It is said: In the height of summer when it is hot, people often travel on roads exposed to the heat, and Heat-Toxin (Re Du) easily injures the body. If mild, the pathogen lodges in the Yang Meridians (Yang Jing), causing vomiting, rebellious Qi, dizziness, mental restlessness and depression, sweating with aversion to cold, fever and thirst. If not treated promptly at that time, the Heat will remain latent in the meridians for years without being eliminated, flaring up whenever it is hot, commonly known as "Summer-Qi" (Shu Qi). If severe, the Heat-Toxin enters the interior and combines with the Five Zang Organs. The exogenous pathogen becomes vigorous, leading to stagnation and stasis that cannot be dispersed, resulting in the sudden cessation of Yin Qi and the abrupt blockage of Yang Qi, with unpatency of the meridians and collaterals. Thus, one suddenly falls into a state of coma and suffocation, which is called "Zhong Yue" (Heat Stroke). This is caused by the attack of exogenous pathogens, while the True Zang Qi remains intact. If rescue treatment is received, recovery occurs once Qi circulation is restored. However, in treating Zhong Yue, cold substances must not be used; if cold is applied, it is incurable. This is because external application of cold causes the internal Heat to accumulate and prevents its dispersion.
It is said: The disease of Zhong Yue arises from exposure to Summer-Heat Pathogenic Factors. The pulse is wiry, thin, hollow, or slow. Symptoms include sweating, aversion to cold, fever, thirst, heaviness and pain in the body, chills and piloerection after urination, coldness of the four limbs, fever upon slight exertion, open mouth, and dry teeth. As stated in the classics, a deficient pulse with fever indicates Summer-Heat Injury. In such cases, sweating and purging methods are contraindicated. Sweating will worsen the aversion to cold; applying warm needle therapy will exacerbate the fever; frequent purging will intensify strangury (Lin syndrome). It is appropriate to treat with herbs that eliminate Heat Pathogens.
