医者所谓人须、发、眉，虽皆毛类，而所主五脏各异。故有老而须白，眉发不白者，或发白，而须
眉不白者，脏气有所偏故也。大率发属心，禀火气，故上生；须属肾，禀水气，故下生，眉属肝，
禀木气，故侧生。男子肾气外行，上为须，下为势，故女人、宦人无势，则亦无须，而眉发无异于男子，
则知不属肾也明矣。
方
天下乌须第一方（高阁老传）
五倍子（不拘多少，捶碎，去灰，入砂锅内，炒尽烟为度，以青布巾打湿，扭干，
包裹，脚 成饼，为末听用。每用一钱半） 乌黑霜（即炒黄好细面四两，当归尾一两为
末，白芨末一两，三味搅匀。每用一分半） 红铜末（不拘多少，火内烧极红，投入水碗
中，取出再烧，再投，取其水内自然之末，用水淘净，将好醋煮数沸至干，随炒黑色所
用。每用一分半） 明矾末（一分半） 青盐（一分二厘） 没石子（二厘半） 诃子（二厘
半，二味俱用面包，入砂锅内，将柴炭同拌，炒至焦干）
上用细茶卤调如糊，瓷器内重汤煮，洗净搽上，干了洗去。
京师秘传乌须方
五倍子（制法如前，每用二钱） 红铜末（制法如前，每用六分） 食盐（三分） 明
矾末（六分） 白灰面（一分半）
上合火酒调搽，无酒浓茶亦可，调匀，以酒盏盛贮。用铁杓注
水，煮至如糖香镜脸，方可取用。先将皂角水洗净须发，然后涂药，包裹一夜，次早洗去即黑，如须少只用半张。
旱莲膏（马翰林传） 乌须黑发神方。
旱莲草十六斤，在六月下半月、七月上半月采十六斤，不许水洗，扭干取汁，对日晒过五日，不住手搅一
午时，方加真生姜汁一斤，蜜一斤，和汁同前晒，搅至数日，似稀糖成膏，瓷碗收藏。每
日空心，用无灰好酒一钟，药一匙服，午后又一服，至二十一日，将白须发拔去，即长出黑须发。
神仙乌云丹（吴侍郎传） 乌须黑发，返老还童，壮筋骨，补真精，固元阳，神效无比。
何首乌（半斤，入砂锅内，以黑豆同蒸半日，去豆，用好酒浸一七，晒干再蒸、浸
七次） 破故纸（酒洗，一斤，砂锅内炒黄色） 旱莲汁（二两，如无汁，旱莲为末亦可
）槐角子（二两，为末） 梧桐泪（即木律，为末，二两）
上共一处为细末，枣肉二斤，核桃仁半斤，共为处捣为丸，如
梧桐子大。每服五十丸，空心盐汤下，服三个月勿断一日。
旱莲丸（王史目传） 乌须黑发，服一月，已白者退，再生者黑，其效如神，士大夫不可一日无此药。

五煎膏（刘太府传） 乌须发，固牙齿，壮筋骨。
旱莲汁 黑桑椹 何首乌 生地黄 白茯苓
上五味各自为咀片，煎汁，滤净渣，熬成膏，合一处和匀，置瓷器内封固，埋土七日。每服二三匙，一日三服。
一醉不老丹（刘佥宪） 专养血化痰，乌须黑发，男女皆可服。
莲花蕊 生地黄 槐角子 五加皮（各三两） 没石子（六个，三阴三阳）
上将药用木石臼捣碎，以生绢袋盛药，用无灰好酒十斤，入不渗坛内，春冬浸一月，秋二十日，夏十日，
紧封坛口，浸满日，任意服之，以醉为度。须连日服尽，久则恐味变也。酒尽而须发白者
自黑，若未黑，再制，服不过三两次，神效。
蒲公散（刘小亭传） 乌须生发。
蒲公英（净，四两，炒） 血余（洗净，四两） 青盐（四两，研）
上用瓷罐一个，盛蒲公英一层，血余一层，青盐一层，盐泥封固，淹春秋五日，夏三日，冬七日，桑
柴火 ，令烟尽为度，候冷取出，碾为末。每服一钱，清晨酒调服。
三仙丸（贺兰峰传） 治头发脱落，神效。
侧柏叶（八两，焙干） 当归（全身，四两）
上忌铁器，为末，水糊为丸，如梧桐子大。每服五七十丸，早晚各一服，黄酒、盐汤任下。
生头发方
大附子一个，要一两重者佳，为末，用乌骨黑鸡一只，取其油搅药末擦头，其发即生。
医者所说的胡须、头发和眉毛，虽然都属于毛发的类别，但分别由五脏中的不同脏腑所主宰。因此，有的人年老时胡须变白，而眉毛和头发却不白；或者头发变白，而胡须和眉毛不白，这是因为脏腑之气有所偏盛或偏衰的缘故。大体而言，头发归属于心，禀受火气，所以向上生长；胡须归属于肾，禀受水气，所以向下生长；眉毛归属于肝，禀受木气，所以向侧面生长。男子的肾气向外运行，上行表现为胡须，下行表现为生殖器（势），所以女性和宦官没有生殖器，也就没有胡须，而他们的眉毛和头发与男子无异，这就清楚地知道胡须不属于肾所主了。
方剂部分：
天下乌须第一方（由高阁老传授）
五倍子（数量不限，捣碎，去除灰尘，放入砂锅中，炒至无烟为止，用青布巾打湿后拧干，包裹成饼状，研成粉末备用。每次使用一钱半） 乌黑霜（即炒好的黄细面四两，当归尾一两研成粉末，白芨末一两，将这三味药搅拌均匀。每次使用一分半） 红铜末（数量不限，在火中烧至极红，投入水碗中，取出再烧，再投入，取其在水中自然沉淀的粉末，用水淘洗干净，用好醋煮数沸至干，随炒黑色所用。每次使用一分半） 明矾末（一分半） 青盐（一分二厘） 没石子（二厘半） 诃子（二厘半，这两味药都用面包裹，放入砂锅内，用柴炭同拌，炒至焦干）
以上药物用浓茶汁调成糊状，在瓷器内隔水加热煮沸，洗净患处后涂抹，干了之后洗去。
京师秘传乌须方
五倍子（制法同上，每次使用二钱） 红铜末（制法同上，每次使用六分） 食盐（三分） 明矾末（六分） 白灰面（一分半）
以上药物混合后用火酒调匀涂抹，若无酒，浓茶也可，调匀后以酒盏盛放。用铁勺注入水，煮至如糖稀般粘稠且镜面光亮时，方可取用。先用皂角水洗净胡须和头发，然后涂药，包裹一夜，次日早晨洗去即变黑，若胡须较少只需半张用量。
旱莲膏（由马翰林传授） 乌须黑发神方。
旱莲草十六斤，在六月下半月和七月上半月采集十六斤，不许水洗，拧干取汁，对着日晒五日，不停地搅拌一个午时，然后加入真生姜汁一斤，蜂蜜一斤，混合汁液继续按前述方法日晒，搅拌数日，直至变成稀糖状的膏体，收藏于瓷碗中。每天空腹时，用好酒一杯，药一匙服用，午后再服一次，到第二十天，将白色的胡须和头发拔掉，长出来的就是黑色的胡须和头发。

何首乌（半斤，放入砂锅内，与黑豆同蒸半天，去掉豆子，用好酒浸泡七天，晒干后再蒸、再泡，共七次） 破故纸（酒洗，一斤，砂锅内炒至黄色） 旱莲汁（二两，若无汁，旱莲草研末亦可） 槐角子（二两，研末） 梧桐泪（即木律，研末，二两）
以上药物混合研成细末，枣肉二斤，核桃仁半斤，共同捣烂制成丸药，如梧桐子大小。每次服用五十丸，空腹时用盐汤送下，连续服用三个月，不可中断一天。
旱莲丸（由王史目传授） 乌须黑发，服用一个月，已白的头发会变退，新长出的头发变黑，效果如神，士大夫不可一日无此药。
旱莲汁（晒至半斤） 生姜（三斤，取汁晒至半斤） 生地黄（二斤，酒泡去汁，晒至半斤） 细辛（一两） 破故纸（一斤，面炒） 杜仲（半斤，炒） 五加皮（半斤，酒浸） 赤茯苓（半斤，乳汁浸） 枸杞子（四两） 川芎（四两） 没石子（二两）
以上药物研成粉末，核桃仁去皮半斤，与枣肉混合制成丸药，如梧桐子大小。每次服用五十丸，用黄酒送下。
五煎膏（由刘太府传授） 乌须发，固牙齿，壮筋骨。
旱莲汁 黑桑椹 何首乌 生地黄 白茯苓
以上五味药各自切成饮片，煎煮取汁，滤净药渣，熬成膏状，混合均匀，置于瓷器内密封，埋入土中七日。每次服用二三匙，每日三次。
一醉不老丹（刘佥宪传授） 专养血化痰，乌须黑发，男女皆可服用。
莲花蕊 生地黄 槐角子 五加皮（各三两） 没石子（六个，三阴三阳）
以上药物用木石臼捣碎，装入生绢袋中，用无灰好酒十斤，放入不漏的坛内，春冬季浸泡一个月，秋季二十天，夏季十天，紧封坛口，浸泡满日后，任意服用，以喝醉为度。必须连日服完，久了恐怕味道会变质。酒喝完而胡须头发变白的自然会变黑，若未变黑，再制作，服用不超过两三次，神效。
蒲公散（由刘小亭传授） 乌须生发。
蒲公英（净，四两，炒） 血余（洗净，四两） 青盐（四两，研）
以上药物用一个瓷罐，一层蒲公英，一层血余，一层青盐，用盐泥封口，淹制春秋五日，夏季三日，冬季七日，用桑柴火，令烟尽为止，冷却后取出，碾成粉末。每次服用一钱，清晨用酒调服。
三仙丸（由贺兰峰传授） 治疗头发脱落，神效。
侧柏叶（八两，焙干） 当归（全株，四两）
以上药物忌用铁器，研成粉末，用水糊制成丸药，如梧桐子大小。每次服用五七十丸，早晚各一次，黄酒、盐汤任送下。
The beard, hair, and eyebrows mentioned by physicians, although all belonging to the category of hair, are governed by different Zang organs. Therefore, some people have white beards in old age while their eyebrows and hair remain black, or their hair turns white while their beard and eyebrows do not; this is due to the bias in the Qi of the Zang organs. Generally speaking, hair belongs to the Heart (Xin), receiving Fire Qi, thus growing upwards; the beard belongs to the Kidney (Shen), receiving Water Qi, thus growing downwards; eyebrows belong to the Liver (Gan), receiving Wood Qi, thus growing sideways. In men, Kidney Qi flows outward, manifesting as a beard above and genitalia (Shi) below. Thus, women and eunuchs, lacking genitalia, also lack beards, while their eyebrows and hair are no different from men's. This clearly indicates that the beard does not belong to the Kidney.
Formulas:
The First Formula for Blackening Hair Worldwide (Transmitted by Elder Gao)
Myrobalan (Wubeizi, 五倍子) (Any amount, crushed, ash removed, stir-fried in a clay pot until smoke ceases, wrapped in a damp green cloth, squeezed dry, formed into a cake, and ground into powder for use. Use 1.5 qian per application.) Wumei Shuang (Blackening Frost) (Consists of 4 liang of well-stir-fried fine yellow flour, 1 liang of Danggui Wei (Angelica Sinensis Tail) powder, and 1 liang of Baiji (Bletilla Striata) powder, mixed evenly. Use 0.15 fen per application.) Hongtong Mo (Red Copper Powder) (Any amount, heated in fire until extremely red, dipped in water, repeated to collect natural sediment, washed clean, boiled in good vinegar until dry, then stir-fried until black. Use 0.15 fen per application.) Mingfan (Alumen, Alum) powder (0.15 fen) Qingyan (Green Salt) (0.12 liang) Moshizi (Tannic Acid Stone/Gallnut) (0.25 liang) Hezi (Terminalia Chebula) (0.25 liang, both Moshizi and Hezi wrapped in dough, stir-fried with charcoal until scorched and dry).
Mix the above ingredients with strong tea decoction into a paste, boil in a porcelain vessel over water, wash the area clean, apply, and wash off when dry.
Secret Capital Formula for Blackening Hair
Wubeizi (Preparation as above, use 2 qian) Hongtong Mo (Preparation as above, use 6 fen) Yanshi (Salt) (3 fen) Mingfan (Alumen) powder (6 fen) Baohui Mian (White Ash Flour) (0.15 fen).
Mix the above with Huojiu (Fire Wine/Liquor) for application. If wine is unavailable, strong tea may be used. Mix well and store in a wine cup. Add water with an iron spoon and boil until thick like syrup and shiny like a mirror. Wash beard and hair with Sijiao (Gleditsia Sinensis) water first, then apply medicine, wrap overnight, and wash off the next morning to turn black. Use half the amount if the beard is sparse.
Hanlian Gao (Eclipta Paste) (Transmitted by Hanlin Ma) A divine formula for blackening hair.
Hanliancao (Eclipta Prostrata) 16 jin, harvested in the latter half of the sixth lunar month and the first half of the seventh lunar month. Do not wash with water; wring out and extract juice. Sun-dry for five days, stirring continuously for one Wushi (noon period). Then add 1 jin of fresh Ginger Juice and 1 jin of Honey. Continue sun-drying and stirring for several days until it resembles thin sugar paste. Store in a porcelain bowl. Take one spoonful with a cup of pure wine on an empty stomach daily, and another dose in the afternoon. After twenty-one days, pluck out white hairs, and new black hairs will grow.
Shenxian Wuyun Dan (Immortal Dark Cloud Pill) (Transmitted by Langzhong Wu) Blackens hair, reverses aging, strengthens sinews and bones, tonifies true essence, secures primal Yang, with unparalleled efficacy.
Heshouwu (Polygonum Multiflorum) (0.5 jin, steamed with Heidou (Black Soybean) in a clay pot for half a day, remove beans, soak in good wine for seven days, dry, steam, and soak again, repeating seven times) Poguzhi (Cibotium Barometz/Achyranthis Bidentata? Note: Traditionally Cibotium, but often Achyranthus in hair formulas. WHO term: Semen Cibotii or Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae. Here likely Semen Cibotii based on context "Po Gu Zi") (Jiu Xi, 1 jin, stir-fried in clay pot until yellow) Hanlian Zhi (Eclipta Juice) (2 liang, if juice unavailable, Hanlian powder may be used) Huaiguoz (Sophora Fruit) (2 liang, powdered) Wutong Lei (Tallow Tree Resin/Mu Lv) (Powdered, 2 liang).
Grind all into fine powder. Mix with 2 jin of Jujube Flesh and 0.5 jin of Walnut Kernel. Pounded into pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take 50 pills each time on an empty stomach with salt water. Take continuously for three months without missing a day.
Hanlian Wan (Eclipta Pill) (Transmitted by Wang Shimu) Blackens hair. After one month of use, white hair recedes and new growth is black. Efficacy is miraculous; scholars should not be without this medicine.
Hanlian Zhi (Sun-dried to 0.5 jin) Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) (3 jin, juice extracted and sun-dried to 0.5 jin) Shengdihuang (Rehmannia Root) (2 jin, soaked in wine, juice removed, sun-dried to 0.5 jin) Xixin (Asarum) (1 liang) Poguzi (1 jin, stir-fried with flour) Duzhong (Eucommia Bark) (0.5 jin, stir-fried) Wujia Pi (Acanthopanacis Cortex) (0.5 jin, soaked in wine) Chifuling (Red Poria) (0.5 jin, soaked in milk) Gouqizi (Goji Berry) (4 liang) Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong) (4 liang) Moshizi (2 liang).
Grind into powder. Mix with peeled Walnut Kernels (0.5 jin) and Jujube Flesh. Form into pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take 50 pills each time with yellow wine.
Wujian Gao (Five-Decoction Paste) (Transmitted by Taifu Liu) Blackens hair, strengthens teeth, and reinforces sinews and bones.
Hanlian Zhi (Eclipta Juice) Heishanshen (Black Mulberry Fruit) Heshouwu (Polygonum Multiflorum) Shengdihuang (Rehmannia Root) Baifuling (White Poria).
Cut the above five herbs into slices, decoct separately, filter residues, and boil down into pastes. Mix uniformly, seal in porcelain, and bury in soil for seven days. Take 2-3 spoons each time, three times daily.
Yizui Bulao Dan (One-Drunken Immortality Pill) (Transmitted by Qianxian Liu) Specifically nourishes Blood, resolves Phlegm, blackens hair. Suitable for both men and women.
Lianhua Rui (Lotus Stamen) Shengdihuang (Rehmannia Root) Huaiguoz (Sophora Fruit) Wujia Pi (Acanthopanacis Cortex) (Each 3 liang) Moshizi (6 pieces, Yin-Yang balance).
Crush the above herbs in a wooden or stone mortar, place in a raw silk bag. Soak in 10 jin of pure wine in a non-leaking jar. Soak for one month in Spring/Winter, 20 days in Autumn, 10 days in Summer. Seal tightly. After full soaking, drink at will until drunk. Finish drinking within consecutive days to prevent spoilage. White hair/beard will turn black after consumption. If not black, prepare again. No more than two or three courses needed for miraculous effect.
Pugong San (Dandelion Powder) (Transmitted by Xiaoting Liu) Blackens hair and promotes growth.
Pugongying (Taraxacum) (Cleaned, 4 liang, stir-fried) Xueyu (Scorched Human Hair) (Cleaned, 4 liang) Qingyan (Green Salt) (4 liang, ground).
Layer Pugongying, Xueyu, and Qingyan in a porcelain jar. Seal with salt mud. Ferment for 5 days in Spring/Autumn, 3 days in Summer, 7 days in Winter. Roast over Mulberry wood fire until smoke ceases. Cool, grind into powder. Take 1 qian each time, mixed with wine in the early morning.
Sanxian Wan (Three-Immortal Pill) (Transmitted by Helan Feng) Treats hair loss with miraculous efficacy.
Cebaiye (Platycladi Cacumen) (8 liang, dried by baking) Danggui (Angelica Sinensis) (Whole plant, 4 liang).
Avoid iron utensils. Grind into powder, bind with water paste into pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take 50-70 pills each time, morning and evening, with yellow wine or salt water.
Formula for Growing Hair
Fuzi (Aconite Lateralis Radix Praeparata) One large piece, preferably weighing 1 liang, ground into powder. Use oil from one Black-bone Hen (Wugu Ji) to mix with the powder and rub onto the scalp. Hair will grow.
