Commentary states: When the Yin and Yang qi of the human body ascend and descend in order, the Sanjiao (Triple Burner) is smooth and harmonious, and the Spleen and Stomach functions are balanced and even, then it is possible to rot and ripen water and grain, transform dregs and refuse, conduct and drain them, and guide them downward into the intestines. If the Spleen and Stomach are deficient and cold, water and grain cannot be digested, leading to obstruction and blockage of Yin and Yang qi, disharmony of the Sanjiao, and failure of turbid Yin qi to descend. Instead, it rushes upward, thus causing vomiting.
However, the disease of regurgitation and vomiting arises from various causes: some result from excess in the diaphragm, some from fullness in the middle jiao, and some originate from the lower jiao. Although the manifestations vary, they all stem from the reversal of Stomach qi leading to vomiting. The Stomach is the sea of water and grain, and the Sanjiao is the pathway for water and grain. When Stomach qi is unimpeded and smooth, the Upper Jiao is like mist (describing the diffusion of essence), the Middle Jiao is like fermentation (describing decomposition and ripening), and the Lower Jiao is like a ditch (describing drainage). This state is called a healthy person. If Stomach qi is weak, water and grain stagnate, causing rejection in the Sanjiao and uneven ascending and descending of qi, resulting in deficiency and fullness. Eating leads to vomiting; there are cases where food eaten in the morning is vomited in the evening, or food eaten in the evening is vomited in the morning; there are cases where vomiting occurs immediately after eating; there are cases where grain is vomited and no further food can be taken; there are cases of retching without anything coming out; there are cases where thirst follows vomiting; there are cases where vomiting follows thirst; and there are cases where those who vomit should naturally be thirsty but are not. The root causes and treatments differ for each. For example, internal obstruction with regurgitation, where food cannot enter, indicates Fire pathogen; vomiting with food remaining for a long time before being expelled indicates absence of Fire (deficiency-cold). From these two examples, we know that although the name "vomiting" is the same, the treatment methods differ. Although treatment methods vary according to Cold, Heat, Deficiency, and Excess, the key is to stabilize Stomach qi as the foundation, balancing the ascent and descent of Yin and Yang, so that the disease of vomiting will resolve smoothly.
Commentary states: Vomiting is due to Stomach qi ascending instead of descending. It is like pouring water into a bottle with a small neck; the flow does not enter because it is obstructed by rising qi. The principle in human vomiting is the same. Generally, when Spleen and Stomach qi are weak, Wind-Cold interferes and agitates, causing retained fluid accumulation and undigested food. Stomach qi becomes deficient and distended, causing palpitations in the heart region, and qi rebels upward, thus causing vomiting.
To treat vomiting, eliminate middle fullness, Qi stagnation (Pi Qi), phlegm-rebellion with nausea, accumulated old food, yellow complexion, abdominal distension, disharmony of Zang-Fu organs, and undigested water and grain, and to regulate the Spleen and Stomach, use Chenxiang Decoction Pills Formula:
