Pathogenesis: After a cold damage disease, the stomach qi is disharmonious. This occurs because when the disease was initially contracted, toxic heat qi was abundant. The patient took many cold medicines to purge, and drank cold water. This forcibly suppressed the disease course. Afterwards, although the heat pathogen receded, cold qi began to move. Consequently, this causes hardness and firmness in the epigastrium (heart below), belching, hiccups, and the smell of putrid food. There is borborygmus (rumbling in the intestines) within the abdomen accompanied by diarrhea. This is due to deficiency-cold of the spleen and stomach. (From Volume 8)
Zhang Zhongjing's *Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases* (*Shanghan Lun*) treats vomiting, hiccups, palpitations in the epigastrium, stuffiness and hardness, and inability to eat with Xiao Banxia Tang (Minor Pinellia Decoction).
Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, one sheng, washed) Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, eight liang, peeled)
Cut the above two ingredients. Boil in seven sheng of water to obtain one and a half sheng. Remove the dregs. Divide into two doses for administration. Avoid mutton and malt sugar.
Another formula for treating vomiting, hiccups, and epigastric stuffiness and hardness, where there is fluid retention between the diaphragm, accompanied by vertigo and palpitations, is Banxia Jia Fuling Tang (Pinellia Decoction plus Poria).
Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, one sheng, washed) Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, eight liang, peeled) Fuling (Poria, three liang)
Cut the above three ingredients. Boil in seven sheng of water to obtain one and a half sheng. Remove the dregs. Take warm, divided into two doses. Avoid mutton, malt sugar, vinegar, and similar substances.
Another formula for treating sensations in the chest that resemble panting but are not true panting, resemble vomiting but are not true vomiting, resemble hiccupping but are not true hiccupping, with a feeling of mental confusion and restlessness, causing a sense of utter helplessness. This is treated with Shengjiang Zhi Banxia Tang (Ginger Juice Pinellia Decoction), which also manages epidemic febrile diseases (Tianxing).
Shengjiangzhi (Ginger Juice, one sheng) Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, half sheng, washed and cut)
Take the above two ingredients. Boil Banxia in three sheng of water to obtain one sheng. Add ginger juice. Boil again to obtain one and a half sheng. Strain through silk cloth. Let it cool slightly. Divide into two doses. Administer over one day and one night until finished. If vomiting and hiccups cease after one dose, stop taking the remaining dose. Avoid mutton and malt sugar. (Same as emergency rescue methods).
Another formula for treating dry heaves and hiccups, especially if the hands and feet are cold, is Xiao Jupi Tang (Minor Citrus Peel Decoction), which also manages epidemic febrile diseases.
Jupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, four liang) Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, eight liang, peeled)
Cut the above two ingredients into narrow strips. Boil in seven sheng of water to obtain three sheng. Remove the dregs. Take one sheng when slightly cool. Healing occurs upon swallowing. (Same as emergency rescue methods; from Volume 16).
*Shenshi Fang* (Deep Master Formulas) treats persistent hiccups after cold damage with Gancao Tang (Licorice Decoction), which also manages epidemic febrile diseases.
Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, three liang, honey-fried) Jupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, three liang)

Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, washed, dried by baking)
Grind the single ingredient into powder. Mix with Shengjiang Tang (Ginger Decoction) and take one qianbi (a small measure). Avoid mutton and malt sugar.
There is also Chisu Tang (Red Perilla Decoction).
Chisu (Perillae Folium Rubrum, one handful)
Boil the single ingredient in three sheng of water to obtain one sheng. Remove the dregs. Drink slowly in small amounts. (Same as *Zhouhou Fang*).
There is also Ganjiang Wan (Dried Ginger Pills).
Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, six fen) Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, four fen, processed)
Pound and sieve the above two ingredients. Use Kujiu (bitter wine/vinegar) to make pills the size of wutong seeds. Take three pills per dose, three times a day. Can be taken with wine or plain water. Avoid pork. (Same as *Zhouhou Fang*).
Another formula for treating hiccups after cold damage is Ganzhuru Tang (Sweet Bamboo Shavings Decoction).

Boil the above two ingredients in eight sheng of water until the rice is cooked and the decoction is ready. Remove the dregs. Divide into doses. Take slowly. It is very effective for hiccups caused by wind-heat qi, and also good for other types of hiccups.
Another formula for treating vomiting and hiccups after cold damage, with chest fullness, deficiency-heat irritability, and restlessness, is Da Jupi Tang (Major Citrus Peel Decoction).
Jupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, one liang) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, one liang, honey-fried) Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, four liang) Renshen (Ginseng Radix, two liang)

Cut the above three ingredients. Boil in six sheng of water to obtain three sheng. Remove the dregs. Take warm, divided into three doses. Take frequently. Finish the decoction and re-boil if necessary, until hiccups stop. Aim for a slight sweat. If there is heat, reduce Guixin by one liang. Avoid raw green onions. (Wen Zhong's formula same; from Volume 6; one version has Gegen two liang).
*Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) treats vomiting and hiccups after cold damage, as well as dry heaves with inability to keep food down, using Sheng Lugenyin (Fresh Reed Root Drink).
