It is stated that when the blood and qi of the human body are insufficient, nourishment becomes inadequate. Wind-pathogen takes advantage of this deficiency to strike one side, causing stagnation and涩 (obstruction) in Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) Qi. If left untreated for a long time, True Qi departs, leaving only the pathogenic factor, resulting in hemiplegia (Pian Ku). The manifestations may include coldness, numbness, flaccidity, or insensitivity to pain; this is known as unilateral muscle atrophy. If treated in due time, True Qi can be restored; if treatment is delayed, the limbs will become useless and immobile. The *Nei Jing* states: "Sweating on only one side leads to hemiplegia," which refers to this condition.
