The *Guangji* formula treats postpartum blood syncope (postpartum dizziness and fainting), chest oppression, loss of consciousness, delirious speech, and impending collapse of vital energy.
Lotus leaf (2 pieces, roasted) Puhuang (Corydellis Rhizoma, 1 liang) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 2 liang, roasted) Baimi (White honey, 1 spoon) Dihuangzhi (Rehmanniae Juice, half sheng)
Cut the above five ingredients. Boil in three sheng of water until reduced to one sheng. Strain to remove dregs. Add Puhuang, honey, and Dihuangzhi. Take warm; recovery will be immediate.
Another formula for postpartum chest oppression, blood qi rushing upward causing blood syncope: Lingyangjiao San (Antelope Horn Powder).
Take one piece of Antelope horn (Lingyangjiao), burn it into ash powder. Administer with flowing water from the east using a measure of one cun bi. If not cured, administer again until cured.
Emergency formula for postpartum blood syncope, chest oppression, and extreme exhaustion.
Remove the skin of a crucian carp and make it into a paste/soup. Consume two or three mouthfuls and stop.
Wenzhong's formula for syncope.
Sufangmu (Sappan Wood, 3 liang), crushed. Decoct in five sheng of water to obtain two sheng. Divide into two doses. If Sufangmu is unavailable, decoct crimson-colored fabric to extract the juice; this is very effective.
Another formula
Take a handful of green moss growing on the wall. Decoct in four small sheng of water to obtain two sheng. Divide into doses. Additionally, mix Ginger juice (Shengjiangzhi, 1 small sheng), Rehmanniae juice (Dihuangzhi, 1 small sheng), and wine (Jiu, 1 large sheng). Boil for five or six boils. Divide into two doses. Add one spoonful of Dahuang powder (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) to each dose. This formula is excellent.
Cui Shi states that all cases of syncope are caused by deficiency-heat and the surging of blood qi due to an empty abdomen. For those about to deliver, the first step must be to apply strong vinegar to the nose and mouth, keep vinegar nearby for inhalation, and have the patient sip it slowly. This is the superior method. If one feels faint, spray face with vinegar. Upon regaining consciousness, drink vinegar, followed by a little water to dilute it. (Alternatively, give a little water to dilute it.)
Another formula for sudden postpartum fainting, sweating, and loss of consciousness.
This is caused by sudden deficiency.
Swallow a broken chicken egg; consciousness will return. If not awake, administer one sheng of Tongzi Xiaoye (Child's urine); this is very effective. Adult male urine may also be used, but never use the patient's own urine.
If unconsciousness persists for a long time or recurs intermittently, this is due to wind pathogen entering the vessels because of sudden postpartum blood and qi deficiency. This condition is exacerbated by excessive blood loss after delivery. Unlike cases treated with eggs, urgently administer Zhuli (Bamboo sap). Administer five he at a time. If symptoms persist after a short while, administer another five he. Frequent administration of three to five doses leads to immediate recovery. (All extracted from Volume 10, Upper Part)
Jin Xiao formula for fatal blood syncope, loss of consciousness, and restlessness.
Honglanhua (Carthami Flos, 3 liang), fresh is best. Decoct with half sheng of clear wine without ash and half dasheng of child's urine until one da zhan remains. Strain. Wait until slightly cool and take. Alternatively, boil in one large sheng of fresh drawn water for a long time.
Another formula
Obtain juice from red father horse manure (Chifu Ma Fen), one da zhan. Moist material is preferred. If dry, mix with half dasheng of fresh drawn water, grind, strain, and take the juice in one dose. It also effectively stops persistent bleeding. (Recorded by Xiahou Zheng)
