Formulas for treating carbuncles, sores, and various malignant ulcers of the back (Fabei), to remove necrotic tissue.
Moschus (She Xiang), Radix Scutellariae (Huang Qin - *Note: Text says 'Ru' which is often interpreted as Huang Qin or similar in this context, but strictly 'Ru' refers to a specific herb, here translated as Ru*), Realgar (Xiong Huang), Alumen (Fan Shi) (each 1 liang).
The above four ingredients are processed, ground into powder, and mixed with suet (Zhu Gao) to form a paste for topical application. Discontinue use when all necrotic tissue has been removed, then apply the flesh-regenerating ointment.
Radix Polygoni Multiflori Preparata? No, Da Huang (Rhubarb Rhizome), Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuan Xiong), Herba Pogostemonis (Mang Cao), Concha Margaritifera (Zhen Zhu), Orpiment (Ci Huang), Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata? No, Fuzi (Aconite Root, used raw, each 1 liang), Radix Ampelopsisis (Bai Lian), Alumen (Fan Shi), Radix Scutellariae (Huang Qin), Ru (each 2 liang), Realgar (Xiong Huang) (0.5 liang).
The above eleven ingredients are chopped. Boil in 1.5 sheng of suet for five or six boils. Strain out the dregs, add powdered Ru and Alumen, mix well, and apply to the wound. Stop when all necrotic tissue is removed.
Formula for treating swelling where necrotic tissue remains: Ash of Asparagus Fern (Shuo Li Hui), Calcined Stone (Duan Shi) (as recorded in *Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang* as White Charcoal Ash).
The above two ingredients are leached to extract their juices, combined, and boiled down into a paste. Apply the paste; it eats away necrotic tissue and also removes black moles. This preparation loses efficacy if kept for more than ten days.
Another formula: Boil fresh juice of Rehmannia Root (Sheng Di Huang) until it becomes gelatinous, form into cakes, and apply topically. Do this four to five times daily.
Formula for Powder to Eat Necrotic Tissue (Shi E Rou San).
Lacca (Qi Tou), Ru, Sulfur (Liu Huang), Cinnabar (Dan Sha), Moschus (She Xiang), Vitriol of Horse Tooth (Ma Chi Fan), Realgar (Xiong Huang), Orpiment (Ci Huang), White Alum (Bai Fan) (each 2 liang).
The above eight ingredients are processed, ground into powder, and applied to dust the wound, allowing it to be sucked in to consume necrotic tissue. (*Qian Jin Yi Fang* suggests applying as a patch, omitting Bai Fan and Ci Huang, adding Veratrum Nigrum (Li Lu). It states: it can also be made into an ointment for application. Note that the chapter on treating carbuncles in *Qian Jin Yi Fang* does not list Cinnabar. *Guang Ji Fang* treats suppurating carbuncles where purple granulation tissue persists and does not resolve; sprinkle this powder into the wound or use it for cauterization).
Ru, Alumen (Fan Shi), Realgar (Xiong Huang), Sulfur (Liu Huang) (each 2 fen).
The above four ingredients are processed, ground into powder, and inserted into the wound. Stop when all necrotic tissue is removed. Be careful not to damage healthy tissue.
