To treat men suffering from visual dimness due to wind deficiency, scanty essence and qi, and infertility, this is a formula for tonifying deficiencies.
Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi), Gypsum Fibrosum powder (Zhongru Fen), Viticis Fructus (Mujingzi), Cassiae Semen (Tusizi), Plantaginis Semen (Cheqianzi), Lepidii Semen (Tinglizi), Dendrobii Caulis (Shihu), Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (Gan Dihuang), Dioscoreae Rhizoma (Shuyu), Eucommiae Cortex (Duzhong), Cervi Cornu Pantotrichum (Lurong), Polygalae Radix (Yuanzhi) (each 8 zhu); Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata (Fuzi, processed), Cnidii Fructus (Shechuangzi), Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong) (each 6 zhu); Corni Fructus (Shanzhuyu), Aconiti Radix (Tianxiong), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Poria (Fuling), Astragali Radix (Huangqi), Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxi) (each 3 zhu); Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guixin) (10 zhu); Cistanches Herba (Rongrong) (10 zhu); Morindae Officinalis Radix (Bajitian) (12 zhu).
The above twenty-four ingredients are crushed, sifted, and taken with wine, one fangcun bi (a square-inch measure) per dose, twice daily. If ineffective, increase to two fangcun bi, stopping when the desired effect is achieved. Adhere to general dietary and lifestyle restrictions for herbal medicine. Those who cannot consume alcohol may take honey-pilled forms instead.
(Another prescription adds Rubi Fructus (Fupenzi) 8 zhu; the method for seeking offspring is based on the subsequent section on sexual arts.)
To treat women who have never given birth since birth, or who have been infertile for thirty years after ceasing menstruation.
Natrii Sulfas (Puxiao), Moutan Cortex (Mudan), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang), Persicae Semen (Taoren, raw, each 3 zhu); Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin), Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Nongpu), Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Paeoniae Radix Rubra (Chishao), Poria (Fuling).
The above eighteen ingredients are chopped, decocted together in five sheng of clear wine and five sheng of water, reduced to three sheng. Take four times daily: three times during the day and once at night. Each dose should be spaced by three shichen (two-hour periods). Continue as usual, cover with blankets to induce slight sweating. If sweating does not occur, use a fire basket for warmth in winter. This will inevitably expel accumulated blood and cold red pus, resembling the juice of adzuki beans, caused by such foul matter in the uterus. It may also cause lower abdominal pain on cloudy days or irregular menstruation due to cold blood preventing conception. If the foul matter is expelled adequately but the patient becomes weak and exhausted, unable to tolerate further doses, stopping after two or three doses is acceptable. If severe chest oppression occurs, consuming vinegar-rice and cold water can alleviate it immediately. However, to ensure complete expulsion of foul matter and maximize efficacy, enduring the full course is best. After one day, apply suppository medication. (Qianjin Yifang omits Jiegeng and Gancao).
For treating total infertility and cessation of menstruation, after taking the aforementioned Puxiao Decoction, use the following vaginal suppository formula:
Gleditsiae Spina (Zaojia, roasted), Corni Fructus (Shanzhuyu; Qianjin Yifang uses Benincasa Fructus/Ku Hu), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui) (each 1 liang); Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin), Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Ganjiang) (each 2 liang); Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang).
The above ten ingredients are powdered, placed in a silk bag, sized like a finger and three inches long, filled with the medicine, and inserted into the vagina. Sit or lie down as comfortable, avoid rapid walking. Remove before urination and insert a new one. Use once daily. It will inevitably discharge yellow-green cold fluid; stop when the fluid is exhausted. At this point, intercourse may lead to natural conception. If no pathological discharge is seen, it may be used for up to ten days. (Another version includes Lepidii Semen/Tingli and Realgar/Pishuang, half liang each). This medication is used to guide out residual cold foul matter that the Puxiao Decoction might not fully expel. On cold, cloudy days without pain, suppositories are unnecessary. Some use salt as a suppository, but this formula is superior. After taking the Puxiao Decoction and inserting the suppository, wait more than a day before taking Zishui Mudong Wan.
