Discourse states: Fengjing (Wind Spasm) is caused by wind pathogen damaging the Taiyang Meridian (Taiyang Channel), compounded by cold and dampness. The manifestations include trismus (lockjaw) with inability to open the mouth, and rigidity of the waist and back resembling epileptic seizures. This occurs because wind pathogen invades the meridians internally, causing stagnation and sluggish flow of Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) Qi, leading to tension and spasm of sinews and vessels. Consequently, trismus occurs, and sudden collapse with loss of consciousness may happen. Upon reaching the peak of an attack, the patient typically regains consciousness.
Treatment for Fengjing characterized by body stiffness like a board and generalized rigidity: Tianma Decoction (Gastrodia Decoction).
Ingredients: Gastrodiae Rhizoma (Tianma, 天麻) half tael; Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) de-rooted; Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix); Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) de-barked; Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, 白术); Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) de-jointed, decocted first, scum removed, dried.
Preparation: The above eight herbs are chopped like hemp seeds. Each dose consists of five qianbi (approx. 15-20g depending on era/measure), boiled in two zhan (approx. 400ml) of water with one date-sized piece of crushed Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, 生姜). Decoct until one zhan remains, filter dregs, add half a zhan of wine, boil once more, and take warm. After administration, drink thin ginger porridge to induce sweating. Administer twice daily.
Treatment for Fengjing with trismus, inability to open mouth, rigidity of body and back, and seizure-like episodes: Xuming Decoction (Life-Continuing Decoction).
Ingredients: Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) de-rooted and jointed, decocted first, scum removed, dried; Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix) de-rooted, each 1.5 liang; Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma); Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) chopped, each half liang; Cornu Saigae Tataricae (Lingyangjiao, 羚羊角).
Preparation: The above eight herbs are cut into small pieces. Each dose consists of six qianbi, soaked in two zhan of water overnight. Decoct next morning until one zhan remains, filter dregs, and take warm. Keep covered to avoid external wind. From after the Spring Equinox onwards, taking two or three doses regularly can prevent epidemic cold damage and various wind-pathogen diseases.
Treatment for Fengjing with trismus, aphasia, limb rigidity, and unclear consciousness: Gancao Decoction (Licorice Decoction).
Ingredients: Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) roasted and chopped; Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) de-rooted, each 1.1 liang; Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) half liang; Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) de-bristled, one liang; Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) roasted and cracked.
Preparation: The above five herbs are chopped like hemp seeds. Each dose consists of four qianbi, boiled in one and a half zhan of water with one he of juice from Rehmanniae Radix (Dihuang, 地黄). Decoct until eight-tenths remain, filter dregs. Then add half a he of Jingli (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia Succus) and half a he of Zhuli (Bambusae Caulis Succus), boil three times, and take warm. Administer once day and once night.
Treatment for Fengjing with trismus, aphasia, and body rigidity: Fuzi Decoction (Prepared Aconite Decoction).
Ingredients: Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) roasted, skin and navel removed, one piece; Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) de-rooted; Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) de-bristled; Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) de-barked, each two liang.
Preparation: The above four herbs are chopped like hemp seeds. Each dose consists of five qianbi, boiled in two zhan of water until one zhan remains. Add one he of Zhuli (Bambusae Caulis Succus), boil three more times, filter dregs, and take warm. Take on an empty stomach before meals, twice daily.
Treatment for Fengjing with body rigidity, trismus, and unconsciousness: Mahuang Decoction (Ephedra Decoction).
Ingredients: Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) de-jointed, decocted first, scum removed, dried, two liang; Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) roasted and chopped; Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 当归) dried; Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩) de-blackened, each one fen; Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao, 石膏) ten pieces; Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata).
Preparation: The above ten herbs are chopped like hemp seeds. Each dose consists of five qianbi, boiled in two zhan of water until one zhan remains, filter dregs. Add half a he of Jingli (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia Succus), boil three to five times, and take warm. Administer twice daily and once at night.
