A Chen family child presented with fever and limb convulsions. The pediatrician administered medicines for "Jing Feng" (infantile convulsion), resulting in coma, shortness of breath, sweating, and anuria. Mengying examined the patient and said, "This is due to Summerheat." He ordered banana leaves to be spread on the mud ground for the child to lie upon. He prescribed Chen Sha Liu Yi San (Cinnabar Six-One Powder) added with Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Xiyangshen (American Ginseng), Zhuye (Bambusae Folium), and Hehua Lu (Lotus Flower Dew). After one dose, the condition improved significantly.
Subsequently, a Hu family girl presented with similar symptoms. The pediatrician declared it incurable, so she sought help from Mengying, who also cured her using the same method.
Qiao Younan's nephew, just five years old, had suffered from fever for several days. A physician administered Chai Ge Jie Ji Tang (Bupleurum and Pueraria Decoction to Release the Muscle Layer) for one dose, after which the child developed limb convulsions and cold extremities, with eyes open but unable to speak. His mother was a widow with only this single heir. She sought treatment everywhere without any effect. His relative, Xu Hefu, entrusted Wang Shoushi to find an elder specialist in pediatrics. Wang Shoushi said, "You should seek a physician skilled in treating external contractions. Although patients differ in age, the principles of disease are the same. Do not abandon Da Fang Mai (Internal Medicine/Pulse Diagnosis) to trust specialized departments; this is the golden needle secret from Yu Jiayan's *Huoyou Xinshu* (Golden Needle for Curing Children)." Why not invite Mengying to examine him? Xu Hefu followed this advice. Mengying said, "The disease is caused by Summerheat pathogen, yet wind-dispelling medicines were used. Heat becomes fierce when aided by wind medicines, and body fluids boil under the scorching effect of wind. Thus, wind medicines triggered Liver Wind. Administering common 'Jing Feng' formulas further endangered the child, whose root essence is fragile. With the violent wind unextinguished, there is cause for concern regarding collapse." He prescribed Wang Shi Xi Jiao Di Huang Tang (Wang's Rhinoceros Horn and Rehmannia Decoction) added with Lingyangjiao (Saiga Antelope Horn), Sheng Shigao (Raw Gypsum Fibrosum), Yuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), Sang Ye (Mori Folium), Ju Hua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Yin Hua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos), Muli (Ostreae Concha), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), and Zhuye (Bambusae Folium). After several doses, the child recovered.
Chen Heguan suffered from abdominal distension due to Pi Ji (accumulation masses), fever, dry cough, good appetite but yellowish emaciation, loose stools, and dark urine. Extensive use of pediatric medicines yielded no results, leading to despair. Hearing of this, Mengying felt pity and said, "Although I have not specifically studied pediatrics, I will tentatively prescribe a formula; perhaps there is still hope." He prescribed Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Muli (Ostreae Concha), Biejia (Trionycis Carapax et Plastrum), Jizhoupi (Galli Gigerii Endothelium Corneum), Mugua (Chaenomelis Fructus), Shanzha (Crataegi Fructus), Lianshi (Meliae Fructus), Jupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Xia Tian Qu (Xia Tian Qu), Xuan Fu (Inulae Flos), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Danpi (Moutan Cortex), and Wu Gu Chong (Nephertis Insecta). After one dose, improvement was noted, and within ten-plus days, he recovered.
