According to the *Qianjin Fang* (Thousand Gold Formulas), the disease known as "Hong Kong Foot" (a condition characterized primarily by swelling, pain, and weakness of the feet) is said to have originated in the Lingnan region and later spread to the Jiangdong area. The onset is often insidious, without a gradual progression. Patients may initially experience slight pain and numbness, or swelling and fullness in both calves, with weakness and difficulty in flexing and extending the legs when walking. In some cases, the pathogenic factor ascends to the lower abdomen causing local insensitivity; symptoms may include alternating chills and fever, scanty and difficult urination, panting with qi rushing against the throat, severe shortness of breath resembling suffocation, vomiting preventing food intake, and rebellious qi ascending.
For these symptoms, use the Rhinoceros Horn Decoction (also known as Small Rhinoceros Horn Decoction, similar in efficacy to the Emergency Preparedness Decoction).
Ingredients: Rhinoceros Horn (3 liang, crushed into powder), Inula Flower (2 liang), Tangerine Peel (3 liang), Poria (2 liang), Jujube (20 pieces, torn open), Fermented Soybean (1 sheng), Perilla Stem (one handful), Fresh Ginger (3 liang).
Cut the above eight herbs. Boil in 8 sheng of water until reduced to 2.7 sheng. Divide into three doses. Administer each dose at intervals equivalent to the time it takes to walk ten li. Continue administration until the qi descends and urination becomes smooth. If the qi does not descend, switch to the Large Rhinoceros Horn Decoction after finishing this formula. Avoid vinegar-treated foods during treatment.
Another Large Rhinoceros Horn Decoction Formula:
Ingredients: Rhinoceros Horn (2 liang, crushed), Inula Flower (2 liang), Atractylodes Macrocephala (2 liang), Cinnamon Heart (2 liang), Stephania Tetrandra (2 liang), Scutellaria Baicalensis (2 liang), Fresh Ginger (3 liang), Xiang Pi (4 liang, note: original text says "Xiang Pi", likely referring to a specific bark or spice, kept as is), Perilla Stem (one handful).
Cut the above fourteen herbs. Boil in 9 sheng of water until reduced to 2.7 sheng. Divide into three doses, administered at intervals of walking ten li. The goal is to achieve the descent of qi. If qi descends and urination becomes clear... [text missing].
Another Formula:
Ingredients: Licorice Root (2 liang, honey-fried), Rhinoceros Horn (2 liang, crushed), Saposhnikovia Divaricata (2 liang), Cinnamon Heart (3 liang), Apricot Kernel (2 liang), Angelica Pubescens (2 liang), Stephania Tetrandra (2 liang), Gypsum Fibrosum (4 liang), Ligusticum Chuanxiong (2 liang), Ephedra Sinica (3 liang, stems removed), Fresh Ginger (3 liang), Atractylodes Macrocephala (2 liang), Angelica Sinensis (2 liang), Antelope Horn (2 liang, crushed), Scutellaria Baicalensis (1 liang).
Cut the above fifteen herbs. Boil in 2 dou of water. First decoct Ephedra Sinica alone to obtain 8 sheng of liquid, then add the remaining herbs and decoct until 3 sheng remains. Divide into three doses, administered at intervals of walking ten li. After completing the three doses, cover the patient to induce sweating. Take another dose five days later, inducing sweat in the same manner. Avoid eating Seaweed, Chinese Cabbage, Peaches, Plums, Sparrow Meat, and Raw Green Onions.
Another formula for early-stage Hong Kong Foot, starting from the feet and spreading up to the knees and calves, causing swelling and bone pain:
Take leaves of Ricinus Communis (Castor Bean), chop and crush them, steam them, and apply thinly to the affected area. Change the application two to three times daily until the swelling subsides. The seed resembles a beetle, hence the name. If Castor Bean leaves are unavailable in winter, take the root of Fatsia Japonica (or similar plant referred to as Shuo Di), crush it, and mix with wine lees in a ratio of 3 parts lees to 1 part root. Steam until cooked, apply while hot to the swollen area as before, twice daily. This also treats insensitivity and stubborn numbness.
Another formula for when swelling has ascended to the abdomen, causing lower abdominal distension and scanty, difficult urination:
Take one sheng of urine from a black bull (Wu Te Niu). Drink once daily, twice daily, until the swelling subsides. (*Yi Fang* states: For emaciated patients, mix two parts urine with one part cow's milk, boil until a scum forms on the surface, then drink.)
Another urgent decoction for when swelling has subsided but residual symptoms persist:
Ingredients: Ephedra Sinica (2 liang, stems removed), Pinellia Tuber (1 liang, washed), Fresh Ginger (5 liang), Belamcanda Chinensis (2 liang), Angelica Pubescens (3 liang), Rhinoceros Horn (1 liang, crushed), Antelope Horn (1 liang, crushed), Ma (1 liang, note: text unclear, possibly a typo or missing herb name), Evodia Fruit (1 sheng), Poria... [text fragmented].
Cut the above seventeen herbs. Boil in 9 sheng of water until reduced to 4 sheng. Divide into five doses, administered at intervals of walking twenty li. Consume a small amount of rice porridge between doses to support stomach qi. This decoction... [text missing, mentions "heart", "Volume 7"].
Another Large Jinya Wine: Treats poisoning from miasma toxins entering the body, wind-cold-damp bi syndrome, facial paralysis (deviation of mouth and eye), hemiplegia, limb spasms, joint swelling and pain, and severe lower abdominal insensitivity. This condition is named Hong Kong Foot, and this formula treats it comprehensively.
Ingredients: Jin Ya (1 jin), Ce Zi (3 liang, processed), Aconitum Carmichaelii (3 liang, processed), Aconitum Kusnezoffii (3 liang, processed), Ginseng Radix (2 liang), Cistanche Deserticola (3 liang), Poria (2 liang), Angelica Pubescens (half jin), Angelica Sinensis (3 liang), Atractylodes Macrocephala (3 liang), Saposhnikovia Divaricata (3 liang), Astragalus Membranaceus (3 liang, inferred from context "Huang"), Dioscorea Polystachya (3 liang), Asarum Europaeum (3 liang), Cinnamon Heart (3 liang), Ilex Rotunda (2 liang), Pyrola Decorata (3 liang), Ligusticum Chuanxiong (3 liang), Phellodendron Amurense Bark (3 liang), Five-finger Pine Bark (3 liang), Magnetite (10 liang), Salvia Miltiorrhiza (5 liang), Eucommia Ulmoides (3 liang), Dioscorea Hypoglauca Rhizome (3 liang), Achyranthes Bidentata (5 liang), Cibotium Barometz (3 liang), Polygonatum Odoratum (3 liang), Coix Seed (1 sheng), Angelica Dahurica (3 liang), Ophiopogon Japonicus (1 sheng), Dendrobium Officinale (8 liang), Magnolia Officinalis Bark (3 liang, fried), Immature Bitter Orange (3 liang), Platycodon Grandiflorus (3 liang), Rehmannia Glutinosa (2 sheng, cut), Fatsia Japonica Root (4 liang), Scutellaria Baicalensis (3 liang), Polygala Tenuifolia (3 liang, heart removed), Schizonepeta/Tribulus (3 liang, text says "Jing Zi").
Cut the above thirty-nine herbs. Soak in 8 dou of wine for seven days. Warm and drink 1 ge per dose. Take 4-5 times during the day and once at night. Crush mineral drugs into fine powder, place in a separate silk bag, and soak together with the herbs. The medicinal power is mild, and the indications are extensive. For any wind-deficiency affecting the four limbs with slight wind sensations, this wine should be taken; no case is incurable. Those who take it... [text missing, mentions "Volume 7"].
Another Small Jinya Powder: Treats southern miasma epidemic qi, leg weakness, and wind evil/gui zhu (sudden unexplained severe illness or mental disturbance).
Ingredients: Jin Ya (5 fen), Bovine Calculus (1 fen), Aconitum Kusnezoffii (2 fen), Dioscorea Hypoglauca Rhizome (2 fen), Scutellaria Baicalensis (2 fen), Moschus (2 fen), Zanthoxylum Bungeanum (2 fen, note: "han" character present), Paris Polyphylla (2 fen), Realgar (2 fen), Cinnabar (2 fen), Aconitum Carmichaelii (2 fen), Asarum Europaeum (3 fen), Polygonatum Odoratum (3 fen), Cinnamon Heart (2 fen), Ma Cao (2 fen), Rhinoceros Horn (2 fen), Dried Ginger (3 fen), Coptis Chinensis (4 fen), Centipede (one piece, 6 cun long, roasted).
Pulverize the above nineteen herbs and sieve. Mix in Bovine Calculus and Moschus, and pound for three thousand strokes. Take an amount equivalent to five qian-bi with warm wine. Three times daily, twice nightly. Stop when effective. Carry in a red pouch, worn on the left hand for men and right hand for women, size of one cun-bi. Do not avoid visiting the sick or paying respects to elders. Apply to the nose bridge and philtrum when traveling at night. Also apply during morning and evening mist. Avoid pork, cold water, blood-generating raw foods, and raw vegetables. (From Volume 12).
Longevity Formula: Treats Lingnan miasma causing heat, irritability, shortness of breath, chest oppression, and impending suffocation.
Ingredients: Fermented Soybean (1 sheng), Gardenia Jasminoides (14 pieces, torn open), Cimicifuga Racemosa (2 liang).
Cut the above three herbs. Boil in 4 sheng of water until reduced to 1.5 sheng. Divide into three doses. Symptoms will subside immediately.
Another formula for Lingnan miasma causing facial and foot swelling, alternating chills and fever resembling malaria, foot swelling with rebellious qi, chest oppression, cough, flaccid paralysis, and stubborn numbness:
Ingredients: Hemp Seed (1 liang, wrapped in cotton), Cimicifuga Racemosa (1 liang), Belamcanda Chinensis (1 liang), Acorus Tatarinowii (1 liang), Licorice Root (1 liang, fried), Ephedra Sinica (1 liang, stems removed), Rheum Palmatum (1 liang, soaked separately), Fermented Soybean (3 he, wrapped in cotton), Mirabilite (0.5 liang).
Cut the above nine herbs. Boil in 6 sheng of water until reduced to 2 sheng. Strain, then add Mirabilite. Divide into three doses. Aim for mild diarrhea one or two times to detoxify and clear heat. Avoid mutton, maltose, seaweed, and Chinese cabbage. (From Volume 19).
Su Tang Dou Wine: Regular consumption greatly benefits the waist and legs. It is highly recommended for people in Lingnan and those living in damp, low-lying areas. It is also suitable if there is fear of gout-like symptoms appearing.
Ingredients: Fermented Soybean (3 sheng), Fine Fragrant Wine (1 dou).
Take 3 sheng of fermented soybean, steam and sun-dry it three times. Place in 1 dou of wine and soak for three nights. Then it is ready to drink. Consume according to tolerance. The dregs can be applied to the feet, which is beneficial.
Another Formula:
Fresh Soybeans (1 dou, steamed and sun-dried nine times).
Soak in 3 dou of fine wine for three nights. Drink according to preference. Repeat preparation and consumption regularly for excellent results.
Another Formula:
Fermented Soybean (3 sheng), Rhinoceros Horn (8 liang, powdered).
Prepare the soybean as described above. Place in a raw silk bag. Soak in 9 sheng of high-quality wine for about five days. Sprinkle the Rhinoceros Horn powder outside the bag. Stir frequently before each dose to allow the horn flavor to infuse into the wine. Drink 3 ge per dose, adjusting quantity based on constitution. Take three times daily. Do not prepare this wine in summer as it may spoil. Use this method. Wine selection is flexible.
