Commentary states: Water-fluids (abnormal accumulation of fluids in the body) cannot be transported without ascending and descending movements, nor can they be resolved without Yang Qi. The cause of excessive salivation due to Kidney deficiency is that the Kidney storehouse lacks essence and Qi, Yang Qi is weak and minute, and Yin-cold coagulates and stagnates between the chest and diaphragm. Unable to resolve water-fluids, they overflow upwards to the teeth and gums, hence the preference for spitting saliva.
