Cui's Formula for Treating Cold Damage in the First One or Two Days.
Moxibustion can be immediately applied to the vertex (Baihui, GV20) with three moxa cones, and then to Dazhui (GV14) with three moxa cones; increasing each to five cones is beneficial. This method has been verified as effective. Dazhui (GV14) is the prominent vertebra level with the shoulders and sloping upward. Care must be taken not to invade the neck; if the location is incorrect, it is wrong. It connects above to the cervical bones and aligns below with the shoulders, situated on the vertebral segments. All other acupoints are located below the segments. In moxibustion and acupuncture, a deviation of a hair's breadth leads to a significant error. Since Cui does not specify exact vertical levels, this explanation is provided. (Excerpted from *Huangdi Zhenjiu Jing*)
Another formula for treating cold damage from one to three days, employing sweating therapy: Du Zhang San (Miasma-Dispersing Powder).
Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) - 10 fen, nodes removed; Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng, 桔梗); Zanthoxyli Fructus (Shujiao, 蜀椒) - perspired; Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin, 细辛); Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, 白术); Evodiae Fructus (Wuzhuyu, 吴茱萸); Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 防风) - each 4 fen; Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata (Wutou, 乌头) - processed; Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang, 干姜); Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guixin, 桂心) - each 5 fen.
The above ten ingredients are pounded and sifted into a powder. Take one cun-bi (a measure of volume) with warm wine. Cover warmly to induce sweating. If sweating occurs after several doses, stop administration. For mild cases occurring within one or two days, sweating will resolve the condition. For severe cases, resolution is difficult. However, placing approximately two soybean-sized amounts of the powder into the nostrils may induce dryness and rhinorrhea; applying this three to four times daily will surely cure the disease. It also wards off epidemic pathogens. Avoid pork, raw green onions, raw vegetables, peaches, plums, and sparrow meat.
Another formula for treating cold damage characterized by dark complexion, aversion to cold, fever, body pain, requiring sweating: Shendan Wan (Divine Elixir Pill).
Panax Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen, 人参) - 5 fen; Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata (Wutou, 乌头) - 4 fen, processed; Pinelliae Tuber (Banxia, 半夏) - washed, 5 fen; Poria (Fuling, 茯苓) - 5 fen; Cinnabaris (Zhusha, 朱砂) - 1 fen, ground; Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata (Fuzi, 附子) - 4 fen, processed.
The above six ingredients are pounded into powder and mixed with honey to form pills the size of soybeans. Take three pills per dose with ginger decoction to induce sweating, keeping the body slightly moist. If sweating does not occur, administer hot rice gruel to promote sweating. If sweating is insufficient and the disease persists, repeat the previous method. If sufficient sweating occurs but the disease persists, administer Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction). This medicine is toxic; drinking water helps alleviate its heat and side effects. Zhou Hu Jun's son, Zhou Qi, reported that this formula is very effective for epidemic diseases, so it is recorded here. Avoid pork, mutton, vinegar, and raw blood products.
For cold damage where Du Zhang San fails to induce sweating, prepare Cong Chi Tang (Scallion and Fermented Soybean Decoction).
Allii Fistulosi Bulbus (Congbai, 葱白) - 14 stems; Glycines Soja Semen Praeparatum (Chidouchi, 淡豆豉) - 1 sheng, wrapped in silk.
Boil the above two ingredients in 3 sheng of water until 1 sheng remains. Take once. Cover warmly to induce sweating. This is superior to Du Zhang San. (Repeats content from *Zhouhou Beiji Fang*)
For cold damage where Cong Chi Tang fails to induce sweating, take Gegen Tang (Kudzu Decoction).
Allii Fistulosi Bulbus (Congbai, 葱白) - 14 stems; Glycines Soja Semen Praeparatum (Chidouchi, 淡豆豉) - 1 sheng, wrapped in silk; Puerariae Lobatae Radix (Gegen, 葛根) - 3 liang, sliced.
Boil the above three ingredients in 5 sheng of water until 2 sheng remain. Divide into two doses. Cover warmly to induce sweating. If no sweat, take again. I have used this frequently; usually, one dose induces sweating, rarely requiring a second dose. It was highly effective in saving dozens of people.
For cold damage, Zhou Hu, an official in the former army headquarters, took Gegen Tang twice without sweating. Upon re-examination, he exhibited severe aversion to cold and stiffness. I reconsidered and formulated Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction) to resolve the exterior.
Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) - 2 liang, nodes removed; Puerariae Lobatae Radix (Gegen, 葛根) - 3 liang; Allii Fistulosi Bulbus (Congbai, 葱白) - 14 stems; Glycines Soja Semen Praeparatum (Chidouchi, 淡豆豉) - 1 sheng, wrapped in silk.
Sliced the above four ingredients, boiled in 7 sheng of water until 2.5 sheng remain. Divide into three doses. Zhou Hu took it again, sweated profusely, and recovered. Patients with similar symptoms to Zhou Hu all sweated and recovered after taking this; over ten patients were cured.
Regarding cold damage, Ruan Henan's steaming method.
Burn firewood to heat the ground for a long time, sweep away the ashes, and sprinkle lightly with water. Use mulberry silkworm feces (Can Sha, 蚕砂), or peach leaves, mulberry leaves, cypress leaves, various grain chaff, and wheat bran. Cow or horse manure can also be used, though odorous. Collect peach leaves just before they fall and dry them. Place these materials on the heated ground to a thickness of 2-3 cun. Lie on a mat placed over them, cover warmly, and use this method to induce sweating. Sweat will emerge. If too hot, adjust carefully; for excessive heat, use double mats. Stop when sweating covers the whole body.
For cold damage lasting three to five days, suspecting jaundice, use this oil formula.
Take one zhan of fresh sesame oil, half a zhan of water, and mix with one egg white. Stir thoroughly until combined. Take all at once.
Xiao Qianhu Tang (Minor Peucedanum Decoction) for cold damage unresolved after six or seven days, with alternating chills and fever, fullness and distress in the chest and hypochondrium, silence, lack of appetite, irritability, frequent vomiting, and abdominal pain due to cold colic. (Hu Zhiyun states this originates from Zhang Zhongjing.)
Peucedani Radix (Qianhu, 前胡) - 8 liang; Pinelliae Tuber (Banxia, 半夏) - half sheng, washed; Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, 生姜) - 5 liang; Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩); Panax Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen, 人参); Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) - roasted, each 3 liang; Jujubae Fructus (Dazao, 大枣) - 11 pieces, split.
Slice the above seven ingredients, boil in 1 dou of water until 3 sheng remain. Divide into four doses. Avoid mutton, maltose, kelp, and Chinese cabbage. (*Gujin Luyan* agrees. Zhang Zhongjing uses Chaihu instead of Qianhu. Analyzing this formula for cold colic, the properties might be too cool. Combining with Zhang Zhongjing's Chaihu Guijiang Tang... Cui's usage is uncertain.)
For cold damage presenting with constipation from onset to seven or eight days, or four to five days later, or constipation following purgation: Chengqi Tang (Order the Qi Decoction).
Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Houpo, 厚朴) - roasted; Rheae Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang, 大黄) - each 3 liang; Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhishi, 枳实) - 6 slices, roasted.
Slice the above three ingredients, boil in 5 sheng of water until 2 sheng remain. Robust patients take 1 sheng; frail patients take 7 ge. Stop when bowel movement occurs. (Fan Wang agrees.)
If there is dry stool in the stomach causing delirious speech, or excess heat causing delirium: for constipation with delirium, take Chengqi Tang; for open bowels with delirium, take the Four-Ingredient Coptis Heat-Removing Decoction. Old Chengqi Tang formulas use Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas), but I removed it due to toxicity concerns. After years of use, it is safe and effective. When taking the decoction, also apply external Ginger Suishui (Ginger Juice Enema) to ensure expulsion of dry stool. If both internal decoction and external enema fail to produce bowel movement, add 1 liang of Mangxiao to the original formula.
Method for Ginger Suishui (Ginger Juice Enema):
Shape fresh ginger like a small finger, 2 cun long, coat with salt, and insert into the lower anus. Immediate relief follows.
Another method:
Use pig bile enema. Immediate relief follows. (Zhang Zhongjing's *Shanghan Lun* states: Mix pig bile with a little vinegar and instill into the rectum.)
Liu Che, a military supervisor, contracted an epidemic disease. After three days, sweating resolved the initial stage, but relapse occurred due to alcohol consumption. He suffered from severe restlessness, dry retching, dry mouth, groaning, delirium, and inability to lie down. I formulated Huanglian Jiedu Tang (Coptis Decoction to Resolve Toxicity).
Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 黄连) - 3 liang; Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩); Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai, 黄柏) - each 2 liang; Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi, 栀子) - 14 pieces, split.
Slice the above four ingredients, boil in 6 sheng of water until 2 sheng remain. Divide into two doses. Vision clears after the first dose; consume rice gruel after the second dose. Gradual recovery ensues. I use this for high fever, restlessness, vomiting, groaning, delirium, and insomnia. It is excellent. Tell others it is effective. This formula directly resolves heat toxicity and extreme heat. It is highly effective within five days. Avoid pork and cold water.
Da Qianhu Tang (Greater Peucedanum Decoction) for cold damage unresolved after eight or nine days, with hard and full epigastrium/abdomen, body pain, internal and external heat, restlessness, and vomiting. (Hu Qia states this originates from Zhang Zhongjing.)
Peucedani Radix (Qianhu, 前胡) - half jin; Pinelliae Tuber (Banxia, 半夏) - half sheng, washed; Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, 生姜) - 5 liang; Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhishi, 枳实) - 8 slices, roasted; Paeoniae Radix Alba (Shaoyao, 芍药) - 4 liang; Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩) - 3 liang; Jujubae Fructus (Dazao, 大枣) - 12 pieces, split.
Slice the above seven ingredients, boil in 1 dou of water until 3 sheng remain. Divide into four doses. Take three times during the day and once at night. Avoid mutton and maltose. (*Gujin Luyan* agrees. Zhang Zhongjing uses Chaihu instead of Qianhu. Originally stated to add 2 liang of Dahuang; without Dahuang, it is not named Da Chaihu Tang.)
For Shaoyin disease with much cold, no surface heat, only distress and restlessness, silence, extreme aversion to light, occasional abdominal pain, deep and fine pulse, and no thirst, which does not resolve after several days: The old formula Si Shun Tang is too hot, so I rarely use it. If Shaoyin disease involves diarrhea with residual body heat, take Huanglong Guke Tang (Coptis and Dragon Bone Decoction). If diarrhea persists for over ten days with cold extremities penetrating to the hands and feet, and no signs of heat, take Zengsun Si Shun Tang (Modified Si Shun Decoction). (Huanglong Guke Tang is seen in Volume 3.)
Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) - 2 liang, roasted; Panax Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen, 人参) - 2 liang; Os Draconis (Longgu, 龙骨) - 2 liang; Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 黄连); Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang, 干姜) - each 2 liang; Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata (Fuzi, 附子) - one medium piece, processed, black skin removed.
Slice the above six ingredients, boil in 6 sheng of water until 2 sheng remain. Divide into two doses. Repeat if ineffective; it is very good. Add Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Radix) 2 liang for abdominal pain after diarrhea; add Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) 1 liang for vomiting. Avoid kelp, Chinese cabbage, pork, and cold water.
For Shaoyin disease with persistent diarrhea after twenty days, take Zhili Wan (Zhili Pills), a formula from Hao Jing.
