Regarding this disease, no one has ever known that there is a distinction between Yin and Yang syndromes in this condition, nor that there are differences in treatment methods between cold and heat patterns, thereby correcting their merits and faults. This is why this disease is difficult to treat, and why physicians find it hard to practice effectively.
Now, Lianquan harbored doubts upon seeing Rhizoma Zingiberis Preparatum (Jiang, 干姜) and Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata (Fuzi, 附子), while Anbo observed that the pathogenesis had already shifted. Therefore, [Mengying] prescribed: Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma Koreanensis (Chaoxian Shen, 朝鲜参), Ophiopogonis Radix (Maidong, 麦冬), Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu, 知母), Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma (Weirui, 葳蕤), Chaenomelis Fructus (Mu Gua, 木瓜), Coicis Semen (Bian Dou, 扁豆 - *Note: Bian Dou usually refers to Lablab Seed, but contextually often grouped with dampness-resolving herbs; here kept as literal translation of name*), Dendrobii Caulis (Shihu, 石斛), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao, 白芍), Coicis Semen (Yiren, 薏苡仁), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草), Poria (Fuling, 茯苓). After taking six doses, the patient could finally speak and move, gradually resuming diet, and recovered health after more than a month of conditioning. This is the treatment method for cases where residual heat remains unclarified and righteous Qi is severely deficient. There are also cases where residual flames reignite not due to deficiency, which require treatment with Lian Xiong Dan (Refined Realgar Pill).
Zhan Yaotang’s son, aged twenty, suffered from Huoluan (Cholera-like syndrome). After taking several doses of Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens (Jiang, 干姜) and Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guizhi, 肉桂), diarrhea persisted. He habitually smoked opium, so his family suspected a deficiency-type leakage syndrome. Upon administering tonifying treatments, the diarrhea worsened significantly. Mengying examined him and noted intense thirst and a wiry, rapid pulse. He reasoned that although the onset was not caused by summer-heat, the patient’s Yin aspect had been chronically deficient. Although he indulged in cold drinks and cooling behaviors, how could hot-natured medicines be overdosed? If not for the diarrhea diverting the medicinal force, the body fluids would have long since dried up! Thus, he prescribed Baitouweng Tang (Pulsatilla Decoction) combined with Fengsui Dan (Seal the Marrow Pill), plus Flos Lonicerae Japonicae (Yinjinhua, 银花), Phaseoli Radiatus Semen (Lvdou, 绿豆), and Dendrobii Caulis (Shihu, 石斛). Symptoms improved after one dose and resolved after two doses.
Jiang Jingtang’s mother, aged seventy-four, suddenly developed vomiting and diarrhea, accompanied by fever, abdominal pain, and unclear mental state. Mengying diagnosed her pulse as weak and rapid. He stated: The pulse of summer-heat naturally tends toward deficiency; one should not fear collapse solely because the patient is elderly. However, acrid and dispersing Sha medicines (for wind-heat/toxin clearing) inevitably consume body fluids. Therefore, he determined the prescription to include: Radix Scutellariae (Huangqin, 黄芩), Rhizoma Coptidis (Huanglian, 黄连), Talcum (Huashi, 滑石), Dendrobii Caulis (Shihu, 石斛), Caulis Bambusae in Taeniam (Zhuru, 竹茹), Radix Astragali Membranacei (Huangqi, 黄芪)...
