The *Guangji Fang* formula for treating insufficient lactation in women.
Take four pig trotters, prepare them according to culinary methods, and decoct them in two dou (approx. 8 liters) of water until the volume reduces to one dou (approx. 4 liters). Remove the trotters. Add three liang (approx. 90 grams) each of *Trichosanthes root* (Tugua Gen), *Tongcao*, and *Radix Ephedrae* (Loulu) [Note: Loulu usually refers to Radix Rhapontici or similar, here kept as Loulu], decocting with their juices until six sheng (approx. 1.2 liters) remain. Strain the dregs. Add scallion whites and fermented soybeans (Chidou) according to standard procedure, add a small amount of millet, and cook into a thin scallion and soybean porridge. Consume this porridge. It is favorable if the body becomes slightly warm and slight sweating occurs after eating. If milk secretion has not yet commenced, administer three additional doses; this is highly effective. (Identical to Cui's formula, found in Volume III).
The *Qianjin Fang* formula for treating insufficient lactation, named Loulu Tang (Cistanche Decoction):
*Rhapontici Radix* (Loulu), *Akebiae Caulis* (Tongcao) (each 8 fen), *Concha Ostreae* (Zhongru) (4 fen), *Panicum miliaceum* (Shumi) (1 sheng).
Cut the above four ingredients. Soak the millet overnight, grind it, and extract three sheng (approx. 0.6 liters) of juice. Use this juice to decoct the herbs for three to four boils. Strain the dregs and drink as a beverage. (Identical to *Jingxin Lu*).
Another formula:
Powdered *Trichosanthes root* (Tugua Gen), taken with wine, half a qianbi (approx. 3-5 grams). Milk will flow like water on the same day. (Identical to Cui's formula).
Another single-herb formula for treating insufficient lactation, Shigao Tang (Gypsum Decoction):
Four liang (approx. 120 grams) of *Gypsum Fibrosum* (Shigao), finely ground. Decoct in two sheng (approx. 0.4 liters) of water for three boils. Take gradually in small amounts; finishing it within one day yields good results.
Another single-herb formula for treating insufficient lactation, Guijian Tang (Arrowwood Decoction):
Five liang (approx. 150 grams) of *Euonymi Ramulus* (Guijian). Decoct in six sheng (approx. 1.2 liters) of water until four sheng (approx. 0.8 liters) remain. Strain the dregs. Take eight he (approx. 160 ml) per dose, three times daily. Alternatively, calcine the herb to ash, powder it, and take one fangcunbi (approx. 3-5 grams) with water, three times daily.
Another formula for promoting lactation, Tongcao San (Akebia Powder):
*Akebiae Caulis* (Tongcao), *Concha Ostreae* (Zhongru) (finely ground).
Grind the above two ingredients into an equal-part powder. Take one fangcunbi (approx. 3-5 grams) with wheat gruel, three times daily. After one hundred days, one may be able to nurse two infants simultaneously.
Another formula, Maidong San (Ophiopogon Powder):
*Maidong* (Ophiopogonis Radix) (heart removed), *Concha Ostreae* (Zhongru) (finely ground), *Akebiae Caulis* (Tongcao), *Magnoliae Cortex*? No, Lishi (likely Magnesite or similar, here Lishi) (equal parts, finely ground).
Pulverize the above four ingredients into a powder. Take one fangcunbi (approx. 3-5 grams) with wine before and after meals, three times daily.
Another formula for promoting lactation, Loulu San (Rhapontici Powder):
*Rhapontici Radix* (Loulu) (2 fen), *Concha Ostreae* (Zhongru) (5 fen, finely ground), *Trichosanthis Fructus* (Gualou) (5 fen), *Trogoderma Larva* (Qicao) (3 fen, stir-fried).
Pulverize the above four ingredients into a powder. Take one fangcunbi (approx. 3-5 grams) with sugar water after meals, three times daily.
Another formula:
One coarse-cut pig trotter. Decoct in two dou (approx. 8 liters) of water until cooked. Drink the remaining five to six sheng (approx. 1-1.2 liters) of broth; this is very effective. (Identical to Cui's formula).
Another formula:
Two pig trotters (roasted and crushed), eight liang (approx. 240 grams) of *Akebiae Caulis* (Tongcao) (cut).
Soak the above two ingredients in one dou (approx. 4 liters) of clear wine. Drink gradually until finished. If milk does not come, prepare another batch. (Identical to Cui's formula).
Another formula:
One sheng (approx. 200 grams) of sliced *Trichosanthes root* (Gualou Gen). Decoct in four sheng (approx. 0.8 liters) of wine for three boils. Strain the dregs. Take half a sheng (approx. 0.1 liters), three times daily; this is effective. (Identical to Cui's formula).
Another formula:
One large green *Trichosanthes fruit* (Gualou). Cook thoroughly and mash. Decoct in one sheng (approx. 0.2 liters) of white wine until four sheng (approx. 0.8 liters) remain. Strain the dregs. Warm and drink one sheng (approx. 0.2 liters), three times daily. If no large ones are available, use two small ones. If no green ones are available, yellow ones are also acceptable. (Identical to Cui's formula).
Another formula:
Calcine carp heads to ash, take three finger-pinches (sanzhicuo) with wine.
Another formula:
Calcine dead mice to ash, take one fangcunbi (approx. 3-5 grams) with wine, three times daily. Milk will descend immediately. (All from Volume III).
Cui's formula for treating insufficient lactation:
Five liang (approx. 150 grams) of rat meat, six liang (approx. 180 grams) of mutton, eight liang (approx. 240 grams) of roe deer meat.
Cook these three meats together and consume them. Do not let the consumer know what they are eating. (From Volume X).
