Treats Shanghan (Cold Damage) and Zhongfeng (Wind Strike) with a floating pulse, alternating fever and chills, spontaneous sweating, aversion to wind, stiffness of the head and neck, nasal congestion with dry retching. Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) is the primary prescription. Adjust according to the disease as follows:
Boil one dou (approx. 10 liters) of spring water until reduced to four sheng (approx. 4 liters). Divide into three doses, taking one sheng per dose, three times daily. For those with spontaneous sweating, remove Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) and add one Paozhi Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root). For thirst, remove Guizhi and add three liang of Gualougen (Trichosanthes Root). For diarrhea, remove Shaoyao (White Peony Root) and Guizhi, and add three liang of Ganjiang (Dried Ginger) and one Paozhi Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root). For palpitations in the epigastrium, remove Shaoyao and add four liang of Fuling (Poria). For deficiency fatigue with abdominal urgency and pain, Zhengyang Dantan (Positive Yang Morning Tan Decoction) is indicated. Boil to obtain two sheng, add half a jin of Jiaoyi (Maltose), heat again, and take in divided doses. If the pulse is floating and tight with fever, this formula should not be used.
Formula for treating Shanghan (Cold Damage) with fever and body pain:
Gegen (Kudzu Root) (four liang), Fuling (Poria) (three liang), Mahuang (Ephedra Herb), Muli (Oyster Shell), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) (two liang each), Gancao (Licorice Root) (one liang).
The above six herbs are cut into small pieces. Boil in eight sheng of water until reduced to three sheng. Divide into three doses. After the second dose, if sweating occurs, stop medication once sweat flows freely. (Note: *Gujin Luyan* does not include Shengjiang or Gancao.)
Formula for treating Shanghan (Cold Damage) and Wenbing (Warm Disease):
Gegen (Kudzu Root) (four liang), Mahuang (Ephedra Herb) (one liang), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Shaoyao (White Peony Root), Gancao (Licorice Root) (two liang each), Dazao (Jujube Fruit) (twelve fruits).
The above six herbs are cut into small pieces. Boil in one dou of water until reduced to three sheng. Drink one sheng per dose, three times daily. If the condition persists after three to four days and the pulse is floating, it is appropriate to re-administer the dose to induce sweating. If the pulse is deep and solid, it is appropriate to use Chi Wan (Fermented Soybean Pill) to purge the interior. (Note: *Yannian Milu* includes one liang of Guixin [Cinnamon Bark].)
Formula for treating epidemic Qi Shanghan (Cold Damage) that has not resolved within three days:
Xiangchi (Prepared Fermented Soybean) (one dou, wrapped in silk cloth), Congbai (Green Onion White) (cut, one sheng), Tongzi Xiaonian (Child’s Urine) (three sheng).
The above three ingredients are first boiled together until their flavors meld. Then, add the child’s urine and boil until reduced to two sheng. Divide into two doses, take slowly, cover with blankets to induce sweating. This is highly effective.
Formula for treating Shanghan (Cold Damage), seasonal warm epidemics, presenting with headache, high fever, and a full/surging pulse, in the initial one or two days:
Zhusha (Cinnabar) (one liang), finely powdered. Boil in one dou of water until reduced to one sheng. Take in one single dose, cover with blankets to induce sweating.
