Commentary states: Dysentery accompanied by generalized edema is caused by chronic dysentery. Prolonged dysentery weakens Stomach Qi and empties the Intestines; the Stomach corresponds to Earth. It is responsible for transforming food and fluids and nourishing muscles. If Stomach Earth Qi declines and cannot overcome dampness, Water Qi moves recklessly and overflows into the skin, thus causing dysentery with concomitant edema. Recovery occurs when urination becomes free.
For summer sudden cold or high fever, diarrhea-dysentery with excessive thirst, resulting in generalized edema, with a deep, fine, and slightly rapid pulse, use Zeqi Tang (Ze Qi Decoction):
Zeqi (Stellariae Herba, 泽漆) (stir-fried, 1.5 liang), Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus, 吴茱萸) (washed with water, dried, stir-fried), Chifuling (Polyporus, 赤茯苓) (remove black skin), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 白术), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix, 桔梗) (cut and stir-fried), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 当归) (cut and dried), Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu, 犀角).
The above eleven ingredients are cut like hemp seeds. Each dose uses five qianbi of herbs, boiled in two zhan of water until reduced to eight parts. Strain and take warm. Rest for five to six days after taking, then one may administer Nuqu San.
For deficiency edema following dysentery, this medicine promotes urination and reduces swelling, use Nuqu San (Nu Qu Powder):
Nuqu (Fermented Dough, 女曲) (2 liang), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, 干姜) (pao), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, 细辛) (remove roots and leaves), Jiaomu (Sichuan Pepper Seed, 椒目) (lightly stir-fried), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, 附子) (pao, split, remove skin and bud), Gui (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 桂) (remove rough bark, each 1 liang).
The above six ingredients are pounded and sifted into powder. Take one qianbi with wine. If ineffective, increase to three qianbi. Three times daily. For postpartum women with deficiency fullness, this medicine is highly effective.
For post-dysentery edema and fullness, shortness of breath with coughing, and hematuria, use Zeqi Tang (Ze Qi Decoction):
Zeqieye (Folium Stellariae, 泽漆叶) (lightly stir-fried, 5 liang), Sangbaipipi (Mori Cortex, 桑根白皮) (roasted until yellow, cut), Yuliren (Prunus Armeniacae Semen, 郁李仁) (soaked in water, peel removed, kernel removed, stir-fried cooked, each 3 liang), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, 杏仁) (soaked in water, peel removed, twin kernels removed, stir-fried fragrant), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 人参) (each 1.5 liang), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 白术) (cut and stir-fried), Chenjupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 陈橘皮) (soaked in water, white part removed, dried, each 1 liang).
The above seven ingredients are coarsely crushed and sieved. Each dose uses five qianbi, boiled in one zhan of water. Add three slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 生姜), boil until reduced to eight parts, strain and take warm. Take again after half a shichen (one hour). The goal is to discharge several sheng of yellow fluid or until urination becomes free.
For post-dysentery Spleen and Stomach weakness, inability to control and transport Water Qi, leading to body swelling and fullness, use Sangbaipipi Tang (Mulberry Bark Decoction):
Sangbaipipi (Mori Cortex, 桑根白皮) (roasted until yellow, cut), Chifuling (Polyporus, 赤茯苓) (remove black skin), Yuliren (Prunus Armeniacae Semen, 郁李仁) (soaked in water, peel removed, kernel removed, bran-stir-fried and ground, each 2 liang), Chenjupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 陈橘皮) (soaked in water, white part removed, dried, each 1 liang).
The above six ingredients are coarsely crushed and sieved. Each dose uses five qianbi, boiled in one and a half zhan of water until reduced to eight parts. Strain and take warm. Three times daily.

Strain, add herbs, boil until reduced to one zhan. Divide into two doses. If not cured, take frequently using two batches.
