Han Guang was an expert in treating Ding swellings (carbuncles/furuncles). In the early Zhen Guan era, Xu Shijun (Magistrate) of Quzhou sought out and obtained this prescription.
Burn one dan (approx. 60 kg) of mugwort (Artemisia argyi) to ash, leach the juice using a bamboo tube, mix one or two he (approx. 20-40 ml) with calcined stone (dust), blending it into a consistency like wheat paste. Puncture the sore with a needle until pain is felt, then apply the mixture. After three applications, the root of the lesion will naturally detach. This method is extremely effective and excellent. During the Zhen Guan era, it was used to treat over thirty people, all of whom recovered. Therefore, it is recorded here.
Fish-umbilicus Ding sores resemble burns from fresh fire needles: the surrounding area is red while the center is black. They can be punctured with a needle; if the patient feels no pain, death may ensue. The treatment prescription is as follows:
Mix equal parts of ash from fish heads collected in the twelfth lunar month and ash from human hair. Blend with chicken manure and apply to the affected area. Whether this sore shows efficacy or not determines life or death. (The *Waitai Miyao* does not use hair ash, but instead uses egg white for application).
Another prescription: Apply cold-food maltose (han shi tang); this is beneficial. If the lesion becomes hard, burn it to ash and apply the powder; recovery will follow.
Prescription for treating fish-umbilicus sores where the head is white, swollen, painful, and unbearable:
First, puncture the four sides of the sore with a needle. Crush white lettuce (Lactuca sativa) to extract juice, and drip it into the wound hole.
Another prescription: Apply water badger feces; this is highly effective.
Prescription for treating red-root Ding sores:
Roast white starch (bai fen) until black, blend with honey, and apply; this is beneficial.
Another prescription: Use soil from new rat burrows, mix with water, and apply. Change when it cools or heats up.
Another prescription: Crush horse teeth into powder, mix with lard rendered in the twelfth lunar month, and apply; the root will be extracted. Using ash after burning is also acceptable.
Prescription for treating Ding sores caused by external factors:
Radish root (Brassica rapa var. rapifera) and rusted iron (sheng tie yi, i.e., iron oxide) in equal parts.
Crush the above two ingredients together. Make a hole in the sore with a large needle. Shape the radish root to the size of a needle, coat it with the previously mentioned rusted iron, insert it into the hole, and cover with the crushed mixture. Seal the top. Apply a quantity equivalent to a square-inch spoonful, coated on red silk fabric, and patch it. Replace when pus discharges. Within a short time, the root will be extracted, and immediate recovery will occur. Avoid greasy, raw/cold, slippery/vinegary, five pungent spices, stale/odorous foods, and sticky foods.
Another prescription: Puncture the head of the sore and its surroundings to drain all fluids. Crush raw chestnut kernels and apply them. Surround the sore with flour paste to prevent leakage. From morning to noon, the root will be extracted.
Another prescription: Surround the sore with flour paste as before. Prick the sore randomly with a needle. Boil vinegar in a copper vessel until bubbling, pour it into the flour enclosure (capacity of one cup), and replace when cool. After three times, the root will emerge.
Another prescription: Take snake skin shed (she tui pi) the size of a chicken egg. Boil in four sheng (approx. 8 liters) of water for three to four boils. Strain the dregs and consume the liquid in one dose; immediate recovery will follow.
Another prescription: Burn snake skin shed to ash, mix with egg white, and apply; recovery will follow.
Another prescription: Crush cocklebur seedling (Cang Er miao) shoots, extract one to two sheng of juice, and drink it. Apply the dregs to the affected area; immediate recovery will follow.
