Discussion states: When Yin pathogenic factors alone become excessive and Yang Qi suddenly declines, Yang is overcome by Yin, resulting in a state where both the interior and exterior are characterized by Yin coldness. This leads to the formation of "Yin Toxin" (Yin Du). In Shanghan (Cold Damage) disease, there are cases where Yin Toxin forms immediately upon contracting the illness, and cases where it transforms into Yin Toxin after taking herbal decoctions for five or six days without improvement. This occurs because the disease fundamentally belongs to the Yin category; excessive intake of cold-natured medicines or exposure to cold within and outside the Zang-Fu organs causes Yin to become even more dominant while Yang fails to recover. The clinical manifestations include cold extremities, severe pain in the umbilical and abdominal regions, a sensation as if the body has been beaten, vomiting, diarrhea, and a pulse that is deep, fine, and rapid. These constitute the presentation of Yin Toxin.
For treating Shanghan where Yin Toxin forms within one or two days of onset, or transforms into Yin Toxin after ten days of medication, presenting with heavy body, stiff back, colicky abdominal pain, throat obstruction, toxic qi attacking the heart, hardness below the heart, shortness of breath, retching, cyanotic lips, blackish complexion, cold extremities, deep and fine pulse, and a sensation as if beaten: If treated within five days, it is curable; if delayed until the seventh day, it is considered incurable. The appropriate formula is Yindu Gancao Tang (Yin Toxin Licorice Decoction).
Gancao (Zhi/Glazed Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Danggui (Zhi/Prepared Angelicae Sinensis Radix), each half liang; Xionghuang (Realgar), Shujiao (Sichuan Pepper, removed eyes and closed-mouth ones, stir-fried until sweat appears), each one fen; Biejia (Softshell Turtle Shell, prepared with vinegar, skirt removed), one and a half liang; Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig, coarse bark removed), half liang.
The above seven ingredients, except those requiring grinding, are cut into pieces the size of hemp seeds. Each dose consists of five qianbi (measurements), boiled in one dan and a half of water until reduced to eight parts. Strain and take warm.
For treating Yin Toxin Shanghan with panting and急促 breathing: Zhengyang Tang (True Yang Decoction).
Fuzi (Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix, cracked, skin and navel removed), one liang; Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig, coarse bark removed), three fen; Ganjiang (Dried Ginger), half liang.
The above three ingredients are cut into pieces the size of hemp seeds. Each dose of five qianbi is boiled in one dan of water until reduced to half a dan. Strain and take warm before meals.
For treating Yin Toxin Shanghan with mental restlessness and cold extremities: Baizhu Yin (Atractylodes Macrocephala Drink).
Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Wutou (Prepared Aconiti Radix, cracked, skin and navel removed), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix, cut and stir-fried), Fuzi (Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix, cracked, skin and navel removed), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, removed seedlings and leaves), each one liang; Ganjiang (Dried Ginger, prepared), half liang.
The above six ingredients are cut into pieces the size of hemp seeds. Each dose of two qianbi is boiled in one dan of water until reduced to six parts. Take hot, at any time, after straining.
For treating Yin Toxin Shanghan: Huiyang Fabiao Tang (Restore Yang and Release Exterior Decoction).
