A fifty-year-old man suffered from a toxic sore in the axilla with a non-healing wound. His right Guan pulse was rapid, accompanied by thirst; this indicated Stomach Fire (Wei Huo). After taking Zhuye Shigao Tang (Bamboo Leaf and Gypsum Decoction), the symptoms ceased, and he recovered after taking Qi-tonifying medicines. I once treated a patient with afternoon fever and thirst using Digupi San (Lycium Bark Powder) with good effect.
A woman had a nodule under her hypochondrium for over twenty years due to anger and depression. The swelling and pain worsened after an outburst of anger, accompanied by undigested food in the stool and poor appetite; this indicated Spleen and Stomach deficiency. She was treated with Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) plus Amomi Fructus (Sharen), Cinnamomi Cortex (Rougui), Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang), and Myristicae Semen (Roudoukou). Although diarrhea stopped, the pus remained thin and the wound did not heal. She then took Shiquan Dabu Tang (Comprehensive Great Tonifying Decoction) and recovered after more than a month.
A forty-year-old man developed a toxic sore in the axilla during summer. After ulceration, it failed to close, with thin pus, cold skin, weak pulse, borborygmus with severe pain, loose stools, and vomiting immediately after eating. This indicated a transformation into cold with sinking pathogens, requiring strongly acrid and warm formulas. He took Tuoli Wenzhong Tang (Support Interior and Warm Middle Decoction) for one or two doses, after which all symptoms subsided. Subsequently, he took Liujunzi Tang plus Pao Ganjiang (Prepared Ginger) and Rougui for several doses, followed by Shiquan Dabu Tang, leading to recovery.
A man had a lump under his hypochondrium that did not ulcerate for a long time. Palpation caused slight pain, and the pulse was faint and choppy, indicating both physical and pathological deficiency. As the Classic states: "When form and qi are insufficient, and pathogenic qi is insufficient, tonification is indicated rather than purgation." Ren Shen Yang Rong Tang (Ginseng and Blood-Nourishing Decoction) was appropriate. The patient did not believe this and instead took Liuqi Yin (Flowing Qi Drink), causing all deficiency symptoms to appear. Only then did he take the previous prescription. After more than a month, there was slight improvement, but the swelling remained hard. Moxibustion with heated Artemisia argyi leaves (Ai Ye) was applied to the affected area. By the tenth day, pus formed. It was punctured with a fire needle, followed by moxibustion with Fermented Soybean Cake (Douchi Bing), and he took Shiquan Dabu Tang for one hundred doses before stabilizing.
A man suffered from fever due to overwork and swelling and pain in the hypochondrium. Although the pulse was large, it was empty upon deep pressure, indicating Qi deficiency with loose interstices allowing pathogenic factors to invade the muscle layer. Tonification was needed to support deficient Qi. Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Middle-Boosting Qi-Rescuing Decoction) plus Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo) was given for four doses, resulting in slight relief. Qianghuo was removed, and he took the formula for another hundred doses until recovery.
A forty-year-old man had a chest sore that formed a fistula, discharging about a bowl of pus daily. Despite this, his appetite remained normal. He was treated with Shiquan Dabu Tang plus Polygalae Radix (Yuanzhi), Fritillariae Bulbus (Beimu), Phellodendri Cortex (Baiban), and Dipsaci Radix (Xuduan), along with moxibustion using Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi) cake. Pus gradually decreased, and after more than a year of care, he recovered.
A man had a chest swelling that persisted for half a year without resolving. He underwent one hundred moxa cones before ulceration. Although he took great tonifying medicines, the wound did not heal until he underwent moxibustion with Fuzi cake, after which he recovered.
A woman with a irritable temperament experienced chest pain with unchanged skin color and a rapid pulse with aversion to cold. The Classic states: "A surging and rapid pulse should correspond to fever, but if aversion to cold is present, it indicates a carbuncle or furuncle." The surging and rapid pulse indicated pus formation. Due to her robust physique, the skin color did not change, making it seem like no pus was present. Due to extreme pain, she allowed needling. Several inches were inserted, releasing several bowls of pus. She was treated with Qinggan Jiedu Yao (Liver-Clearing and Toxin-Resolving Medicines) and recovered.
A young woman had an opening in her chest and epigastrium discharging pus and blood corresponding to what she coughed up. She was cured using Ginseng, [missing character], Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), and other heat-clearing and pus-draining medicines.
