Yuan Shilang Xisheng collected nine prescriptions from Zhang Wenzhong. In response to an imperial edict regarding the wind-related ailments suffered by Zhang Wenzhong and others, where physicians' prescriptions varied greatly, it was ordered that these be revised together with renowned physicians into a single volume for submission. Wang Fangqing, the Director of the Palace Service Department (Dianzhong Jian), was appointed to specifically oversee the affairs concerning Minister Zhang Wenzhong. Following the edict, I convened various renowned physicians to compile the prescriptions into one scroll. There are one hundred and twenty types of Wind diseases and eighty types of Qi diseases. Generally, Wind diseases share common characteristics, but individual constitutions vary. Some present as Cold or Heat patterns; ignorant physicians fail to understand the properties and actions of herbs, sometimes using Summer herbs in Winter or Autumn herbs in Winter, leading to many deaths. Only Hongjiao (Gouty arthritis/foot swelling), Toufeng (Head Wind), Dafeng (Leprosy/Morbid Wind), and Shangqi (Rebellious Qi/Asthma) require continuous medication year-round. For other ailments, medication is taken according to the onset of symptoms. Mild cases use small formulas, while severe cases use large formulas. Although the ingredients may be the same, their therapeutic effects differ significantly. The following are respectfully presented:
Sangzhi Decoction, treating hemiplegia and all types of Wind diseases.
Sangzhi (Cacumen Mori, sliced, one da sheng [approx. 200ml], not using brand new tender branches).
Take this single ingredient, add one da dou [approx. 10 liters] of water, and decoct until two da sheng remain. In summer, submerge in a well to cool, lest it turn sour and spoil. Take one zhan [approx. 50-60ml] daily on an empty stomach until finished. It can also be taken as a decoction. If taken prophylactically against Wind, consuming one da sheng ensures lifelong immunity from hemiplegia. No contraindications.
Another Yinzi Formula for treating Wind diseases.
Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, 3 liang) Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex, 0.5 liang) Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 1 liang) Shushengma (Bupleuri Radix var. chinense) Fushen (Poria Cum Radix Pini) Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, sliced with skin) Shengxijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu, fresh, sliced/shredded, 2 liang each).
Chop the above eight ingredients. Add one da sheng of water, boil until two da he [approx. 40ml] remain. Divide into three warm doses. If heat signs are present, add Zhuli (Bambusae Caulis in Taeniae汁, 1 zhan). No contraindications. Avoid raw green onions and vinegar.
Another prescription, said by Zhang Wenzhong: A divine pill formula suitable for all four seasons, Nineteen-Ingredient Pill.
Fangfeng Qianghuo Wujia Pi (Acanthopanacis Cortex) Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix) Renshen Danshen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) Yiyiren (Coicis Semen) Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix) Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix, heart removed) Gadihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) Qingxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, i.e., Niuxi, 8 fen) Fushen (8 fen) Guixin (8 fen).
Pulverize the above nineteen ingredients and sift. Mix with honey to form pills the size of mulberry seeds. Take fifteen pills with wine, twice daily. Gradually increase to thirty pills as the limit. Avoid pork, fish, garlic, raw green onions, vinegar, and Yuan Yi (Coriandri Fructus).
Another formula treating all Wind diseases and hemiplegia manifesting in the four limbs, with facial deviation (Koumu Li) and slurred speech (Yanyu Jiansè). This Tang (decoction) does not damage healthy Qi and surpasses Xuming Tang. Therefore, it is recorded for transmission. It is particularly suitable for the elderly.
Shengdihuang (Juzhi, juice) Zhuli (Bambusae Caulis in Taeniae Juice) Jingli (Schizonepetae Herba Juice) — take 1.5 sheng of each of the above three juices. Qianghuo Fangfeng (each 2 liang) Shufuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata, one large piece, used raw, peeled, broken into 8-9 pieces, weighing 1 liang possesses divine efficacy).
Chop the above six ingredients. Place them in the three juices mentioned above. Simmer over moderate heat until 1.5 sheng remains. Strain. Take warm, divided into two doses. The interval between doses should correspond to walking 8-10 li. For severe Wind, frequent administration of 5-6 doses yields undeniable results. Particularly suitable for the elderly and children. Administer regardless of season. No contraindications. Taking one dose every three days is even better. Avoid pork and Yuan Yi.
Another Zhusan (boiled powder) formula.
Fushen (6 liang) Fangfeng Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, roasted) Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix) Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix) Xuanshen Shaoyao Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) Baixianpi (Dictamni Cortex) Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) Maimendong (1 liang, heart removed) Lingyangjiao (Saigae Tataricae Cornu, 2 pieces, shredded) Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 1 jin, crushed and wrapped in cotton) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 3 liang, roasted) Cishi (Magnetitum, 24 liang, wrapped in cotton).
Chop the above twenty-one ingredients like hemp seeds. Divide into twenty-four packets. Take one packet daily. Add fourteen apricot kernels (Xingren), remove tips and skins, use only those with two kernels, and crush. Add three sheng of water, boil until one sheng remains. Strain. Take on an empty stomach in one dose. During spring and early summer, avoid cold and raw foods during treatment. Avoid vinegar, raw green onions, Haizao (Sargassum), and raw vegetables.
Another formula treating all Wind diseases, even those persisting for ten or twenty years without cure.
Niubanggen (Arctii Radix, finely sliced, 1 sheng) Shengdihuang (finely sliced) Niuxi (finely sliced) Gouqizi (Lycii Fructus, slightly crushed, 3 sheng each).
Soak the above four ingredients in three sheng of unadulterated wine (Wuhui Jiu). Contain in a fine silk bag. Soak for seven days in spring and summer, fourteen days in autumn and winter. Each dose must be taken on an empty stomach. The patient should feel a slight warmth/alcohol flush.
Another Hanshuishi (Cold Water Stone) Zhusan formula.
Hanshuishi (Calcitum) Shigao Gueshi (Talcum) Baishizhi (Halloysitum Rubrum) Longgu (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi et Femoris) — each 8 liang. Guixin Gancao (roasted) Muli (Ostreae Concha, each 3 liang, calcined) Chishizhi (Halloysitum Rubrum) Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) Dahuang — each 4 liang. Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu, 1 liang, shredded).
Pulverize the above twelve ingredients and sift through a horse-hair sieve. Store in a leather pouch, tightly tied at the mouth, and hang in a high, cool place. To administer, boil one sheng of water for five or six boils. Add one fangcun bi [approx. 2-3 grams] of the powder. Boil for seven or eight more boils. Turn off heat, let settle, decant, and take in one dose. Can be taken daily. No contraindications. Suitable for children as well.
Another Wulisan Songjiu (Five-Pine Nut Wine) formula. (To be taken after October in winter).
Wulisan Songye (Pinus Armandii Folium, 7 jin, including large leaves) Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, 7 liang, nodes removed) Fangfeng Huangqi (Astragali Radix) Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix) Qinjiao — each 2 liang. Niuxi (4 liang) Shengdihuang (1 jin) Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 2 liang).
Chop the above nine ingredients. Soak in four da dou of clear, unadulterated wine. Soak for seven days in spring, twenty days in winter, five days in summer. Take two or three times daily. Each dose ranges from one da he to four he. Follow standard herbal contraindications.
Another method for brewing medicinal wine.
Nuomi (Glutinosis Oryzae Sativae Granum, 1 sheng) Qu (Medicated Leaven, 1.5 sheng) Fangfeng (0.5 jin, sliced) Cang'erzi (Xanthii Fructus, 3 sheng).
Boil the above four ingredients in eight sheng of water until six sheng remain. Mix rice and Qu simultaneously in a porcelain vessel. Keep in a warm place for one week until ripe. If re-brewing is desired, once cooled sufficiently, add Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus, 1 sheng). (All extracted from the previous volume).
