According to the *Bing Yuan* (Pathogenesis), the "Three Worms" refer to Changchong (Ascaris lumbricoides, large roundworm), Chichong (Red worm), and Naochong (Pinworm). These are also included in the count of the "Nine Worms." Changchong is Ascaris lumbricoides; it is one chi long. When active, it causes vomiting of clear fluid; if it moves out, it causes heart pain; if it penetrates the heart, it leads to death. Chichong resembles raw meat; when active, it causes borborygmus (intestinal rumbling). Naochong is minute, resembling a vegetable worm.
**Formula from *Zhouhou Beiji Fang* for Treating the Three Worms:**
Cortex Evodiae Radicis (*Wuzhuyu*, specifically the root) [Select those growing eastward, about the thickness of a finger, one chi long] Trichosanthis Fructus (*Gualou*) [Four liang, sliced]
Crush the Cortex Evodiae Radicis finely, soak in one sheng of wine overnight. In the morning, squeeze out the juice and remove the dregs. Do not eat the previous night. In the morning, on an empty stomach, first consume some dried meat, then take the decoction all at once. For children, divide into three doses. This formula also treats Taenia saginata (Taenia, white tapeworm).
**Another Formula:**
Pound peach leaves, squeeze out the juice, and drink one sheng. (*Qianjin Yaofang* and *Jiyan Fang* record this same formula as drinking three he in the early morning.)
**Another Formula:**
Margarita Perla (*Zhenzhu*) [One liang, ground] Capillitium (*Luancha*) [Size of a chicken egg, burned to ash]
Mix the two ingredients in vinegar. Take on an empty stomach in the morning all at once until finished. (*Jiyan Fang* and *Fan Wang Fang* are identical; *Qianjin Yao* uses it for treating Pinworm.)
Furthermore, the so-called "Three Worms" refer to Changchong, Chichong, and Naochong. There are actually nine types, but Pinworm and Taenia saginata are commonly contracted by many people. Taenia saginata is caused by eating beef and drinking white wine... [Text fragment missing].
**White Peony Pill (*Bailian Wan*) from *Fan Wang Fang* for Treating the Three Worms:**
Ampelopsis Radix (*Bailian*) Sibiric Bistort Rhizome (*Yelangya*) Arundo Rhizoma (*Lu*) Peach Blossom (*Taohua*) Cyathulae Radix (*Guanzhong*) Tangerine Peel (*Juapi*) Myrabolana Fructus (*Wuyi*) [Each: three fen]
Pound and sieve the seven ingredients. Make pills with honey the size of small beans. Do not eat the previous night. In the morning, take one dose with jiangshui (fermented grain liquid). Food may be taken at noon. The worms will be expelled immediately. If a man suffers from abdominal distension and yellow complexion, desiring meat, taking this medicine will expel red worms resembling bamboo shoots, one chi long, with over a hundred heads and eyes, curing the disease. Another case: Xie Qiu from Jiujiang had an accumulation under the hypochondrium, large as... [Text fragment missing] ...with mouths, one hundred... [Text fragment missing].
**Bamboo Joint Pill (*Zhujie Wan*) for Treating the Three Worms:**
Burned Bamboo Joint (*Shao Zhujie*) Polyporus Umbellatus (*Leiyuan*) [Each: three fen] Tin Shavings (*Xixie*) [Two fen] Tangerine Peel (*Juapi*) [One and a half fen]
Pound and sieve the four ingredients. Make pills with honey the size of wetast seeds. Take eight pills per dose, three times daily.
**Xiongqiong Powder (*Xiongsan*) for Treating the Three Worms:**
Szechwan Lovage Rhizome (*Xiongyao*) Polyporus Umbellatus (*Leiyuan*) Platycodon Root (*Jiegeng*) Angelica Dahurica (*Baizhi*) [Each: four fen]
Pound the four ingredients into powder. Take one fangcunbi (square-inch measure) with honey, vinegar, or rice water, three times daily. Alternatively, make pills with honey the size of wetast seeds, swallow thirteen pills. The worms should be gradually expelled. If not fully expelled, take another dose. (From Volume 19)
**Emergency Formula (*Beiji Fang*) for Treating the Three Worms:**
Arundo Rhizoma (*Lu*) [Four liang, roasted] Dried Resin of Toxicodendron (*Ganxi*) [Two liang, processed] Evodia Fruit (*Wuzhuyu*) [Four liang]
Make the three ingredients into powder. Following the previous method, chew dried meat first, then take one fangcunbi with rice gruel broth, once daily. (*Zhouhou Beiji Fang* and *Fan Wang Fang* are identical.)
