Formula for treating residual heat accumulation in the interior causing irritability and thirst after Shanghan (Cold Damage).
Qixiangzi (Herba Celosiae, 5 liang) Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae, 1 liang) Gualualgen (Radix Trichosanthis, 1 liang) Kushen (Radix Sophorae Flavescentis, 1 liang) Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri, 2 liang) Longdan (Radix Gentianae, 3 liang) Zhiziren (Semen Gossypii Herbacei Preparatum, 3 liang) Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis, 3 liang)
Grind the above eight herbs into powder, mix with honey to make pills the size of wu zi (Christ's thorn jasmine seeds). Take seven pills before meals, three times a day. If ineffective, gradually increase the dosage. (Another version states to use maltose syrup to form pills.)
For treating Shanghan-heat disease lasting more than ten days, where sweating fails to resolve the pathogen, or various heat pathogens persist after vomiting and purging, as well as persistent dysentery and eruption of macules, this formula is applicable.
Daqing (Cortex Isatidis, 4 liang) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 2 liang) Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini, 2 liang) Douchi (Fructus Sojae Preparatus, 1 sheng)
Chop the above four ingredients, decoct in eight sheng of water until reduced to three sheng. Strain the dregs, boil again for three boils, remove Douchi, add Ejiao and stir until dissolved. Take one sheng at once, three times a day. To ensure complete recovery and elimination of lingering pathogens, maintain sufficient therapeutic potency; drink water if thirsty. This formula clears heat and stops vomiting and diarrhea; it is non-toxic. Shenshi Formula treats Laofu (relapse due to overexertion). (Zhouhou Beiji Fang contains Chishizhi, 3 liang. Hu Qian's Jiyan Fang is identical.)
Formula for treating post-Shanghan condition characterized by morning and evening fever resembling malaria:
Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae, 2 liang) Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae, 1 liang) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 1 liang) Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba, 1 liang) Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae, 1 liang) Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi, 1 liang)
Chop the above six ingredients, decoct in seven sheng of water until reduced to two and a half sheng. Take five he per dose, three times a day. After taking the medicine, cover warmly to induce slight sweating. If there is irritability and insomnia, and the patient desires water, provide small amounts of water frequently until the Stomach Qi harmonizes and the condition resolves.
At the onset of illness, symptoms may include headache, alternating chills and fever, shivering with a desire to seek warmth near fire, stiffness of the waist and back, and a flushed face resembling intoxication. These occur within the first one or two days of initial Shanghan. Apply intense moxibustion to three points below the heart. The first point is one cun below the heart, named Jueque (CV14); the second point is two cun below, named Shangwan (CV13); the third point is three cun below, named Weiwuan (CV12). Moxibustion: 50 moxa cones per point. Since body sizes vary, measurements may differ; use a string to measure according to individual proportions for best results. Measure from the Xintou bone (Jiuwei, CV15) to the umbilicus, fold the string in half; the end of the folded string indicates Weiwuan. Fold the half-string again into two parts; measuring one part upward from Weiwuan locates Shangwan. Measuring another part upward from Shangwan locates Jueque. Adults: 50 moxa cones; Children: 3 moxa cones, adjusted according to age and discretion.
If the illness has persisted for three to four days, it is advisable to first apply moxibustion to twenty cones on the upper chest. Measure from the tip of the nose straight up to the hairline, fold the string in half and discard half. Insert the remaining length into the hairline from the forehead; the end of the string indicates Tiancong (an extra point). Also moxa both temples (Taiyang), both Fengchi (GB20), Liver Shu (BL18) with 100 cones, other locations with 20 cones each, and Taichong (LR3) with 30 cones. This is highly effective.
