Commentary: The Bladder is the official of the "Zhou Du" (a term referring to the gathering place of fluids), where body fluids are stored. They can be excreted only after Qi transformation. Located in the Lower Jiao, it forms an interior-exterior relationship with the Kidney. It is responsible for separating the clear from the turbid, governing excretion without receiving, and if the Qi of the Zang-Fu organs is deficient, or cold and heat are imbalanced, causing Qi to fail to transform and the water pathways to become obstructed, then the disease of Lin Syndrome (dysuria) occurs. The manifestations of various types of Lin generally stem from Kidney Qi deficiency and Heat in the Bladder; only Cold Lin is different. Those skilled in treating this condition should examine it carefully.
Commentary: Acute Lin (Sudden onset of dysuria) arises from Heat in the Lower Jiao transmitting to the Bladder. Its symptoms include sudden urgency and pain in the lower abdomen, and frequent, difficult, painful urination, hence it is called Acute Lin. This is because the Lower Jiao is located below the navel, at the upper opening of the Bladder, governing the separation of clear and turbid, and excretion rather than reception, serving for conduction. Now that Heat resides in the Lower Jiao, the disease presents thusly.
