The etiology of accumulation (Ji Ju) and stubborn knotting involves the qi of the five zang organs and six fu organs having already accumulated internally. This is exacerbated by irregular diet and improper regulation of cold and warmth, causing pathogenic factors to overlap and firmly knot together. Over time, this forms a fixed mass (Zheng). (From Volume 19)
Prescription from *Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang* for treating a mass in the heart region as large as a cup, preventing food intake:
Tingli (Descurainiae Semen Lepidii Semen, 2 liang) Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 2 liang) Zeku (Phytolaccae Radix, 4 liang, washed)
Crush and sieve the above three herbs. Mix with honey and pound for one thousand strokes. Take pills the size of wutong seeds, two pills at a time, three times daily. If ineffective, slightly increase the dosage. (*Qianjin Fang*, Wen Zhong Ji Yan Fang, and Gu Jin Lu Yan Fang record similarly, stating it treats Zheng Jian where the area below the heart is as large as a cup, causing abdominal fullness after eating and severe pain in the heart and abdomen.)
Another method for moxibustion compression (Yun) treatment for Zheng:
Zaozhong Huangtu (Loess from Hearth, 1 sheng) Sheng Hu (Raw Allium Sativum, 1 sheng)
Pound the above two ingredients first. Cook the garlic until soft, mix with the loess, and pound again. Pour good vinegar over it to moisten. Apply the medicated cloth to one side and place it on the lesion. When dry, re-apply the mixture and replace the cloth. Continue until the condition resolves. (From Volume 1)
Cui Shi's prescription for treating Zheng Xi and Shan Xi:
Have the patient sit flat. Take a hemp thread and wrap it around the neck, letting it hang forward. Mark where the end reaches the Jiwei point (CV15), then cut horizontally. Fold the thread back along the spine to its end and mark it. Take another thread to measure the width across the mouth corners, cutting off the excess outside the corners. Fold this mouth-measuring thread in half and align the fold with the spinal mark. Divide it up and down, marking both ends. These three points correspond to areas for moxibustion. Moxa each site seven to ten cones (zhuang) per day, stopping after ten days. Observe if the patient's appetite and taste sensation improve. If so, re-measure the mouth width, divide horizontally at the mid-spine mark, and moxa accordingly. The number of cones remains the same. Also observe the spinal segment acupoints, which should be one or two fen away from the thread; moxa directly on these segment acupoints if close. If far, do not restrict to segment acupoints. If the patient has not recovered, pause for twenty days and resume the previous method. Additionally, moxa the head of the costal margin (Ji Li Tou) for two hundred cones.
Another method for moxa treatment of Shan Xi:
This type of mass has a root. The root may attach to the back or the arm. Have the patient sit flat. Carefully examine the head of the mass. Use your hand to search upward from the head of the mass; there should be a palpable pulsation (zhuzhu ran). Search finely upward to the arm until reaching the most prominent pulsation point. Apply moxa at this point on the arm. The number of cones is the same as previously described. Wang Cheng stated: On the back, moxa should not be excessive; only about seven cones per day are suitable.
Another moxa method for masses affecting both left and right sides:
The first flexed rib head near the second rib below is the moxa site. The second rib head near the third rib below is also a moxa site. Moxa fifty cones on each side simultaneously. (Qianjin Fang records: Moxa the left side for left lesions, the right side for right lesions. Count the flexed ribs on the spine. At the upper part of the second rib and lower part of the third rib, towards the flesh, moxa three times on the first day, five times on the second day, repeating until fifty cones. Avoid garlic; no other dietary restrictions.)
Another moxa method for Pi Qi:
Count from below the breast to the third rib below. It corresponds vertically with the breast. Locate the acupoint slightly closer to the flesh, connecting to the outer edge of the lumbar vertebrae. Moxa both sides. Initially, apply three cones to each side. On the next day, four cones. Increase by one cone daily until reaching seven cones. Then restart from three cones and continue for thirty days before stopping.
For the aforementioned two moxa methods, if the point was marked with fists clenched, keep the fists clenched during moxa. If marked with legs extended, keep the legs extended during moxa. (From Volume 7)
