Commentary states: The *I Ching* (Book of Changes) says, "Among all things that shake the myriad entities, none is more rapid than wind." Wind acts with a blowing and inspiring force, entering easily like the Xun trigram (Wind/Wood). It causes withered things to flourish and shells to split, accomplishing the work of creation. Indeed, this lies in its nature. However, wind is divided among the four seasons and occupies the eight directions. If it conforms to its proper time, it is considered correct Qi (Vital Energy); if it does not follow its proper direction, it becomes pathogenic Qi (Evil Qi). Humans, as the spirit of all things, can perceive this. Observing the day of Winter Solstice, wind coming from the south must be called "robber wind" (Zei Feng), and other cases can be inferred by analogy. When the pathogen is shallow, it remains in the skin and muscles; when deep, it reaches the bone marrow. How much more so in a sudden moment, which is truly terrifying. There are indeed cases where treatment cannot keep pace, because the mechanism of disaster hides in subtleties, beyond the foresight of ordinary people. Once manifested, even the wise cannot manage the aftermath well. Therefore, the sages of antiquity taught their subjects to call it "empty evil and robber wind" and to avoid it at the appropriate time. This represents the ultimate intention of seeking fortune and avoiding disaster. Otherwise, why would it be said that "wind is the beginning of a hundred diseases," "wind is the chief of a hundred diseases," and "wind moves swiftly and changes frequently"?
Commentary states: When pathogenic wind attacks humans, if contracted on Jia or Yi days in Spring, it is called Liver Wind. If contracted on Bing or Ding days in Summer, it is called Heart Wind. If contracted on Wu or Ji days in Late Summer, it is called Spleen Wind. If contracted on Geng or Xin days in Autumn, it is called Lung Wind. If contracted on Ren or Gui days in Winter, it is called Kidney Wind. If it strikes the Shu points (Back-Shu points) of the Zang-Fu organs, treatment should follow the respective syndromes.
Formula for Lingbao Dan to Treat Various Apoplexies: From childhood to old age, humans mostly contract diseases due to wind. This may result from overeating, fasting, thirst without drinking, excessive drinking, injury from the five flavors, exposure to heat and wind, extreme cold near fire, exposure to cold and dampness, puncture wounds to the skin, blunt trauma to limbs, irregular lifestyle, or excessive desires. Consequently, wind qi flows into various orifices, or lodges on one side, causing paralysis of the limbs, slurred speech, pain reaching the bone marrow, numbness affecting the skin, itching like insects crawling, hardness like iron or stone, excessive phlegm and drowsiness, forgetfulness and irritability, obstruction of blood vessels, dry and emaciated flesh, prolonged bedridden state requiring assistance to rise, slurred speech and facial edema, and mental exhaustion. These are all symptoms. If unresolved for years, with joints unable to move, taking ten to twenty pills according to the method will be effective. In cases of sudden death from apoplexy, if the heart area is still warm, take five pills, mix with vinegar, and rub over the navel for over a thousand times. Warmth should gradually spread from the navel. Once the eyes open, grind ten pills with hot vinegar and swallow. Life returns upon ingestion. Regardless of severity or duration, first administer San Qian Tongzhong San (Three-Qian Middle-Unblocking Powder) mixed with tea (3 qian). Shortly after, give hot tea to induce bowel movements (one to two times). Then, decoct Jiang Dou Tang (Ginger and Bean Decoction) to take three pills. Have another person use warm hands to massage the affected area repeatedly. After warmth penetrates, one should feel something like fire reaching the disease site. For wind diseases lasting one to two hundred days or within a year, where the patient cannot get out of bed, take three pills per dose. After ten doses, walking ability returns. For severe cases, take five pills every other day after each bowel movement. Stop for three to five days, then induce bowel movement again. Do not exceed thirty pills, and recovery will be normal. For traumatic injuries causing pain on cloudy days and immobility for many years, take five to seven doses. Frequent use ensures lingering medicinal power after disease resolution. The formula follows.
