When the Yùn (Climate/Operation) combines with the Qi in the Lower Palace (Zai Quan), the resulting Qi transformation is termed: for Yang years, "Tong Tian Fu" (Same Heaven符); for Yin years, "Tong Sui Hui" (Same Year Meeting). Thus, within a sixty-year cycle, Tai Yi Tian Fu occurs in 4 years, Tian Fu in 12 years, Sui Hui in 8 years, Tong Tian Fu in 6 years, and Tong Sui Hui in 6 years. Counting these five categories separately yields 36 years; counting them collectively yields only 27 years. The classic text mentions 24 years because it does not include Sui Hui. Variations in movement and quantity lead to differences in disease manifestation (mild or severe) and timing of life and death. By following the classics and calculating, this can indeed be known.
[Diagram of Tong Tian Fu and Tong Sui Hui]
*General Song on Tian Fu, Tai Yi Tian Fu, Sui Hui, Tong Tian Fu, and Tong Sui Hui*
When Si Tian (Heavenly Ruler Qi), Yun (Annual Operation), and Nian Zhi (Earthly Branch of the year) interact, they form Tai Yi Tian Fu.
When Yun combines with Nian Zhi, it is named Sui Hui; Earth Yun meeting Chen, Xu, Chou, or Wei (the four cardinal directions) must follow this path.
When Zai Quan combines with Yun, Yin years are Tong Sui Hui, while Yang years are Tong Tian Fu.
Why is Tian Fu singled out? Its meaning lies in Si Tian combining with Yun.
"Fu" means conformity. "Tai Yi" is an honorific title. Only when Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei (which reside in the positions of Zi, Wu, Mao, You) act as the main Sui Hui do they qualify; other years do not fit the central combination rule. When pathogenic factors attack humans, Tai Yi Tian Fu causes sudden death; Sui Hui leads to a slow but persistent course; Tian Fu results in rapid and critical illness.
Regardless of whether diagrams are present, reading this song allows one to understand its principles, so it is recorded here.
If the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches of the year and month do not match, and no Sheng (Overcoming) or Fu (Rebounding) Qi occurs, the climate remains balanced.
After the Sheng Qi passes and the Fu Qi completes its cycle, the Ben Qi (Original Qi) returns to its proper virtuous position.
At the beginning of the first Qi, around the Great Cold solar term, if the day's Stem matches the year's Stem, it indicates balance.
If the Stem at the time of Qi transition also matches, both scenarios indicate the arrival of Ping Qi (Balanced Qi).
For example, in the Ding You year, Wood Yun is insufficient, so Metal Qi acts as Sheng. In the first month, the branch Ren combines with Ding, indicating Wood encountering Sheng (adjustment). In the Ji Mao year, Earth Yun is insufficient, so Wood Qi acts as Sheng. When Metal Qi rebounds (Fu), in the ninth month, the branch Jia combines with Ji, allowing Earth to return to its position. This illustrates the completion of Sheng after overcoming and Fu after rebounding. Except for the transition into the first Qi, interactions among Year, Day, and Hour stems may meet but do not fully align or combine perfectly, such as the case of Jia combining with Ji.
