A young woman was in labor. Her amniotic sac ruptured prematurely, and the fetus was dry and could not be delivered. This is commonly known as "Li Sheng" (difficult birth due to premature rupture of membranes). Various parturition-inducing medicines were tried without success. Wang Mengying instructed them to buy one or two jin (approx. 500-1000g) of fresh pork, wash it clean, cut it into large chunks, and boil it rapidly over high heat to make a soup. After skimming off the floating oil, the patient was allowed to drink it freely. She delivered immediately, and both mother and child survived. He also stated: Pigs are water-dwelling animals; their meat is rich and nourishing, greatly tonifying Kidney Yin and generating body fluids. I have used it to treat Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst syndrome) caused by depletion of Kidney Water, and asthma/cough due to Yin deficiency with Yang hyperactivity, achieving miraculous effects. Zhang Zhongjing used Zhu Fu (Pig Skin) to treat Shaoyin throat pain, precisely for its ability to nourish Yin deficiency and subdue floating Yang. Later physicians failed to investigate this carefully and instead claimed it was a toxic substance. Wang Ang refuted this, which was correct. However, it should not be consumed by those recovering from exogenous pathogens, nor by those with deficiency-cold diarrhea or phlegm-dampness syndromes arising from excessive dampness. Its cloying and greasy nature is even more pronounced than that of Ejiao (Donkey-Hide Gelatin), Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), and Long Yan Rou (Longan Aril). Pork from Zhejiang is of good quality, whereas northern pigs are unsuitable for use. The "Zao Rou" (Dried Meat) produced in our Hangzhou is made from pig skin, making it easy to transport over long distances and particularly convenient for medicinal use. One need not pedantically stick to the literal characters "Pi" (Skin) and "Fu" (Surface/Skin) to boast about textual research.
Wang Mengying further said: In the past, my old friend Fan Qingzan told Qian Xiong: "Nothing quenches thirst better than pork soup." Whenever silver smelters in government workshops worked during the intense summer heat—when counties were casting silver for tax remittances—the silver furnaces were highest, and the firelight shone directly on their faces. Therefore, only those with sufficient Qi and Blood could endure this profession. However, when the human body is scorched by fire, thirst becomes unbearable and cannot be relieved by tea alone. They must consume pork: boiled rapidly over high heat to extract a clear broth, skimmed of floating oil, stored in jars to cool, and drunk as tea. Upon hearing this, Qian Xiong realized: "This thirst is caused by fire scorching body fluids; it cannot be resolved by tea." Pigs are water animals, their meat is rich, and their function is specifically to replenish water and save fluids. Indeed, they cannot be compared to fruits and melons. Extending this logic to conditions such as deficiency-type asthma, deficiency-type constipation, lower jiao damage, and difficult birth where fluid deficiency is present, every application yielded immediate results. Thus, it became known that pork is a wonderful product for nourishing Yin.
Huang Xiuyuan, a physician at the bureau, had a friend surnamed Han named Mingliang. His daughter-in-law suffered from a febrile disease while pregnant. All physicians at the bureau feared fetal loss and uniformly prescribed blood-tonifying formulas. Ten days later, her condition became critical. The family sought Wang Mengying's consultation. He said: "The fetus has already decomposed. It is advisable to urgently purge it; there may be a chance of survival. If you wish to preserve the fetus, I do not know how to help." The family earnestly requested a prescription. He therefore administered Tiao Wei Cheng Qi Tang (Regulate the Stomach and Purge the Intestines Decoction) combined with Xi Jiao Di Huang Tang (Rhinoceros Horn and Rehmannia Decoction), adding Xi Yang Shen (American Ginseng), Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhena Rhizome), Shi Hu (Dendrobium Stem), and Niu Xi (Achyranthes Root). The fetus was expelled and was indeed putrid. However, the patient's spirit cleared immediately, and the fever gradually subsided. Subsequently, he prescribed a formula containing Xi Yang Shen, Xuan Shen (Scrophularia Root), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmannia Root), Zhi Mu, Mai Dong, Dan Shen (Salvia Root), Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex), Fu Ling (Poria), Shan Zha (Hawthorn Fruit), Shi Hu, Dou Juan (Sojae Semen Praeparatum), Chong Wei Zi (Vernonia Seed), and Hu Po (Amber) to regulate her condition. Her intake of congee increased daily, and she recovered within ten days.
