[Discussion] The so-called Kidney Labor (Shen Lao) refers to the injury of the Kidney caused by overexertion. When the Kidney is injured, it manifests as a decrease in essence (Jing), pain in the lower back and waist, difficulty in bending forward and backward, difficult urination with occasional dribbling, pain in the genitalia, dampness and sores in the scrotum, fullness and urgency in the lower abdomen, cold limbs, and coldness in the lower extremities. These are all signs of Kidney Labor. As stated in the classics, forcing oneself to lift heavy objects and then entering water, or sitting for a long time on damp ground, injures the Kidney; this is merely one aspect of how the Kidney can be injured.
To treat Kidney Labor with deficiency and damage, accompanied by alternating chills and fever, tinnitus, propensity to salivate, frequent yawning, and weakness and flaccidity of the waist and legs, use the Sheep Kidney Decoction (Yang Shen Tang):
