Discourse states: Hongxiangjiao (a disease characterized by swelling and heaviness of the lower legs and weakness) causing obstruction of urination and defecation results from wind-dampness qi clashing in the feet and knees, attacking upwards to the chest and abdomen, filling the hypochondriac region. Ying and Wei qi become obstructed, and Sanjiao qi rises but does not descend. Consequently, the functions of transmission and transformation fail, leading to the inability to pass stool and urine. Generally, when Kidney qi undergoes Qi Hua (Qi transformation), the two yin openings (urethra and anus) become unobstructed, and the feet and knees are the external manifestations of the Kidney. Now, with Hongxiangjiao attacking upwards, Kidney qi cannot transform; since Kidney qi fails to transform, this is why urination and defecation are obstructed.
To treat Wind-Toxin Hongxiangjiao with obstruction of urination and defecation. Binglang Wan (Areca Nut Pill) Formula:
Binglang (Arecae Semen, crushed) Qian Niu Zi (Pharbitidis Semen, stir-fried, 5 liang each) Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) Roudoukou (Myristicae Semen, shell removed) Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, coarse bark removed) Baiziren (Biotae Semen, stir-fried) Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, rhizome head removed) Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, sliced and stir-fried) Qingju Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride, albedo removed and stir-fried) Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) Chi Fuling (Poria cum Radio, black skin removed, 0.5 liang each) Chen Qu (Fermented Wheat Mass, stir-fried, 3 fen)
The above thirteen ingredients are pounded, sifted into powder, and mixed with refined honey to form pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds. Take 25 pills per dose, administered on an empty stomach and before sleep with Ginger Decoction. The dosage should be adjusted until bowel movement becomes free. Adjust the amount of Qian Niu Zi according to the patient's deficiency or excess condition.

The above eleven ingredients are coarsely pounded and sieved. Take 3 qianbi (approx. 4.5g) per dose, add one zhan (approx. 200ml) of water, one jujube-sized piece of fresh ginger cut thickly, and two cun (approx. 6cm) of scallion white including roots. For sudden wind-pain in legs and knees, inability to walk, dry mouth, and rough tongue in men, administer only with Doulin Jiu. Take twice daily on an empty stomach and at midday. For Dry Hongxiangjiao attack with painful legs and knees, soreness in waist and legs, mental restlessness, thirst, vomiting upon seeing food/medicine, sweating, panting—this is Dry Hongxiangjiao attacking the Heart. For men with limb stiffness, back pain, and mental restlessness, this indicates impending Wind-Toxin; administer with warm wine. For men with nasal congestion, deafness, heavy and stagnant waist and legs, this is Kidney Wind-Toxin Qi; administer with Scallion-Wine. For women with chaotic Blood-Qi and stabbing heart pain nearing death, administer with Danggui Decoction-Wine.
