Discourse states: The condition of extreme tendon deficiency arises from liver deficiency with wind pathogen invasion, typically occurring on Jia and Yi days in spring. This is because the Liver governs the tendons and belongs to the Foot Jueyin Meridian. When wind pathogen invades internally and resides in the Liver, it causes Liver deficiency; Liver deficiency leads to tendon deficiency, hence termed "extreme tendon deficiency." Symptoms include predisposition to sadness, a complexion that is greenish-white appearing under the eyes, inability of tendons to move when exposed to cold, pain in fingers and nails, and frequent suffering from muscle spasms (tendon twisting). Ancients referred to this as "Liver deficiency wind."
The condition of extreme tendon excess causes irritability, dry throat, cough upon exposure to heat pathogens, hypochondriac pain during coughing, inability to turn or shift the body, or fullness and pain in the soles of the feet. This is because the Liver governs the tendons; wind pathogen injuring the Liver causes Yang qi to prevail internally. Yang prevalence leads to Liver excess, and Liver excess leads to tendon excess, hence termed "extreme tendon excess."
To treat extreme tendon deficiency with symptoms of sadness, greenish complexion, immobility of tendons due to cold-dampness, and pain in all ten fingernails, use Tianxiong Wan Formula:
