Women with a deficient constitution are susceptible to wind-pathogenic qi lodging in the skin. When combined with cold-wind, wind-pruritus and urticaria (Feng Sao Yin Zhen) arise. Red rashes result from cool-dampness impairing the muscle layer, where extreme heat within the muscles condenses to form red rashes. Symptoms worsen in hot weather and improve upon exposure to cold. White rashes occur when wind-pathogen invades the muscle layer; heat within the muscles combats with wind, resulting in white rashes. Symptoms exacerbate during cloudy, rainy, or cold weather, and upon exposure to wind, but alleviate in sunny, warm conditions and when keeping warm with clothing. The pulse should be floating and surging (Fu Hong); floating indicates wind, while surging indicates qi. The combat between wind and qi manifests as urticaria, accompanied by body pruritus. Generally, after sweating, one should not lie exposed outdoors or bathe, as this may induce chills, fever, and wind-rashes.
The *Ju Fang* treats women suffering from frequent generalized pruritus, red swollen urticaria, five-palm heat (Wu Xin Fan Re), and blood-wind attacking and pouring through. Formulas include Ren Shen Jing Jie San (Ginseng and Schizonepeta Powder), Xiao Feng San (Eliminate Wind Powder), Si Wu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with Jing Jie (Schizonepeta), or Ren Shen Dang Gui San (Ginseng and Angelica Powder), Xiao Yao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder), or Dao Chi Wan (Guide Out the Red Pill). For cases with constipation, Zao Jiao Wan (Gleditsia Sinensis Pill) is taken after meals. (Contraindicated for long-term use in those with Qi deficiency and the elderly.) If Zao Jiao Wan is ineffective, it indicates severe stagnation of heat; Qing Mu Xiang Wan (Aucklandia Pill) should be taken first to open the Qi mechanism, followed by the aforementioned formulas for efficacy.
