Commentary states: The nature of Rushi (mineral-based tonics, such as Stalactite) is both slow-acting and rapid; it can drive out wind-cold, dispel summerheat-dampness, unblock meridians, and circulate the qi of food and drink. When there is a deficiency in Yin, it supplements the insufficiency; when Yang is excessive, it tends to flare up inflammation. If Yin is excessive and Yang is deficient, the two polarities become imbalanced, leading to heat rising to affect the Fu organs. This results in external heat obstruction, which is the submergence of extreme Yin. The pulse presents as floating and rapid in the Yang position, and submerged and deep in the Yin position. According to meridian theory, regulation naturally leads to smooth flow. If moxibustion is applied to the collateral vessels (Sunluo), blood vessels will flow rapidly; if completely suppressed, it contradicts the nature of the mineral stones. If regulated and assisted simultaneously, the exterior and interior will circulate uniformly. If mild symptoms occur, one may engage in moderate labor and massage; immediate treatment with medication is not advised. If the heat persists, other methods should be selected based on the situation to resolve the condition.
To treat alternating chills and fever, chest fullness, facial swelling, and vexing pain in the hands and feet, which are manifestations of Zhongru Shi (Stalactite) activation, Sheng Maidong Tang (Raw Ophiopogon Decoction) is appropriate.
Sheng Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix, 4 liang, heart removed) Chi (Fermented Soybean, 3 sheng, wrapped in silk) Congbai (Scallion White, cut, 0.5 jin)
The above three ingredients are boiled in 8 sheng of water until reduced to 3 sheng, then taken in divided doses. Body heat is due to guest heat (external pathogenic heat); one should gradually add clothing for warmth. Although it may seem like aversion to cold, adding clothes will bring comfort. Dietary restrictions follow standard protocols. This formula is very effective (identical to Qianjin Fang).
Another formula to suppress Dan Shi (Cinnabar and Stone mineral) activation (Applied by monks from Guoqing Temple, Tiantai Mountain):
Xingren (Apricot Kernel, 100 pieces, skin and tip removed)
The single ingredient is ground in 1 sheng of water in a plate, strained to extract all juice. Two sheng of white flour are kneaded with the apricot kernel juice to form dough. The dough is cooked in apricot kernel juice until thoroughly done. The patient eats an amount suitable for their constitution until finished. Then, several sheng of fine wine are boiled for over ten boils. After cooling slightly, the patient drinks an amount suitable for their constitution slowly. Cover with blankets and rest quietly. Initially, there may be chest stuffiness, but soon the limbs feel light and empty. One dose prevents recurrence for three years; highly effective.
Another formula to treat Rushi activation:
Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted) Mahuang (Ephedra Stem, nodes removed, each 1 liang)
The two ingredients are chopped, boiled in 3 sheng of water until reduced to half a sheng, mixed with half a sheng of clear wine. The patient should first undergo moxibustion near a fire until heat penetrates and sweating is desired. Take the medicine while hot until finished, cover with clothes, and lie down. Profuse sweating occurs shortly after, leading to recovery. (Identical to Qianjin Yi Fang)
Another formula for Rushi activation caused by eating spoiled grain or meat:
One must take Congchi Tang (Scallion and Fermented Soybean Decoction) slowly and carefully, five or six times, until recovered. (Identical to Qianjin Yi Fang)
Another formula for dietary injury:
Add Danggui (Angelica Sinensis, 1 liang) to Congchi Tang, boil, strain, and take in divided doses to recover. If not recovered, immediately take Lugen Tang (Reed Rhizome Decoction). (Identical to Qianjin Yi Fang)
If Anhe medicines have been taken but heat persists, this indicates minor triggering. If Congchi Tang fails to resolve it, take Lugen Tang Jieya Fang (Reed Rhizome Detoxifying Formula).
Lugen (Reed Rhizome) Diyü (Sanguisorba Root) Wujia Gen (Acanthopanacis Cortex, each 1 liang)
Chop the three ingredients, boil in 3 sheng of water until reduced to 1 sheng, and take to resolve the condition. (Identical to Qianjin Yi Fang)
If contracted seasonal epidemic qi, causing cold-heat imbalance that triggers Rushi, these are caused by cold and heat, resembling malaria. Long-term neglect damages life. Even with decoctions, recovery is difficult. It is advisable to use Shengshu Tang Yu (Hot and Cold Bath Decoction).
Use a large vessel for the bath. If too hot, add a little cold water. Sit in the water without moving. Soon, all joints open, and cold-heat qi exits through pores, turning into sweat. If chest heat/stuffiness occurs, take a small amount of hot soup to settle it. Stay in the bath for a long time, then exit, cover with blankets, and sleep. Recovery is sudden. For severe cases, two or three sessions suffice. (Identical to Qianjin Yi Fang)
Another formula to resolve all Stone activations (HT Method):
Hudou (Faba Bean, half sheng)
Pound and grind the single ingredient, mix with 8 ge of water, strain, and drink to recover. Weak patients take half sheng; average patients adjust according to judgment.
Another Dahuang Wan (Rhubarb Pill) Formula:
Dahuang (Rhubarb Root, 5 liang, pounded to powder) Dama Zi (Hemp Seed, 5 liang, fried until not burnt, cooled, winnowed to remove skins, kernels ground into paste)
Mix the two ingredients evenly, bind with honey into pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take 10–20 pills with warm water. Stop when bowel movement is unobstructed. This formula is excellent for unblocking Yang stagnation and constipation; highly effective. Follow standard dietary restrictions.
Huato Qi Tang (Huato Shepherd's Purse Decoction), for sudden onset of Stone toxicity: Chills/shivering, variable appetite. If triggered by Zhi Yanshi (Fluorspar), symptoms include heat, stuffiness, drowsiness, lethargy, weakness, or chills. These arise from disharmony of Zang-Fu qi. Treatment formula:
Qini (Adenophorae Radix, 4 liang) Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted) Lanzi (Isatidis Semen, each 1 liang) Fuling (Poria, Huangqin (Scutellaria Root, each 2 liang) Manjingzi (Brassicae Napus Seed, 1 sheng) Renshen (Ginseng Root, 1 liang)
Chop the eight ingredients. Boil Manjingzi in 1 dou of water until reduced to 8 sheng. Strain, add remaining herbs, boil until reduced to 3 sheng. Strain and divide into three doses daily. Increase Renshen for weakness. If Qi rebels upward, add Fuling and Qini (each 1 liang); very effective. (Qianjin Yi Fang notes: Increase Renshen and decrease Huangqin for cold body; increase Fuling and add Qini for Qi rebellion)
Ying Yangzhou Suode Yigu Dancong Bai Tang Yao (Single Scallion White Decoction obtained from Yangzhou), for chronic internal stagnation recurring over years:
Congbai (Scallion White, 1 jin, cut)
Boil the single ingredient in 5 sheng of water until reduced to 2.5 sheng. Strain and drink completely. If unresolved, prepare again. Three doses cure.
