上六味。于铜器中，慢火令沸，煎取一半，渐渐火逼如膏，方去古钱，每用半小豆大点

黄连（去须一分末） 腻粉（半钱） 杏仁（汤浸去皮尖一分） 蕤仁（去皮半分）
上四味。先将杏仁蕤仁烂研如膏，后入黄连腻粉，更相和一处研了，以新绵浓裹。如棠
梨许，以新汲水一盏，于净器内，澄滤三遍，候至清取二分，浸药裹子，良久捩汁。仰卧，
将药裹 药点眼，十余度。
治暴赤眼肿痛。秦皮汤方
秦皮 黄连（去须） 黄柏（去粗皮） 甘草（各一两炙）
上四味。锉碎如麻豆，每用三钱匕，水一盏，入沙糖一弹子大，同煎一二十沸，滤去
滓，稍热洗眼，如冷再暖，一服可洗五度。
治暴赤眼涩痛。青梅膏方
青梅（七枚劈碎） 古字钱（七文） 盐花（一分） 黄连（去须一两）
上四味，粗捣筛，以水三升，煎取一升，滤去滓，如稀膏，入新瓶子内，一处盛系，勿
令泄气，埋七日，取出，每日三点目 。
治暴赤眼疼痛。铅丹膏方
铅丹（以绢罗过） 黄连（去须末） 蕤仁（去皮研各半两） 盐花（一分）
上四味，以蜜三两，用文武火，先煎蕤仁盐。待匀沸，即下铅丹黄连，煎如膏，瓷合盛
每次可用如半小豆大，以新汲水调化箸点。日三。
治眼暴赤热毒。蕤仁膏方
蕤仁（去皮研） 胡黄连（末各一分） 鸡子（一枚取去黄留清）
上二味，以绵裹，内鸡清中，浸一宿 眼，日数次，后则洗之。
治暴赤眼。大黄膏方
大黄（生捣末半两） 大麦面（三钱） 鸡子（去黄看多少用清）
上三味，调如膏，粘贴下睑。
治暴赤眼痛脑热。大黄膏方
大黄（末） 解毒子 木香（各三分）
上三味，捣罗如粉，浆水调为膏，于生绢上摊匀贴睑上，频易之。
治暴赤眼。沙糖黄连膏方
白沙糖 黄连（去须末各一两） 大枣（青州者七枚洗煮过去皮核）
上三味，捣熟如膏，如绿豆大，绵裹、新汲水浸点之。
治一切暴赤。眼龙脑膏方
龙脑（少许研细） 黄连（去须一两净洗为末极细） 麝香（少许研细）
上三味，以蜜调黄连为饼子，涂在白瓦器上，用艾四两，烧烟熏，取末刮下，入脑麝，
以瓷合盛，用时如皂荚子大，以新汲水调点之。
治暴赤眼。乳香膏方
甘草 黄连（去须各半两宣州者） 黄柏（去粗皮三分）
上三味，粗捣筛，以水二盏，煎至七分，绵滤去滓，后入腻粉少许，黄明乳香，皂子大
两块，研匀点之。

上二味，入罐子内，油单封闭令紧，沉于井底着泥处，一宿取出点之。

煎尽水如膏，入生龙脑少许和匀，瓷合收，每用倒流水，化少药，候匀点之。
治眼暴赤涩痛。黄柏膏方
黄柏（去粗皮为末） 蛇蜕（微炒细研为末各一两）
上二味，用醋浆水三盏，于铜器内，煎一盏，稀稠似乳，绵滤待冷，瓷合盛，点眼大
治暴赤眼肿痛。地黄膏方
生地黄（净洗切研） 黑豆（各二两生捣末）
上二味，捣成膏，临卧时，以盐汤洗眼后闭目，以药膏浓罨眼上，更不动，至晓水润药
令软取下。
治暴赤眼，热泪不止，疼痛隐闷。黄连丸方
黄连（去须一分为细末） 蕤仁（三十枚去壳细研）
上二味，水和薄摊瓷盘底，铜盘更佳、复之以热艾一片，旋以火烧艾，烟熏药上，艾尽
为度，刮下丸如梧桐子大，每以冷水少许，化药一丸，澄清点之。

淋于露地上，勿着屋下，来日早晨，滤去滓，用水于烈日内晒干，如盐花，入新瓷瓶盛后，
入龙脑少许，点目神效。

马牙硝（一分）
上一味为细末，安于鉴上，侧置铜盆中，夜露之，令露滴消下，铜盆内盛，取点目中，
八月半日白露下合之，勿用好鉴，恐损故也。
治肝脏风热，目暴赤，隐涩肿痛。羚羊角丸方
羚羊角（镑） 防风（去叉） 甘菊花 蔓荆实（去白皮） 栀子仁（各一两半） 赤

上一味。浆水浸一宿，洗眼。

蕤仁（去皮研碎） 铅丹（过细罗各半两） 井盐（研碎一分） 石胆（研碎半钱） 黄连（去须捣碎过细罗一两） 龙脑（研碎） 麝香（研碎各半钱） 蜜（五两）
以上八味药。除龙脑、麝香、蜂蜜外，先将蕤仁等药，反复研磨成粉状，用水一升，加入蜂蜜五两，一同煎至稀稠适度，用新棉过滤去渣，加入龙脑、麝香的粉末，调和均匀，用瓷器盛装。每次用铜筷蘸取少许点眼。
治疗眼睛突然发红疼痛的杏仁膏方：
杏仁（热水去皮尖双仁，研如膏状） 黄连（去须为末各半两） 腻粉（一钱） 白蜜（半合） 古铜钱（五文） 消梨（汁三合）
以上六味药。在铜器中，用慢火煮沸，煎取一半药液，慢慢用火逼干成膏状，才取出古铜钱。每次用半粒小豆大小的药膏点眼，每天两次。
治疗眼睛突然发红疼痛。蕤仁膏方（此方治暴赤肿痛并翳膜，只要瞳孔未受损均可治疗）：
蕤仁（去皮二两） 丹砂（研碎一分） 青钱（十文） 斗子（盐末） 盐绿末（各半钱）
以上五味药。取新好棉包裹药材和钱币，在银器中，用清晨的井水一盏，浸泡一夜，呈稀膏状。每次睡觉时用棉包在眼头点之。经过两个晚上点过后，应停两三日再点。宜避风两三日，如果不避风，有害无益。点药时要在深暗的房间中进行。
治疗风毒眼，以及眼睛突然发红。菊花防风散方：
菊花 防风（去叉口） 甘草 威灵仙（去土） 黄连（去须） 恶实（各三分）
以上六味药。捣碎过罗成为散剂。每次服用一钱匕，风毒引起的用葱汤调服，赤目引起的用新汲水调服，每天两次。
治疗突然发红眼睛，隐涩疼痛，眼屎眼泪不止。青金散方：
仙灵脾（取叶使用） 恶实（略炒） 木通（切碎） 黄芩（去黑心） 本（去土） 晚蚕砂（炒） 甘草（炙各一两）
以上七味药。捣碎过罗成为散剂。每次服用二钱匕，饭后用沙糖水调服。
治疗风赤、突然发红眼睛，退浮翳眯眼，胎赤烂，涩痒肿痛。还睛汤方：
山栀子仁 黄连（去须） 黄柏（去粗皮各一两） 细辛（去苗叶） 龙胆 杜仲（去粗皮炙锉各二两） 秦皮（去粗皮四两） 甘草（炙半两）
以上八味药。粗捣筛碎。每次用五钱匕，水三盏，放入竹叶七片，灯心二十茎，煎煮一二十沸。澄清去渣，早晨和临睡前，趁热洗眼，洗后避风。一天用两三次，凉了再加热洗，每次的药渣可用两天。
治疗眼睛突然发红，以及多年眼睑溃烂不愈，涩痛、眼球上有白膜。洗眼秦皮汤方：
秦皮（切碎） 蕤仁（去皮） 黄连（去须） 山栀子仁（各半两） 黄柏（一两切碎） 大枣（五枚去核）
以上六味药。粗捣筛碎，用水四升，煎取二升，滤去药渣，微热多次洗眼，凉了再加热，剩下的药渣可再次煎煮清洗。
治疗突然发红眼睛，涩痛肿痒。杏仁汤方：
杏仁（十四枚） 黄连（去须七枚） 腻粉（二钱） 沙糖（一钱）
以上四味药。在早晨睡醒还未说话时，口中去除杏仁皮，与黄连一起嚼烂，连同其余药物，全部装入生绢袋中系紧，用沸水浸泡清洗，凉了再用沸水加热，遇到夜晚露置室外。每次可用五次。
治疗突然发红眼睛疼痛，昏晕隐涩。黄连膏方：
黄连（去须一分，为末） 腻粉（半钱） 杏仁（热水浸去皮尖一分） 蕤仁（去皮半分）

以上四味药，用蜂蜜三两，用文武火，先煎蕤仁、盐。待均匀沸腾，即下铅丹、黄连，煎成膏状，用瓷盒盛装。每次可用半粒小豆大，用新汲水调化后用筷子点眼。每天三次。

以上两味药为末，每次用五钱匕，热水浸泡澄清，新棉过滤，趁热洗眼。
又一方：
附子（一枚炮裂去皮脐）
以上一味药。粗捣碎，如蚕砂大小。临睡前，置于眼中。
又一方：
黄连（去须二两）
以上一味药拍碎。用水二盏，煎取一盏，去渣用棉半两浸泡，取尽汁液，用来试眼。
又一方：
黄柏（一两）
以上一味药。削去粗皮切碎，用浆水一盏，煎至六分，去渣露置一夜，仍将刀安在盏上，明早五更，用井华水添至七分。空腹顿服。
又一方：
新粉脚（二斤）
以上一味药。用新的蒸笼箅子一个，干净纸两层，衬垫蒸笼箅，先安放粉脚，像淋灰的方法，用沸汤泼，日落时才淋在露地上，不要放在屋檐下，来日早晨，滤去渣，用水在烈日下晒干，如盐花状，装入新瓷瓶盛放后，加入少许龙脑，点眼神效。
又一方：
马牙硝（一分）
以上一味药为细末，放在镜子上，侧置铜盆中，夜间露置，让露水滴滴下溶解，铜盆内盛接，取点眼中。八月半日夜露下时收集，不要用好的镜子，恐怕损坏的缘故。
治疗肝脏风热，眼睛突然发红，隐涩肿痛。羚羊角丸方：

以上五味药。再次共同研匀，加入粟米粥调和，用艾烟熏之，丸如鸡头大。每次用一丸，用棉包裹，井华水浸泡点眼。

Ingredients: Huai Zhi (Locust Branch, *Robinia pseudoacacia* branch), Qin Pi (Qin Bark, *Fraxinus bark*), Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome, *Coptidis Rhizoma*), Rui Ren (Buckthorn Seed, *Rhamni Fructus*), Ya Xiao (Natrii Sulfas), Huang Bo (Phellodendron Bark, *Phellodendri Cortex*), Shan Zhi Zi (Gardenia Fruit, *Gardeniae Fructus*), Gu Zi Qian (Ancient Coin), Yan Shi (Salt), Dan Zhu Ye (Light Bamboo Leaf, *Lophatheri Herba*).
Preparation: Ten ingredients. Except for the coin, coarsely crush and sieve. Use five qian bi per dose. Add one sheng of water and the coin, decoct until one and a half sheng remains. Filter out the dregs, let it cool to warm temperature, and wash the eyes. If it becomes cold, reheat and wash again.
Rui Ren Gao (Buckthorn Ointment) for treating sudden red eyes with pain, membrane obstruction covering the pupil.
Ingredients: Rui Ren (Buckthorn Seed, *Rhamni Fructus*), Qian Dan (Lead Tetroxide, *Minium*), Jing Yan (Well Salt), Shi Dan (Chalcanthite), Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome, *Coptidis Rhizoma*), Long Nao (Borneol, *Borneolum Syntheticum*), She Xiang (Musk, *Moschi Fermentum*), Mi (Honey, *Mel*).
Preparation: Eight ingredients. Excluding Borneol, Musk, and Honey, first grind Rui Ren etc. finely into powder. Add one sheng of water and five liang of honey, decoct until the consistency is appropriate. Filter through new cotton, add powdered Borneol and Musk, mix evenly. Store in porcelain. Apply a small amount with a chopstick.
Xing Ren Gao (Almond Ointment) for treating sudden red eyes with pain.
Ingredients: Xing Ren (Apricot Seed, *Armeniacae Semen Amarum*), Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome, *Coptidis Rhizoma*), Ni Fen (Calomel, *Hydrargyri Chloridum Mite*), Bai Mi (White Honey, *Mel Album*), Gu Tong Qian (Ancient Copper Coin), Xiao Li (Pear Juice).
Preparation: Six ingredients. In a copper vessel, boil slowly over low heat until half the liquid remains. Continue heating until it becomes an ointment, then remove the coin. Apply a size of half a small bean to the eye twice daily.
Rui Ren Gao (Buckthorn Ointment) for treating sudden red eyes with swelling, pain, and nebula, provided the pupil is not damaged.
Ingredients: Rui Ren (Buckthorn Seed, *Rhamni Fructus*), Dan Sha (Cinnabar, *Cinnabaris*), Qing Qian (Green Coin), Dou Zi (Salt Powder), Yan Lv (Verdigris, *Aerugo*).
Preparation: Five ingredients. Wrap the herbs and coins in new cotton. Soak in one sheng of morning well water in a silver vessel overnight until it resembles a thin paste. At bedtime, apply the cotton bundle to the outer canthus of the eye. After two nights of application, stop for two to three days before resuming. Avoid wind for two to three days; failure to do so causes harm. Apply in a dark room.
Ju Hua Fang Feng San (Chrysanthemum and Saposhnikovia Powder) for treating wind-toxic eyes and sudden red eyes.
Ingredients: Ju Hua (Chrysanthemum Flower, *Chrysanthemi Flos*), Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root, *Saposhnikoviae Radix*), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, *Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma*), Wei Ling Xian (Salvia Root, *Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix*), Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome, *Coptidis Rhizoma*), E Shi (Burdock Fruit, *Arctii Fructus*).
Preparation: Six ingredients. Crush, sieve, and make into powder. Take one qian bi per dose. For wind-toxic type, take with green onion soup; for red-eye type, take with fresh drawn water. Twice daily.
Qing Jin San (Blue Gold Powder) for treating sudden red eyes with hidden astringency, pain, and continuous discharge/tearing.
Ingredients: Xian Ling Pi (Epimedium Leaf, *Epimedii Folium*), E Shi (Burdock Fruit, *Arctii Fructus*), Mu Tong (Akebia Stem, *Akebiae Caulis*), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root, *Scutellariae Radix*), Ben Cao (Ligusticum Rhizome, *Ligustici Rhizoma*), Wan Can Sha (Silkworm Droppings, *Bombyx Batryticatus*), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, *Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma*).

Ingredients: Shan Zhi Zi Ren (Gardenia Seed), Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome, *Coptidis Rhizoma*), Huang Bo (Phellodendron Bark, *Phellodendri Cortex*), Xi Xin (Asarum Root, *Asari Radix et Rhizoma*), Long Dan (Gentian Root, *Gentianae Radix et Rhizoma*), Du Zhong (Eucommia Bark, *Eucommiae Cortex*), Qin Pi (Qin Bark, *Fraxini Cortex*), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, *Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma*).
Preparation: Eight ingredients. Coarsely crush and sieve. Use five qian bi per dose. Add three sheng of water, seven leaves of bamboo, and twenty stems of rush. Decoct for 10-20 boils. Clarify and filter. Wash eyes hot in the morning and before bed, avoiding wind afterward. Use 2-3 times daily. Reheat if cold. One dose lasts two days.
Xi Yan Qin Pi Tang (Wash Eyes Qin Pi Decoction) for treating sudden red eyes, chronic eyelid ulceration not healing, astringency, pain, and white membrane on the eyeball.
Ingredients: Qin Pi (Qin Bark, *Fraxini Cortex*), Rui Ren (Buckthorn Seed, *Rhamni Fructus*), Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome, *Coptidis Rhizoma*), Shan Zhi Zi Ren (Gardenia Seed), Huang Bo (Phellodendron Bark, *Phellodendri Cortex*), Da Zao (Jujube, *Ziziphi Jujubae Fructus*).
Preparation: Six ingredients. Coarsely crush and sieve. Add four sheng of water, decoct to two sheng. Filter. Wash eyes several times while slightly warm. Reheat if cold. Dregs can be re-decocted for washing.
Xing Ren Tang (Almond Decoction) for treating sudden red eyes with astringency, pain, swelling, and itching.
Ingredients: Xing Ren (Apricot Seed, *Armeniacae Semen Amarum*), Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome, *Coptidis Rhizoma*), Ni Fen (Calomel, *Hydrargyri Chloridum Mite*), Sha Tang (Rock Sugar).
Preparation: Four ingredients. In the morning upon waking but before speaking, peel almonds and chew them together with Huang Lian until mashed. Combine with other medicines, place in a raw silk bag tied securely. Soak in boiling water to wash eyes. Reheat with boiling water if cold. Leave exposed to night dew. Use up to five times.
Huang Lian Gao (Coptis Ointment) for treating sudden red eyes with pain, dizziness, and hidden astringency.
Ingredients: Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome, *Coptidis Rhizoma*), Ni Fen (Calomel, *Hydrargyri Chloridum Mite*), Xing Ren (Apricot Seed, *Armeniacae Semen Amarum*), Rui Ren (Buckthorn Seed, *Rhamni Fructus*).
Preparation: Four ingredients. First grind Xing Ren and Rui Ren into a paste. Add Huang Lian and Ni Fen powders, mix and grind thoroughly. Wrap thickly in new cotton. Size of a sand pear. Use one sheng of fresh drawn water, clarify and filter three times in a clean vessel. Take two fen of the clear liquid, soak the medicine packet, and wring out the juice after a while. Lie supine and apply the soaked packet to the eyes ten-plus times.
Qin Pi Tang (Qin Bark Decoction) for treating sudden red eyes with swelling and pain.
Ingredients: Qin Pi (Qin Bark, *Fraxini Cortex*), Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome, *Coptidis Rhizoma*), Huang Bo (Phellodendron Bark, *Phellodendri Cortex*), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, *Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma*).
Preparation: Four ingredients. Cut into sizes like hemp seeds. Use three qian bi per dose. Add one sheng of water and a rock-sugar-sized piece of rock sugar. Decoct for 10-20 boils. Filter. Wash eyes while slightly warm. Reheat if cold. One dose allows for five washes.
Qing Mei Gao (Green Plum Ointment) for treating sudden red eyes with astringency and pain.
Ingredients: Qing Mei (Green Plum, *Mume Fructus*), Gu Zi Qian (Ancient Coin), Yan Hua (Salt Flower), Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome, *Coptidis Rhizoma*).
Preparation: Four ingredients. Coarsely crush and sieve. Add three sheng of water, decoct to one sheng. Filter. Resembles a thin paste. Put in a new bottle, seal tightly to prevent leakage. Bury for seven days. Take out and apply to eyes three times daily.
Qian Dan Gao (Lead Tetroxide Ointment) for treating sudden red eyes with pain.
Ingredients: Qian Dan (Lead Tetroxide, *Minium*), Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome, *Coptidis Rhizoma*), Rui Ren (Buckthorn Seed, *Rhamni Fructus*), Yan Hua (Salt Flower).
Preparation: Four ingredients. Use three liang of honey. Over mild fire, first decoct Rui Ren and salt. When uniformly boiling, add Qian Dan and Huang Lian. Decoct into an ointment. Store in a porcelain box. Use half a small bean size per dose, dissolve in fresh drawn water, and apply with a chopstick. Three times daily.
Rui Ren Gao (Buckthorn Ointment) for treating sudden red eyes with heat toxin.
Ingredients: Rui Ren (Buckthorn Seed, *Rhamni Fructus*), Hu Huang Lian (False Coptis Rhizome, *Coptidis Rhizoma* substitute or *Picrorhizae Rhizoma*), Ji Zi (Chicken Egg, *Galli Ovum*).
Preparation: Two ingredients. Wrap in cotton, place in egg white, and soak overnight in the eye. Apply several times daily, then wash.
Da Huang Gao (Rhubarb Ointment) for treating sudden red eyes.
Ingredients: Da Huang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome, *Rhei Radix et Rhizoma*), Da Mai Mian (Barley Flour, *Hordei Farina*), Ji Zi (Chicken Egg White, *Galli Albumen*).
Preparation: Three ingredients. Mix into an ointment. Paste onto the lower eyelid.
Da Huang Gao (Rhubarb Ointment) for treating sudden red eyes with pain and brain heat.
Ingredients: Da Huang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome, *Rhei Radix et Rhizoma*), Jie Du Zi (Detoxification Seed), Mu Xiang (Costus Root, *Aucklandiae Radix*).
Preparation: Three ingredients. Crush and sieve into powder. Mix with Jiang Shui (fermented grain water) into an ointment. Spread evenly on raw silk and paste onto the eyelid. Change frequently.
Sha Tang Huang Lian Gao (Sugar Coptis Ointment) for treating sudden red eyes.
Ingredients: Bai Sha Tang (White Rock Sugar), Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome, *Coptidis Rhizoma*), Da Zao (Jujube, *Ziziphi Jujubae Fructus*).
Preparation: Three ingredients. Mash into an ointment. Form into pills the size of mung beans. Wrap in cotton, soak in fresh drawn water, and apply.
Long Nao Gao (Borneol Ointment) for treating all sudden red eyes.
Ingredients: Long Nao (Borneol, *Borneolum Syntheticum*), Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome, *Coptidis Rhizoma*), She Xiang (Musk, *Moschi Fermentum*).
Preparation: Three ingredients. Mix Huang Lian with honey to form cakes. Place on a white tile. Smoke with four liang of Mugwort (*Artemisia argyi*) smoke. Scrape down the ash/powder. Add Borneol and Musk. Store in a porcelain box. Use a size of a soap pod, dissolve in fresh drawn water, and apply.
Ru Xiang Gao (Frankincense Ointment) for treating sudden red eyes.
Ingredients: Gan Cao (Licorice Root, *Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma*), Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome, *Coptidis Rhizoma*), Huang Bo (Phellodendron Bark, *Phellodendri Cortex*).
Preparation: Three ingredients. Coarsely crush and sieve. Add two sheng of water, decoct to seven parts. Filter through cotton. Add a little Ni Fen (Calomel, *Hydrargyri Chloridum Mite*) and yellow-clear Ru Xiang (Frankincense, *Boswelliae Resina*). Grind into two soap-pod sized pieces and apply.
Huang Lian Gao (Coptis Ointment) for treating sudden red eyes.
Ingredients: Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome, *Coptidis Rhizoma*), Long Nao (Borneol, *Borneolum Syntheticum*).
Preparation: Two ingredients. Place in a jar, seal tightly with oil paper. Sink to the mud at the bottom of a well overnight. Take out and apply.
Xiang La Gao (Incense Wax Ointment) for treating sudden red eyes with wind-heat, itching, and pain.
Ingredients: Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome, *Coptidis Rhizoma*), Qin Pi (Qin Bark, *Fraxini Cortex*).
Preparation: Two ingredients. Coarsely crush and sieve. Soak in one bowl of morning well water from the fifth watch on New Year's Eve for 21 days. Filter through cotton into a silver vessel. Decoct over mild fire until water evaporates and it becomes an ointment. Add a little raw Borneol and mix. Store in a porcelain box. Use flowing water to dissolve a small amount and apply.
Huang Bo Gao (Phellodendron Ointment) for treating sudden red eyes with astringency and pain.
Ingredients: Huang Bo (Phellodendron Bark, *Phellodendri Cortex*), She Tui (Snake Slough, *Boidis Skin*).
Preparation: Two ingredients. Use three sheng of vinegar-grain water. Decoct in a copper vessel to one sheng. Consistency like milk. Filter through cotton while cold. Store in a porcelain box. Apply to the outer canthus.
Di Huang Gao (Rehmannia Ointment) for treating sudden red eyes with swelling and pain.
Ingredients: Sheng Di Huang (Fresh Rehmannia Root, *Rehmanniae Radix Recens*), Hei Dou (Black Soybean, *Sojae Semen Nigrum*).
Preparation: Two ingredients. Pound into an ointment. Before bed, wash eyes with salt water, close eyes, and apply a thick layer of ointment. Do not move until dawn when moisture softens it, then remove.
Huang Lian Wan (Coptis Pill) for treating sudden red eyes with continuous hot tears, pain, and hidden stuffiness.
Ingredients: Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome, *Coptidis Rhizoma*), Rui Ren (Buckthorn Seed, *Rhamni Fructus*).
Preparation: Two ingredients. Mix with water and spread thinly on a porcelain plate (copper is better). Cover with a piece of hot Mugwort (*Artemisia argyi*). Burn the Mugwort to smoke the medicine until exhausted. Scrape down and form pills the size of wutong seeds. Dissolve one pill in a little cold water, clarify, and apply.

One ingredient. Smash. Decoct two sheng of water to one sheng. Filter. Soak half liang of cotton in the liquid until fully saturated. Test on the eye.

Gou Qi Gen Ye (Goji Root and Leaves, *Lycii Radix et Folium*).
One ingredient. Clean, crush, squeeze juice, and apply with a chopstick.

Huang Bo (Phellodendron Bark, *Phellodendri Cortex*).
One ingredient. Peel coarse skin, cut. Decoct one sheng of Jiang Shui (fermented grain water) to six parts. Filter. Leave exposed overnight. Place a knife on the cup. At dawn, add morning well water to seven parts. Drink on an empty stomach.

Xin Fen Jiao (New Starch Sediment, *Amylum Sedimentum*).
One ingredient. Use a new steamer grate lined with double-layer clean paper. Place starch sediment. Pour boiling water as if leaching ash. Leach onto open ground at sunset, not under eaves. Next morning, filter. Dry in strong sun until resembling salt flowers. Store in a new porcelain bottle. Add a little Borneol. Apply to eyes with divine effect.
Another prescription:
Ya Xiao (Natrii Sulfas, *Natrii Sulfas*).
One ingredient. Make into fine powder. Place on a mirror, set sideways in a copper basin. Leave exposed to night dew so drops fall into the basin. Collect and apply to eyes. Collect during the dew of August 15th. Do not use good mirrors to avoid damage.
Ling Yang Jiao Wan (Antelope Horn Pill) for treating Liver wind-heat, sudden red eyes, hidden astringency, swelling, and pain.
Ingredients: Ling Yang Jiao (Antelope Horn, *Saiga Tatarica Cornu*), Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root, *Saposhnikoviae Radix*), Gan Ju Hua (Chrysanthemum Flower, *Chrysanthemi Flos*), Man Jing Zi (Vitex Fruit, *Viticis Fructus*), Zhi Zi Ren (Gardenia Seed), Chi Shao Yao (Red Peony Root, *Paeoniae Radix Rubra*), Wei Yu (Polygonatum Rhizome, *Polygonati Rhizoma*), Da Ma Ren (Hemp Seed, *Cannabis Semen*), Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber, *Ophiopogonis Tuber*), Po Xiao (Mirabilite, *Natrii Sulfas*).
Preparation: Ten ingredients. Crush, sieve, and make into powder. Refine honey and form pills the size of wutong seeds. Take 20 pills per dose after meals with warm water, and another dose before bed. Increase to 30 pills.
Da Huang Tang (Rhubarb Decoction) for treating sudden red eyes with heat and pain.
Ingredients: Da Huang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome, *Rhei Radix et Rhizoma*), Zhi Zi Ren (Gardenia Seed), Fu Shen (Poria with Wood, *Poria cum Ramo Quercus*), Sheng Mai Men Dong (Fresh Ophiopogon Tuber, *Ophiopogonis Tuber*), Xi Jiao (Rhinoceros Horn, *Rhinocerotis Cornu* - note: substitute with Buffalo Horn *Bubali Cornu* in modern practice), Xuan Fu Hua (Inula Flower, *Inulae Flos*).
Preparation: Six ingredients. Cut into hemp seed sizes. Add six sheng of water, decoct to three sheng. Add one liang of Mang Xiao (Mirabilite, *Natrii Sulfas*). Decoct to two sheng. Filter. Divide into three warm doses after meals.
Xi Jiao Tang (Rhinoceros Horn Decoction) for treating Liver-Heart heat accumulation attacking the eyes, sudden redness and swelling, hidden astringency, and pain.
Ingredients: Xi Jiao (Rhinoceros Horn, *Rhinocerotis Cornu* - note: substitute with Buffalo Horn *Bubali Cornu*), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root, *Scutellariae Radix*), Qu Mai Sui (Dianthera Spike, *Diantherae Spica*), Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome, *Coptidis Rhizoma*), Zhi Zi Ren (Gardenia Seed), Che Qian Zi (Plantago Seed, *Plantaginis Semen*), Mu Tong (Akebia Stem, *Akebiae Caulis*), Da Huang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome, *Rhei Radix et Rhizoma*), Chai Hu (Bupleurum Root, *Bupleuri Radix*), Qing Xiang Zi (Celosia Seed, *Celosiae Semen*).
