In the summer of Jiashen, while I was using the toilet, my body suddenly became cold with profuse cold sweat, and my qi was weak and spirit exhausted. Wang Mengying examined me and said, "This is a sign that yang qi is about to collapse." The situation was urgent, leaving no time to prepare medicine. Fortunately, there was a piece of ginger worn by a three-year-old girl who had not yet been weaned, weighing approximately four to five qian. It was hastily decocted and administered orally, after which I immediately felt better. Later, tonic medicines were used for recovery, primarily consisting of Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Zhizhushu (Roasted Atractylodis Rhizoma), and Gancao (Licorice Root), because the qi aspect was predominantly deficient.
Zheng Jiu was treated by Dr. Chen Liushun from Zhejiang. After taking the medicine, he sweated, became delirious and manic, and his essence flowed out with signs of collapse. Wang Mengying palpated his pulse, finding it scattered and chaotic, extremely fine upon deep pressure. He said, "This condition is quite critical; only a thread of vitality remains. This person's yin aspect has been inherently deficient, so one cannot blame Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig) and Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root) entirely for this outcome." The prescription included: Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis), Baihe (Lilii Bulbus), Gancao (Licorice Root), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Sangzhi (Mori Ramulus), Longgu (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi et Scapulae), Muli (Concha Ostreae), and Douchi (Fermented Soybean) stir-fried in salt water. A large dose was administered, and peace returned as soon as the medicine was swallowed. The next day, Zhizi, Douchi, and Gancao were removed, and Guiban (Carapax Testudinis) and Biejia (Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis) and Ju Hong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) stir-fried in salt water were added. After more than ten doses, he recovered.
An elderly woman, over sixty years old, suffered from wandering pain in her waist and legs. Upon hearing a noise, her leg tendons would spasm unbearably, requiring twenty or thirty spasms to subside. She had been bedridden for several years with no effect from various medicines. Wang Mengying observed her pulse as deep and wiry, tongue coating greasy, and constipation. The illness was exacerbated by extensive use of warming and tonifying medicines. The prescription given was: Xue Geng (a formula of Calcaria Haliae and Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma), Lingyangjiao (Saigae Tataricae Cornu), Lianshi (Meliae Fructus), Danning (Arisaematis Cum Bile), Juluo (Tomentosus Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Retinervia), Zhuli (Bambusae Succus), Sigualuo (Luffae Fructus Retinervia). She took Qingshi Guntan Wan (Magnoliae Bark and Magnetite Pill) and Danggui Longhui Wan (Angelica Sinensis and Gardenia Pill). After four doses, she had severe diarrhea dozens of times, with excrement that was foul-smelling and tough. The tendon spasms ceased immediately. The two pills were then discontinued, and Shan Zhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), and Huoxiang (Agastaches Herba) were added. After six doses, she could eat normally and walk with support.
Another elderly woman suffered from lower back pain with a distending sensation, feeling the need to punch the area. Various medicines were ineffective. Wang Mengying noted that although her physique was emaciated, her pulse was slippery with much phlegm, tongue coating yellow, and tongue body crimson. He said, "The constitution is deficient, but the disease is excess; warming and tonifying are inappropriate. If the phlegm is not attacked and expelled, merely delaying with mild tonics will make the disease more excessive and the constitution more deficient. Wasting money and resources, nurturing the 'bandit' (pathogen), is not the way to treat disease." First, Xue Geng Tang (Decoction) was given with Zhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam), Lianshi (Meliae Fructus), Lvemei (Plum Flower), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix), Ju Hong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Fuling (Poria), and Xin Yi (Bupleuri Radix - *Note: Text says 旋复, likely Xin Yi or Xuan Fu Hua, context suggests resolving phlegm/qi, Xuan Fu Hua fits better with phlegm, but text says 旋复 which usually refers to Inulae Flos/Xuan Fuhua*). She swallowed Kong Dan Dan (Emetic Pill for Phlegm). As expected, sticky phlegm was discharged. After three doses, the illness seemed to vanish. Subsequently, regulatory and tonifying medicines were given, leading to full recovery.
Wang Binghua, a broker, suffered from arm pain in summer. Dr. Sun diagnosed it as wind. After several doses of Renshen (Ginseng Radix), [missing character], Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), and Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), the arm pain slightly improved but epigastric pain appeared. Dr. Sun then diagnosed cold and added Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) and Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root). The pain did not stop, and phlegm increased. Dr. Sun then diagnosed liver and kidney deficiency, heavily using Shudi (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix) and Gouqi (Lycii Fructus), advising prolonged use for effect. Unexpectedly, the condition worsened with continued use, eventually leading to fainting. Dr. Sun still believed the medicinal power had not reached its peak due to chronic deficiency, increasing the dosage further, causing frequent fainting spells. Wang Mengying was then consulted. The pulse was deep, wiry, slippery, and rapid. Wang told Binghua, "This resulted from excessive administration of warming and tonifying medicines, which stirred up liver wind, steamed body fluids into phlegm. The phlegm followed the wind upward, causing fainting. The residual pathogen flows through the collaterals, causing limb convulsions. Yang qi reverses upward, causing nasal congestion and facial edema. Turbid qi fails to descend downward, leading to bowel stagnation and lack of appetite." Binghua said, "Sir, your insight is divine! I have taken warming tonics for three months; can I still be saved?" Wang replied, "If you do not doubt my medicine, there is hope." A large dose of sweet-cold medicines to extinguish wind and resolve fluid retention was given, assisted by bitter-cool medicines to clear heat and soothe the liver. The fainting gradually stopped, and all ailments receded sequentially. Two months later, she was fully recovered.
A manual laborer, whose yin aspect was inherently deficient, suddenly contracted wind-dampness. His knees pricked with pain and felt sore and weak, unable to stand even for a moment. Wang Mengying prescribed Liuwei Dihuang Tang (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Decoction) plus Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix) and Dou Juan (Vigna Seed Germinatum). One dose brought improvement, and two doses cured him.
Mrs. Xu Yueyan suffered from numbness throughout the body, paralysis of the four limbs, bitter taste in the mouth with thirst, cold phlegm like ice, rebellious qi with nausea, delayed menstruation, and abdominal distension. She frequently drank extremely hot ginger soup, feeling temporarily relieved. From late autumn to mid-winter, medicines failed to cure her. Wang Mengying palpated the pulse: deep, wiry, and rapid. He asked, "Is urination hot like fire? Do you occasionally experience fainting?" The patient nodded affirmatively. The prescription included: Xue Geng, Xuanfu (Inulae Flos), Zhe Shi (Hematitum), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Lianshi (Meliae Fructus), Zhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam), Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix), Sangzhi (Mori Ramulus), Lingyangjiao (Saigae Tataricae Cornu), Ganlan (Olive), and Geke (Meretricis et Cyprini Shell). She took Danggui Longhui Wan (Angelica Sinensis and Gardenia Pill). The symptoms descended in order, and after twenty doses, she could get out of bed. Lingyangjiao and Zhe Shi were then removed, and Yangshen (American Ginseng Radix), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), Congrong (Cynomorii Herba), and Ou Zhi (Loti Radix Juice) were added. Gradually, she improved.
Gao suffered from soreness and pain in the tendons and collaterals of both knees, without redness or swelling. Lying down made the pain unbearable, forcing him to sit upright all night. Wang Mengying palpated the pulse: deficient and fine. Tongue coating was yellow and greasy, throat dry, urine red. The prescription was: Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Lianshi (Meliae Fructus), Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Dou Juan (Vigna Seed Germinatum), Sangzhi (Mori Ramulus), Zhuli (Bambusae Succus). She took Huqian Wan (Tiger Crouching Pill). After ten days, she recovered.
Xie Puxiang, whose constitution was inherently yin-deficient, suddenly suffered from pain at the Huantiao acupoint. Initially, it spread down the left leg, then shifted to the right leg, even causing calf cramps shooting up to the abdomen. Sometimes pain started from the breast and radiated down to the thigh. He cried out day and night, with cold limbs and spontaneous sweating, finding it difficult to turn over. Doctors, seeing his pale complexion, administered tonics. When Wang Mengying returned from Jiangxi in mid-spring, he palpated the pulse: wiry, soft, and slightly slippery. The patient feared heat, knew hunger, had red urine and hard stools, red tongue but no thirst. This was yin deficiency with phlegm-qi stagnation in the Jueyin channel. The prescription included: Congrong (Cynomorii Herba), Shoushi (Diabroticae Faex), Zhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam), Sigualuo (Luffae Fructus Retinervia), Juhe (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Huixiang (Foeniculi Fructus) stir-fried with Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Wuyu (Evodiae Fructus) stir-fried with Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Chuanjiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium) stir-fried with Wumei (Mume Fructus), Yanhusu (Corydalis Rhizoma) stir-fried with Lianshi (Meliae Fructus), Haizao (Sargassum), and Fuci (Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma). One dose reduced symptoms, several doses brought peace. Subsequently, Huqian Wan (Tiger Crouching Pill) plus Qin Jiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix) was given, leading to recovery.
