According to *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Symptoms of All Diseases), the manifestations of *Nü Lao Dan* (Jaundice due to Sexual Exhaustion) include: yellowing of both the body and eyes, accompanied by fever and aversion to cold, distension and urgency in the lower abdomen, and difficult urination. This condition is caused by engaging in sexual intercourse during a state of severe fatigue and intense heat, followed immediately by bathing in water. (From Volume 12)
In *Shang Han Lun* (Treatise on Cold Damage Disorders), Zhang Zhongjing states that patients with jaundice typically experience fever at *Ri Bu* (the hour of Shen, approximately 3-5 PM) but paradoxically exhibit aversion to cold; this indicates *Nü Lao Dan*. It arises from tension in the Bladder (*Pang Guang*), fullness in the lower abdomen, generalized yellowing of the body, darkening of the forehead specifically, and heat in the soles of the feet. These factors lead to the formation of *Hei Dan* (Black Jaundice). The stool will inevitably be black. If the abdomen is distended as if filled with water, and the stool is black and loose, this is a case of *Nü Lao Dan*, not edema (*Shui*). Cases with abdominal distension are difficult to treat. The primary formula is *Xiaoshi Fanshi San* (Niter and Alum Powder).
**Ingredients:**
*Xiaoshi* (Sal Nitratis, roasted until yellow) *Fanshi* (Alumen, calcined until juices are exhausted)
Take these two ingredients in equal proportions, crush them, sieve through silk, and mix with barley gruel juice. Administer one *Fang Cun Bi* (a square-inch measure, approx. 3-5g) per dose, three times daily. After taking the medicine, cover the patient with thick clothing to induce sweating. The pathogen will exit via the large and small intestines; the urine will turn normal yellow, and the stool will turn normal black. The barley used must be hulled barley. *Qian Jin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) records: *Xiaoshi* (Sal Nitratis) 2 fen, roasted until dry; *Fanshi* (Alumen) 1 fen, roasted until dry. Therefore, this note is added for clarification. (*Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang*, *Xiao Pin Fang*, Cui Shi, Wen Zhong, *Qian Jin Fang*, *Fan Wang Fang*, and *Shen Shi Fang* all agree with this account. From Volume 14)
*Qian Jin Yi Fang* (Supplement to Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) treats jaundice where fever and aversion to cold occur at *Ri Bu*, accompanied by lower abdominal urgency, body yellowing, black forehead, black stool, loose diarrhea, and heat in the soles of the feet. This is classified as *Nü Lao Dan*; cases with abdominal distension are difficult to treat.
**Ingredients:**
*Huashi* (Talcum, 5 liang, ground) *Shigao* (Gypsum Fibrosum, 5 liang, ground)
Grind these two ingredients into powder. Mix with barley gruel juice and administer one *Fang Cun Bi* per dose, three times daily. Recovery occurs when urination becomes extremely free. (*Xiao Pin Fang*, *Qian Jin Fang*, *Bei Ji Qian Jin Yao Fang*, and Wen Zhong all agree with this account. From Volume 18)
*Jin Xiao Fang* treats *Nü Lao Dan* and jaundice patients who experience fever at *Ri Bu* but paradoxically have aversion to cold; this is *Nü Lao Dan*. It arises from tension in the Bladder, lower abdominal fullness, generalized yellowing, black forehead, heat in the soles, leading to *Hei Dan* (Black Jaundice). The stool is inevitably black, the abdomen is distended as if containing water, and the stool is black and loose. This is *Nü Lao Dan*, not edema. The treatment is the same as for *Hei Dan*. For *Gu Dan* (Grain Jaundice), symptoms include dizziness after eating, palpitations, and mental restlessness; prolonged yellowing results in *Gu Dan*. Both should be treated with *Yin Chen Tang* (Artemisia Capillaris Decoction) mentioned previously. The formula is located in the section on "Generalized Body Yellowing."
*Bi Xiao Fang* treats jaundice due to *Nü Lao* characterized by shortness of breath and a deep voice. The following formula is suitable:
Burn menstrual cloths and blood-stained garments from women into ash. Take one *Fang Cun Bi* with wine on an empty stomach, twice daily. Recovery is guaranteed within three days.
