Item 288. Xingren Decoction (Apricot Seed Decoction) Treats Shanghan (Cold Damage) presenting with heavy voice, sudden cough, and aphonia (loss of voice).
Sangbaipi (Morus Alba Root Bark), Wuweizi (Schisandra Chinensis Fruit) (each 1 liang); Xingren (Prunus Armeniaca Seed) (3 liang); Ziwan (Aster Tataricus Root), Beimu (Fritillaria Cirrhosa Bulb), Mutong (Akebia Trifoliata Caulis) (each 8 qian); Fengmi (Honey) (2 liang).
Boil the above five ingredients together with four to five bowls of water until reduced to half a bowl. Strain the dregs. Then, grind Xingren (Prunus Armeniaca Seed) and Shengjiang (Zingiber Officinale Rhizome with skin, two halves) together with Fengmi (Honey) into a paste. Add this paste to the medicinal liquid and store. Each time, take a spoonful, hold in the mouth to dissolve slowly. Take four to five times daily.
Item 289. YingShou Formula (Responsive Formula) Treats Shanghan (Cold Damage) causing the tongue to protrude more than one cun and remain extended for several days without retracting.
Meihua Bingpian (Borneol from Dryobalanops aromatica) (grind into powder and apply to the tongue; it retracts upon application. For severe cases, use 1 qian to achieve retraction).
Item 290. Baijing Diqiu (White-necked Earthworm) Treats Yang syndrome critical condition approaching death, JieXiong (Chest Binding syndrome), where no other medicine is available.
Baijing Diqiu (White-necked Earthworm) (more than ten earthworms, mash them thoroughly, add half a cup of Fengmi (Honey) and half a bowl of cold water, and administer orally. If Fengmi (Honey) is unavailable, white sugar can be used instead).
Item 291. Xiaoyao Powder (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) Treats post-Shanghan (Cold Damage) sweating where Qi and Blood have not yet stabilized. Overexertion leading to recurrence is called LaoFu (Labor Relapse); sexual activity leading to transmission is called YinYangYi (Yin-Yang Exchange).
This condition is difficult to treat; many have died with tongues protruding several inches. This decoction is extremely effective.
Renshen (Panax Ginseng Root), ZhiMu (Anemarrhena Asphodeloides Rhizome), Zhuqing (Bamboo Leaf), Chaihu (Bupleurum Root), Huanglian (Coptis Chinensis Rhizome), Gancao (Glycyrrhiza Uralensis Root), Huashi (Talcum), Shengdi (Rehmannia Glutinosa Root Prepared by Steaming), Huang Xijiao (Rhinoceros Horn - *Note: Substitute with Buffalo Horn in modern practice*), Jiubaijigen (Allium Tuberosum White Part and Root) (equal parts).
Use two cups of water, three slices of Shengjiang (Zingiber Officinale Rhizome), and two dates. Decoct to eight-tenths volume. Add 1 qian of SuiJin (Hair Charcoal) to mix and take orally. The appearance of sticky sweat indicates efficacy.
Item 292. Zaizao Powder (Regeneration Powder) Treats Shanghan (Cold Damage) presenting with headache, fever, aversion to cold, and anhidrosis (absence of sweating). When diaphoretic medicines taken for two or three doses fail to induce sweat, physicians who do not recognize this syndrome may ignore seasonal conditions and reuse heavy diaphoretics like Mahuang (Ephedra Herba), or employ fire therapy to force sweating, often resulting in fatal errors. It is unknown that this is due to Yang deficiency failing to generate sweat, hence named "WuYang" (No Yang).
Renshen (Panax Ginseng Root), Huangqi (Astragalus Membranaceus Root), Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig), Gancao (Glycyrrhiza Uralensis Root), Shu Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Lateral Root), Xixin (Asarum Root), Qianghuo (Notopterygium Root), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), Wei Shengjiang (Roasted Ginger). In summer, add Huangqin (Scutellaria Baicalensis Root) and Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum).
Use two cups of water and two dates. Decoct to one cup. Take warm.
Item 293. Huanglong Decoction (Yellow Dragon Decoction) Presents with hardness and pain in the epigastrium, diarrhea of pure clear water, delirium, thirst, and fever. Physicians unfamiliar with this syndrome may call it Loudi Shanghan (Leaky Bottom Cold Damage) and immediately use hot medicines to stop diarrhea, which is like adding fuel to the fire, causing much harm. It is unknown that this is caused by heat pathogen transmitting inward, resulting in dry fecal impaction in the stomach. This diarrhea is not due to interior cold but is termed "Li after taking herbal medicine," known as JiRe Li (Accumulated Heat Diarrhea). It requires urgent purgation. Use this decoction if there is fever; if there is no fever, use Jian LiuYi ShunQi Tang (Decoction of LiuYi Regulating Qi).
Dahuang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome), Mangxiao (Mirabilite) (omit for elderly and weak patients); Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange), Nongpu (Magnolia Bark), Gancao (Glycyrrhiza Uralensis Root), Renshen (Panax Ginseng Root), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root).
Use one and a half cups of water, three slices of Shengjiang (Zingiber Officinale Rhizome), and two dates. Decoct and take orally.
Item 294. Qinlian Xiaodu Yin (Scutellaria and Coptis Detoxification Drink) Treats epidemic febrile diseases (Tianxing ShiYi) presenting with severe headache, fever, aversion to cold, neck swelling, surging pulse, and phlegm obstruction. This formula treats these symptoms.
Chaihu (Bupleurum Root), Gancao (Glycyrrhiza Uralensis Root), Jiegeng (Platycodon Grandiflorus Root), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), Huangqin (Scutellaria Baicalensis Root), Jingjie (Schizonepeta Spike), Huanglian (Coptis Chinensis Rhizome), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Qianghuo (Notopterygium Root), Zhiqiao (Aurantii Fructus), Lianqiao (Forsythia Fruit), Shegan (Belamcanda Rhizome), Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica Root).
First, decoct Dahuang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome) to induce bowel movements two or three times. Then, according to this base formula, remove Dahuang and add Renshen (Panax Ginseng Root) and Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root) for regulation. Use two cups of water and three slices of Shengjiang (Zingiber Officinale Rhizome) to decoct. For those with phlegm, add Zhuli (Bamboo Sap) and Jiangzhi (Ginger Juice) to mix.
Item 295. Liushen Tongsheng San (Six Miracles Universal Victory Powder) Treats epidemic febrile disease occurring after three months, known as WanFa (Late Onset), presenting with headache, body heat, aversion to cold, and surging rapid pulse. First use Qianghuo Chonghe Tang (Notopterygium Harmony Decoction); if ineffective, then take this powder.
Mahuang (Ephedra Herba), Gancao (Glycyrrhiza Uralensis Root), Huangqin (Scutellaria Baicalensis Root), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) (each 1 qian); Huashi (Talcum) (1.5 qian); Cangzhu (Atractylodes Lancea Rhizome), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), Qianghuo (Notopterygium Root), Xixin (Asarum Root) (each 5 fen).
Use two cups of water, three slices of Shengjiang (Zingiber Officinale Rhizome), a pinch of ChiDou (Fermented Soybean), and one cun of Congbai (Scallion White). Decoct to eight-tenths volume and take orally. Induce sweating; stop when the illness resolves.
Item 296. Qi Jian (Vital Energy Transmission) When entering a sickroom, one must avoid the pathogenic qi to prevent infection, which is the best approach. This is a hazard in treating patients and must not be ignored; thus, formulas are appended below.
Xionghuang Wan (Realgar Pill)
Xionghuang (Realgar) (1 liang); Danshen (Salvia Miltiorrhiza Root), Guijianyu (Cornus Swinhoei Branch), Chixiaodou (Vigna Umbellata Seed, stir-fried) (each 2 liang).
Grind all into fine powder. Prepare pills with refined honey, sized like paulownia seeds. Take five pills on an empty stomach with warm water. Even if sharing a bed and blanket with the patient, one will not become infected.
Another method: Apply Xionghuang powder inside the nostrils. Enter the room calmly. Pathogenic qi from male patients exits through the mouth, while from female patients it exits through the vaginal opening. During sitting or standing face-to-face, one must be aware of their orientation relative to oneself.
