Discussion states: When infants and children present with dysentery, discharging stasis blood resembling slices of chicken or duck liver along with the stool, this is termed Gu Du Li (Gu Poison Dysentery). This condition arises from the imbalance of seasonal cold and heat, where toxic pestilential qi invades the intestines and stomach. The pathogenic factor contends with qi and blood, transforming into dysentery. When blood toxin and vital qi are abundant, excessive heat damages the zang-fu organs, resembling the effects of gu poison; hence, it is named Gu Du Li.
To treat Gu Du Li in infants and children, characterized by bloody stool and emaciation, use Huanglian Yin (Coptis Decoction):
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 1 liang, remove mustache), Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu, sliced), Baihegen (White Lotus Root Rhizome), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, remove black heart), Qian Gen (Madder Root, each 3 fen), Baigupi (Decayed Drum Bark, roasted until scorched), Lanqing (Indigo Naturalis), Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted and crushed), Baitouweng (Pulsatillae Radix, remove rhizome head, each half liang).
