The discussion states: Whenever the indications for acupoints are recorded, the point names are listed above and the symptoms below. Sometimes one disease corresponds to dozens of points, or several diseases share a single point; in all cases, the treatment method must be carefully considered according to the specific situation at hand and applied accordingly. For conditions requiring acupuncture, needle insertion should be used to apply tonification or sedation techniques. For conditions not suitable for needling, moxibustion should be performed directly. However, the general principle of moxibustion is that as long as there are no contraindications for needling at the specific point, one should first perform white needle (plain needle) manipulation or warm needle therapy, and then apply moxibustion; this constitutes the practice of an excellent physician. Regarding the disease known as "Hongjiao" (foot swelling, numbness, and pain), it is most suitable for needle treatment. If one uses needles but not moxibustion, or moxibustion but not needles, neither constitutes the practice of an excellent physician. Using both acupuncture/moxibustion and herbal medicine, or using only herbal medicine without acupuncture/moxibustion, also does not constitute the practice of an excellent physician. It is merely regrettable that few people in rural areas understand acupuncture; therefore, students of medicine must deeply understand and master acupuncture techniques. Both burning needle (hot needle) and white needle (plain needle) methods must be thoroughly understood. Knowing both acupuncture and herbal medicine certainly makes one an excellent physician.
