Commentary states: Luoli (scrofula), its root cause is often due to anger causing qi reversal, worry and fear, or food containing residual toxins from insects and rodents, or wind-heat pathogenic factors lodging in the muscles. Liaoqiao Tang (Forsythia Decoction): Liaoqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Kunbu (Laminariae Thallus [washed to remove saltiness and roasted]), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus [pulp removed, bran-fried], each 1.5 liang), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix [sprouts removed]), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma [roasted and crushed]), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis [crushed]), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix [White]), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix [black heart removed]), Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum [crushed]), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix [sliced and roasted]), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma [each 1 liang]). Sanhuang Wan (Three Yellows Pill): Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma [crushed and fried]), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix [sliced and roasted, each 1 liang]), Zhizi Ren (Gardeniae Semen [1 fen]), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix [sprouts removed, 3 fen]), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma [beard removed]), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix [black heart removed]), Chi Fuling (Poria Cocos [red pelt removed]), Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex [rough bark removed]), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma [processed]), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix [each 0.5 liang]). The above ten herbs are pounded and sifted into powder, mixed with refined honey to form pills the size of small beans. Take 10 pills per dose, with warm wine on an empty stomach, three times daily. Aim for mild laxation, then adjust dosage according to condition.
Treatment for initial onset of luoli, where nodules on the side of the neck are firm like stones, with skin and muscle exhibiting alternating cold and heat, redness, and swelling. Wuxi Tang (Black Rhinoceros Horn Decoction): Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu [shaved]), Eshi (Arctii Fructus [fried, each 3 liang]), Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum [3 fen]), Shexiang (Moschus [powdered, 0.5 qian]), Dingxiang (Syzygii Flos [0.5 liang]), Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix [3 fen]), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma [crushed and fried]), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis [crushed]), Shegan (Belamcandae Rhizoma), Liaoqiao (Forsythiae Fructus [each 1 liang]). Treatment for luoli with roots in the liver. Sangbaipi Tang (Mulberry Root Bark Decoction): Sanggen Baipi (Mori Cortex [crushed]), Xiaoshi (Natrii Sulfas [powdered, each 2 liang]), Zi Ge (Tetrastigma Caulis), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix [each 3 fen]), Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu [shaved]), Hu Zhang (Polygoni Cuspidati Rhizoma et Radix [each 1 fen]). Shengxi Wan (Fresh Rhinoceros Horn Pill): Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu [shaved, 0.5 qian]), Longnao (Borneolum Syntheticum), Shexiang (Moschus [powdered, each 0.5 fen]), Hongniangzi (Lyttae Caraboidea [20 pieces]), Banmao (Mylabris [21 pieces, head, wings, and legs removed, fried with Hongniangzi in bean flour until scorched]). The above five herbs are pounded and sifted into fine powder. Use bean flour paste to form pills the size of green mung beans. Take 1 pill per dose on an empty stomach at midnight and before sleep, with warm aged tea. After ten days, increase to 2 pills.
Treatment for wind-heat toxin and qi-gas, tubercles under the neck, and conditions about to become carbuncles, sores, furuncles, or back abscesses. Ningbing San (Congealed Ice Powder): Lvdou Fen (Vigna Radiatae Semen Pulvis), Ruxiang (Olibanum [powdered, each 1 liang]). The above two herbs are mixed and ground into powder. Treatment for all types of luoli tubercles. Da Xiao Wan (Great Efficacy Pill): Banmao (Mylabris [1 piece]), Heidou (Sojae Semen Nigrum [7 germinated grains]). The above two herbs are ground together and formed into pills the size of green mung beans. Take 5 pills per dose with clear tea water; infants take 1 pill.
Treatment for luoli filling the neck without ulceration, and painful swollen tubercles. Zaozi Wan (Soap Pod Pill): Buzhu Zaozi (Non-moth-eaten Gleditsiae Fructus [300 pods]). One herb: soak in 1.5 sheng of wine with 1 liang of Sha (Arsenolite) dissolved, for seven days. Simmer slowly until the wine is exhausted. Take 3 pills per dose, holding them in the mouth to dissolve before sleep. Cure expected within half a month.
Treatment for luoli swelling and knotting. Neixiao Formula (Internal Resolution Formula): Haizao (Sargassum Thallus [1 jin]). One herb: soak in 5 sheng of wine for several days. Drink a small amount after meals.
Another formula: Woniu Ke (Snail Shell [any amount]). One herb: grind into fine powder. Each dose consists of 2 qianbi, taken on an empty stomach with rice drink, twice daily. Self-resolution expected by the 49th day.

Danshen Gao (Salvia Ointment): Danshen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma [roasted and crushed]), Baiji (Bletillae Rhizoma [each 2 liang]), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Shuodigen (Tetrastigmae Caulis [each 1.5 liang]), Duohuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix [radicle removed]), Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Rhizoma), Liaoqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Bailian (Pentaphragmatis Radix), Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Xingren (Pruni Semen [skin, tip, and double-kernel removed, each 1 liang]). The above ten herbs are finely cut. Soak in 1 sheng of fresh Rehmanniae Juice overnight. Simmer gently in a pan for ten boils. Add 4 sheng of lard (Zhigao) and simmer gently for the duration of cooking a meal. Once the ointment is ready, strain. Apply to the affected area 2-3 times daily.
Treatment for luoli polyps and hard knots. Bailian Gao (Pentaphragma Ointment): Bailian (Pentaphragmatis Radix), Mangcao (Illicii Anisi Stellati Herba? Note: Mangcao usually refers to Illicium lanceolatum or similar toxic herb, context implies topical use), Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma [raw, each 3 liang]). The above six herbs are pounded and sifted into powder. Mix with vinegar to form a paste as needed. Apply on cloth and patch it. Replace when dry.
Treatment for wind-heat hard knots, red and painful swelling, and sudden nodules under the cheeks/jaw. Xiaodu Tu Formula (Disinfectant Paste): Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma [2 liang]), Jingtian (Sedum Acre [5 liang, also known as Huhuocao]). The above two herbs are pounded together until mashed. Apply to the affected area. Reapply when dry.
Treatment for luoli accumulation that does not disperse, hard as stone. Dasuan Gao (Garlic Ointment): Dasuan (Allii Sativi Bulbus [3 cloves, pounded]), Shexiang (Moschus [powdered, 0.5 qianbi]). The above two herbs are mixed evenly, applied on cloth, and patched. Change twice daily. Freshly pounded is best.
Treatment for luoli swelling and malignant kernel formation. Acupuncture is contraindicated, as is treatment for unruptured carbuncles. Formula: Mangcao (Illicii Anisi Stellati Herba? Or possibly another Mangcao, 1 liang). One herb: grind into powder, mix with egg white, apply and patch. Change twice daily.
Treatment for luoli that has become a fistula, chronic and non-healing, treated thousands of times with success. Zihong San (Purple Red Powder): Xinpi (Realgar/Arsenic compound [1 qian]), Fanshi (Alumen [2 qian]), Qiandan (Minii Rubrum [3 qian]). The above three herbs: place in a porcelain jar. Add Xinpi first, then Fanshi, then Qiandan. Cover evenly, seal with salt mud, and calcine over charcoal fire until smoke ceases and the color turns purple... mix and apply...
Taohong San (Peach Red Powder): Xuejie (Dragon's Blood [must be genuine; if unavailable, use dark red cinnabar as substitute]). One herb: grind into fine powder. Mix with own saliva. Apply frequently day and night. When the sore forms a scab, wash with Yudushang Tang (Poison-Bathing Decoction).
Yudushang Tang (Poison-Bathing Decoction): Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex [rough bark removed]), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma [beard removed]), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma [crushed]), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix [black heart removed, each 1 liang)), Baizhi (Platycladi Cacumen [one handful, cut to length of a sieve]), Dadou (Sojae Semen [1 he]). The above six herbs are coarsely pounded and sieved. Use 3-4 spoons, boil in 2 sheng of water until reduced to 1 sheng. Wash while hot, 3-4 times daily. After washing off scabs, apply Pingji San (Skin-Leveling Powder).
Pingji San (Skin-Leveling Powder): Huang Goutou Gu (Calcan Humani Canis [burned to ash]), Lingli Jia (Manis Squama [burned to ash, each 1 qian]), Luankou (Human Hair [a ball the size of a finger, burned to ash]). The above three herbs are ground evenly. If the sore is dry, mix with own saliva to moisten and apply. Apply 3-4 times daily. The sore will level and heal.
Emergency Moxibustion Method for luoli in the neck forming lumps, or any contact-induced condensation resembling a carbuncle. Dutou Suan (Single-Clove Garlic [1 clove]). One herb: cut off both ends, remove the core. Shape moxa cones to match the size of the garlic. Apply to the... point/mole and moxibustate. Do not break the skin; only aim to transmit the qi. Do not fear the heat. Change the garlic every 7 moxa cones. Up to 7 changes may be used to eliminate the condition.
Treatment for luoli. Baican San (White Silkworm Powder): Bai Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus [1 liang]), Qilinjie (Dragon's Blood), Moyao (Myrrha [each 0.5 liang]). The above three herbs are pounded and ground into powder. Each dose consists of 1.5 qianbi, taken with warm wine mixed with Shexiang (Moschus).
Treatment for luoli, whether ruptured or not. Woniu Wan (Snail Pill): Woniu (Helix Aspersa/Mollusc [half bowl]), Jisu (Elsholtziae Herba [half jin]). The above two herbs are pounded extremely finely. Soak in water overnight, steam with rice cake dough, and form pills the size of wutong tree seeds. Take 15 pills per dose. If the sore is unruptured, take with grain water. If ruptured, take with mint decoction. Three times daily.
Treatment for luoli sores with continuous pus discharge. Guanhui San (Jar Ash Powder): Fen Dui Li Po Wa Guan Er (Ear of broken clay jar from manure heap). One herb: clean thoroughly. Dig a pit in the stove heart, place the jar inside, and burn for three days until it crumbles to touch. Grind finely. Sprinkle dry powder onto the sore.
Treatment for luoli. Shexi San (Snake and Rhinoceros Powder): Baihua She Rou (Bungarus Parvus Meat [soaked in wine, dried, 4 liang]), Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu [shaved, 1 liang]), Qing Ju Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium [white pith removed, roasted, 0.5 liang]), Qianniuzi (Pharbitidis Semen [1.5 liang total: 1 liang fried, 0.5 liang raw]). The above four herbs are pounded and sifted into powder. Each dose consists of 2 qianbi, plus 2 qianbi of Nifen (Calomel/Nigrum Hydrargyri), taken with glutinous rice drink. Take at dawn (fifth watch). By mid-morning, foul matter should be evacuated. If not fully evacuated, repeat after half a month. Unformed sores will resolve internally; formed sores will dry and close.
Treatment for five types of luoli. Muli San (Oyster Shell Powder): Muli (Ostrea Concha [calcined and powdered]), Liaoqiao (Forsythiae Fructus [fried on tile and pounded, each 1 liang]). The above two herbs are made into fine powder. Each dose consists of 1 qianbi, taken with non-grain alcohol before sleep. After cure, take another 1 liang to prevent recurrence forever.
Treatment for luoli tubercles. Xijiao Wan (Black Rhinoceros Horn Pill): Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu [crushed]), Wulan (Isatidis Folium? Or distinct herb), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix [black heart removed]), Shan Zhizi Ren (Gardeniae Semen), Badou (Crotonis Fructus [heart and skin removed, fried, pounded, oil expressed, each 0.5 liang]), Shengma Huang (Cimicifugae Rhizoma [crushed]), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix [forks removed]), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma [roasted and crushed, each 3 fen]), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma [raw crushed, 1.5 liang]), Lianzhu Cao (Smilacis Glabrae Rhizoma? Or distinct herb [1 liang]). The above eleven herbs are pounded and ground into powder. Mix with refined honey to form pills the size of wutong tree seeds. Take 3 pills per dose with rice drink. If no laxation, increase to 6-7 pills. Stop when laxation occurs.
Treatment for initial formation of luoli, nodules like plum/pit fruits, gradually failing to dissipate, which would then destroy the neck and axillae. Neixiao Wan (Internal Resolution Pill): Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Danshen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Kushen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix), Heshouwu (Polygoni Multiflori Radix [each 1 liang, finely crushed]). The above five herbs are pounded and sifted into powder. Separately, take ten stalks of Zaojiao (Gleditsiae Fructus), connect with hemp rope, leave a string end, place in a bottle. Bury the bottle in the ground, leaving the mouth exposed. Soak in urine of a boy for 21-30 days. If it rains, cover it to keep water out. When time is sufficient, take out, rinse with water, hang in a shady place to dry... use hand... half qian... (text missing).
