Commentary: The Kidney channel belongs to the Foot-Shaoyin (Lesser Yin) meridian, and the Bladder channel belongs to the Foot-Taiyang (Greater Yang) meridian; they are exteriorly-interiorly related. The Kidney qi flourishes in winter, its image corresponds to Water, its pulse is deep (Chen), it nourishes bone marrow, it governs Jing (Essence) and Zhi (Willpower), its external manifestation is the ears, its vocalization is groaning, its odor is putrid, its taste is salty, its fluid is saliva, its color is black, and its Qi mechanism is characterized by storage and closure; therefore, one should go to bed early and rise late, waiting until sunlight appears. One should avoid cold and seek warmth, not disturbing Yang Qi; this is the way of nourishing the storage function in accordance with winter. If one violates the Qi of winter storage, the Shaoyin will fail to store, and Kidney Qi will sink alone. Its symptoms include fullness and distension in the lower abdomen. If urine is yellow-red, with dribbling after urination, frequent and painful, this indicates a Kidney Excess syndrome. If there is obstruction of Guan-Ge (blockage of urination and defecation), stiffness and rigidity of the waist and back, reduced food intake, and fatigue and weakness of Qi, this indicates a Kidney Deficiency syndrome; deficiency should be treated with tonification. Excess should be treated with purgation. The goal is to restore balance; this is the general principle of treatment.
Commentary: The Kidney governs water metabolism and receives the essence from the five Zang and six Fu organs to store it. If Kidney Qi is weak, the Foot-Shaoyin meridian becomes obstructed, thus its symptoms manifest as soreness and pain in the waist and back. Urine may slip uncontrollably, there may be pain in the umbilical and abdominal region, tinnitus, cold limbs, dry bones and cold marrow, weakness in the calves making prolonged standing impossible. Therefore, it is said that if the Yin pulse at the Chi position on the left wrist, beyond Shenmen, is deficient, it indicates a disease of the Shaoyin meridian, leading to chest stuffiness and a heavy sensation below. Swelling of the feet that cannot be pressed occurs because the Foot-Shaoyin is the meridian of the Kidney.
