Commentary states: The manifestation of jaundice in cold damage (Shanghan) involves the entire body changing color, appearing either like smoke-stained yellow or like the color of an orange. Any case where Yangming channel is affected by wind pathogen, or Taiyang channel is affected by dampness pathogen, will lead to jaundice. This is because after contracting the disease, there is no sweating and urination is obstructed; cold-dampness fails to dissipate, causing heat to knot in the Spleen and Stomach. The interstices (pores and muscle spaces) become closed, and stagnant heat qi combats with retained food, leading to stagnation and steaming without dispersion. Consequently, both large and small bowel movements become difficult and obstructed. This causes the body and face to turn yellow. The symptoms include abdominal fullness, generalized body pain, and fever. If the patient has lower abdominal fullness and urgency, dry and painful eyes, nasal bone pain, stiffness in both shoulders and neck, and tightness in the lower back, recovery will gradually occur once urination becomes smooth and free. At this time, frequent bowel movements are not required; excessive diarrhea may cause chest and heart distension. There is also a condition called "Urgent Jaundice" (Ji Huang), where the body turns very yellow suddenly. It presents with chest fullness, asthma, and life-threatening urgency within moments, hence the name. Some develop jaundice immediately upon illness onset, while others do not realize they have jaundice until they die and their skin turns yellow. These conditions are also caused by stagnant heat in the Spleen and Stomach, originating from epidemic Qi. They must be carefully differentiated. However, if fever and mental trembling occur, it indicates Urgent Jaundice.
For Yangming disease with fever and sweating, this represents heat venting outward, so jaundice will not occur. But if there is only head sweating, obstructed urination, and thirst prompting intake of fluids, this indicates stagnant heat inside the interior, and jaundice will definitely occur. Treatment via purgation should use Yinchen Hao Tang (Artemisiae Scopariae Decoction). Additionally, in cold damage lasting seven to eight days, if the body is yellow like an orange peel, urination is obstructed, and there is slight abdominal fullness, Yinchen Hao Tang (Artemisiae Scopariae Decoction) is appropriate.
Yin Chen Hao (Herba Artemisiae Scopariae, 6 liang), Zhi Zi (Fructus Gardeniae, 14 pieces), Da Huang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, raw, 3 liang).
The above three herbs are crushed to the size of hemp seeds. Each dose is 5 qian bi, boiled in 2 zhan of water until 1 zhan remains. Strain and take warm in three doses. Once urination becomes profuse and resembles soap pod juice, the jaundice will resolve.
For cold damage with stagnant heat in the interior causing definite jaundice, Ma Huang Lian Qiao Tang (Ephedra and Forsythia Decoction) formula:
Ma Huang (Caulis Ephedrae, root and node parts boiled to remove foam, 2 liang), Lian Qiao (Fructus Forsythiae, 2 liang), Xing Ren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum, peeled and pointed double kernels, 40 pieces), Zao (Fructus Jujubae, 12 pieces), Sheng Zi Bai Pi (Cortex Catalpae, cut, 1 sheng), Sheng Jiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens, 2 liang), Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 1 liang).
The above seven herbs are crushed to the size of hemp seeds. Each dose is 5 qian bi, boiled in 2 zhan of liao shui (rainwater) until 1 zhan remains. Strain and take warm at any time.
For cold damage with body jaundice and fever, Zhi Zi Bai Pi Tang (Gardenia and Phellodendron Bark Decoction) formula:

For Taiyang disease with body jaundice, pulse deep and knotted, hard lower abdomen, and free urination, this indicates no blood stasis. If urination is free and the person appears manic, this is definitive evidence of blood syndrome. Treatment should use Di Dang Tang (Di Dang Decoction) formula:
Shui Zhi (Hirudo, roasted, 30 pieces), Meng Chong (Bombyx Batryticatus, roasted, 30 pieces), Tao Ren (Semen Persicae, peeled and pointed double kernels, roasted, 10 pieces), Da Huang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, 3 liang).
The above four herbs are crushed to the size of hemp seeds. Each dose is 3 qian bi, boiled in 1.5 zhan of water until 7/10 remains. Strain and take warm.

The above twelve herbs are coarsely pounded and sifted. Each dose is 5 qian bi, boiled in 1.5 zhan of water until 1 zhan remains. Strain and take warm at any time.
For cold damage jaundice, or cases where prior purgatives failed, Nei Xiao Tang (Internal Resolution Decoction) reduces heat. Huang Qin Tang (Scutellaria Decoction) formula:
