occupy their proper positions as the Three Yang; united, their exterior-interior relationship forms the Zang-Fu organs.
Taiyang governs Opening (Kai); Yangming governs Closing (He); Shaoyang governs Pivot (Shu).
Taiyang manages the mechanism of movement and stillness, thus it is the Opening. Yangming holds the authority of consolidation, thus it is the Closing. Shaoyang manages the subtleties of movement and stillness, thus it is the Pivot.
These three channels must not deviate from each other. If the pulse is firm but not floating, it is called One Yang.
"Firm but not floating" indicates a pulse with Stomach Qi. With Stomach Qi present, the Three Yang are unified and do not deviate, hence called One Yang.
I wish to know about the Three Yin. Qibo replied: The exterior is Yang, the interior is Yin. However, the middle is Yin (Middle implies Interior). Its Chong Mai is below, named Taiyin.
The Penetrating Vessel is below the Spleen, hence described as "below." This refers to the positions of the Zang organs and the sequence of the meridians.
The Taiyin channel originates at Yinbai (SP1) and is named Yin within Yin. Posterior to Taiyin is named Shaoyin.
Below and posterior to the Spleen is the location of the Kidney. The Taiyin meridian originates at the tip of the great toe; the Shaoyin meridian originates below the little toe.
The Shaoyin channel originates at Yongquan (KI1) and is named Lesser Yin within Yin. Anterior to Shaoyin is named Jueyin.
The Jueyin channel originates at Dacun (LR1) and is named Terminal Yin within Yin. This is the separation and union of the Three Yin channels: Taiyin governs Opening, Jueyin governs Closing, and Shaoyin governs Pivot.
These three channels must not deviate from each other. If the pulse is broad but not sinking, it is called One Yin.
"Jue" means exhaustion; Yin reaches its limit here, hence called Terminal Yin within Yin. Anterior to the Stomach organ, near the Liver's position, the Jueyin meridian crosses out posterior to the Taiyin meridian.
"Broad but not sinking," not weak or hidden, is also a pulse with Stomach Qi.
The *Jing Mai Pian* (Chapter on the Meridians) records: The Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian originates in the Middle Jiao, descends to connect with the Large Intestine, returns along the stomach opening, ascends through the diaphragm, and enters the Lung.
